California Math Teacher Suspended After Performing 'Sohcahtoa' Dance For Class

"Sohcahtoa" is a helpful mnemonic for remembering the definitions of the trigonometric functions, but a Riverside, California high school teacher used it as she mimicked an indigenous dance.

A student recorded the teacher and posted a video of her dance online.

The video quickly went viral on Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms this week, sparking outrage from members of the Native American community, many of whom found the dance offensive and deeply inappropriate. The teacher was then suspended.

Teacher Suspended

As The Los Angeles Times reported, the Riverside Unified School District suspended the teacher on Thursday and said that her actions "do not represent the values of our district."

"These behaviors are completely unacceptable and an offensive depiction of the vast and expansive Native American cultures and practices," the district said, without releasing the teacher's name.

President of the Riverside City Teachers Association Laura Boling echoed this sentiment, saying she was "disappointed" with the teacher in question.

"We care deeply about all our students and do not condone actions that alienate, hurt and threaten Indigenous students' learning environment," Boling said.

Native American Community

The video -- which can be viewed below -- upset members of the Native American community.

Director of the American Indian Movement's Southern California chapter Dee Dee Manzanares Ybarra said that "people are upset, people are a little angry with what happened because it's just so disrespectful to our youth."

Indigenous rights activist Ivette Xochiyotl and other community members, meanwhile, organized a protest in response to the video.

"Whose land? Our land!" the protesters chanted.

Some students stayed after school to join the demonstration.

Democratic Assembly Reacts

Democratic Assembly members Sabrina Cervantes and Jose Medina -- Medina is the first California Native American to be elected to the state Assembly -- also weighed in on the controversy.

"It is damaging and disheartening to see Native American and Indigenous culture represented in such a trite and insensitive way. We need to ensure that students learn about themselves in positive, accurate and appropriate ways," they said in a joint statement.

Together with Ybarra, Medina tried to deliver a letter to the school's principal, but was not allowed to do so -- the letter demanded the teacher's resignation.

Native Student Speaks Out

The student who posted the video clip of the teacher online, Akalei Brown -- who is a a Native American of Kanaka-Maoli and Taos Pueblo descent -- said she found the teacher's behavior deeply offensive.

"I felt it necessary to share this video with the world so they could have a small glimpse into the type of abuses Native children face in U.S. schools every day. This is reality for Native people in the U.S. and we're not going to take it sitting down anymore," she said.

Salt Lake City: Police IT Worker Arrested For Passing Sensitive Info To Sex Trafficker

Patrick Kevin Driscoll, an IT worker for the Salt Lake City Police Department, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly passing sensitive information to an accused sex trafficker.

According to the affidavit, Driscoll -- who is 50 years old and goes by the moniker Guardian -- was charged with computer crimes, exploiting prostitution, aiding prostitution, obstructing justice, and theft.

Driscoll is allegedly an associate of a man named Michael Ricks. In March, Ricks was charged with multiple felonies, including exploitation of prostitution and human trafficking.

Here's what happened.

Patrick Kevin Driscoll Arrested

As reported by The New York Post, a sex worker told law enforcement that someone within their ranks is providing Ricks with highly sensitive information.

The sex worker also said she "was fearful for her safety" and was forced to perform "sexual acts" with Driscoll, in exchange for this information. This, she told police, was arranged by Ricks.

Driscoll provided identities of undercover police officers (especially those investigating sex trafficking), phone numbers, and similar confidential information to Ricks, she told law enforcement.

Affidavit

The affidavit said that "multiple conversations have been found … between Ricks, V2, and V3 discussing The Guardian," meaning Driscoll.

"In one conversation, V3 contacted another victim of Ricks and notified her to cancel her date and leave the hotel because The Guardian had just informed them that it was an undercover police operation," the document continued.

"In another conversation V3 was informed of a police narcotics operation in a building next to her," it said.

Driscoll admitted to passing information to Ricks, but said the information was actually false.

Home Search

A search of Driscoll's home revealed that he stored on electronic devices "the names of undercover officers, metro gang files, and other law enforcement restricted documents that could only be accessed through the use of multiple restricted databases or files," according to documents.

Officials argued against releasing Driscoll as he awaits trial, claiming that he "not only has the knowledge but the means to shut down all city IT services should he desire."

