Halyna was shot to death after actor Alec Baldwin accidentally fired a prop gun while on the set of Baldwin's new film, Rust. The sheriff's office said Baldwin fired the prop gun and hit the film's director, Joel Souza, and Halyna, director of photography. Halyna, 42, was flown by helicopter to the University of New Mexico hospital, the state's only Level 1 trauma center, in critical condition where she later died. Souza, 48, was treated and released from a different hospital.