"At this junction city officials are unsure as to the extent or depth of the files that have been accessed," they said.

Details Revealed

As per Deseret News, Driscoll allegedly passed information to Ricks in order to help him hide his illegal activities from law enforcement.

Police believe Driscoll and Ricks communicated through an app called Signal, which sends encrypted messages that auto-delete after thirty seconds.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, meanwhile, said in a statement that she is "deeply troubled by the circumstances and information surrounding the arrest of a Salt Lake City Corp. IMS employee."

"Salt Lake City Corp. is in full cooperation with the Utah Attorney General's Office," she noted.

Brandon Lee's Family Speaks Out About Alec Baldwin's Accidental Set Shooting

The family of the late Brandon Lee, the actor who died on set from a gun misfire, spoke out about the tragedy that happened on the set of Alec Baldwin's film.

On Thursday, Santa Fe police department announced that an accident occurred on the set of western film Rust, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, and also injuring director Joel Souza, 48, who was recently released from the hospital.

Unfortunately, this is not the first on-set gun misfire that resulted in a fatality. A similar incident happened to Brandon Lee in 1993.

Who Is Brandon Lee?

Brandon Lee was the son of the legendary Bruce Lee. Brandon died on set while filming The Crow in 1993. He was shot by a gun with a real bullet, fired by his co-star.

The prop gun was loaded with improperly made .44-caliber dummy rounds but one got stuck in the barrel and was discharged by a blank cartridge.

The accident is one of the most infamous Hollywood on-set tragedies. While the investigation found the crew to be negligent, no charges were filed against the production company. Brandon was only 28 years old when he died.

Brandon Lee's Family Reacts To Tragedy

"Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and to Joel Souza and all involved in the incident on Rust. No one should ever be killed by a gun on a film set. Period💔" Shannon Lee, Brandon's sister, tweeted out.

Baldwin's shooting accident had a lot of fans remembering the similar tragedy that took the life of action star Lee and also questioning the safety precautions taken during film shootings.

Filming Of 'Rust" Has Been Shut Down

Following the accident, Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital but she later died from the injury.

The production company released a statement saying that filming has been shut down:

"We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department's investigation. We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event."

Alec Baldwin Offers Support To Hutchins' Family

Meanwhile, Baldwin also spoke out on Twitter, saying he deeply admired colleague Halyna Hatchins and he is in shock, processing the tragedy.

He also said he is fully cooperating in the police investigation to find out how the accident happened.

Baldwin also shared that he is currently in touch with Hutchins' husband and is offering their family all his support.

Old Tweet Comes Back To Haunt Alec Baldwin After He Accidentally Shoots Woman To Death

Actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the set of Rust Thursday, striking the film's director Joel Souza and director of photography Halyna Hutchins.

Hutchins was immediately transported via helicopter to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately she later succumbed to her injuries. Souza received emergency care and was then released from the hospital.

As Hutchins' colleagues released statements and paid tributes, Alec Baldwin said his heart was "broken" over the tragedy. But many Twitter users pointed to an old tweet of Baldwin's calling him a hypocrite.

Haunting Tweet

As The New York Post reported, many Twitter users pointed to a 2017 tweet from Baldwin, in which he wondered what it felt like to wrongfully kill a person.

"I wonder how it must feel to wrongfully kill someone," Baldwin wrote in September that year, referring to the shooting of Dillan Tabares.

Huntington Beach police officer Eric Esparza shot Tabares after Tabares punched him and reached for his gun. The Orange County District Attorney's Office later ruled that the shooting was justified.

Baldwin's words are now coming back to haunt him.

Twitter Piles On

"Maybe you can answer that question now?" one person asked, sharing images of Baldwin's old tweet next to headlines about Hutchins's death.

Another person added that this was a perfect example of "when the self-righteous demonstrate hypocrisy."

"I hope you learn to be a better person to others who make mistakes in their lives," another Twitter user wrote, while somebody else added "what u put into this Universe will always be what u receive in this Universe."

But others thought this was highly inappropriate. "Too soon people. Too soon," someone tweeted.

Baldwin At Loss For Words

"There are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours," Baldwin wrote on Twitter, adding that he is "fully cooperating with the police investigation to address how this tragedy occurred."

"I am in touch with her husband, offering my support to him and his family. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna," the actor added in a follow-up Twitter post.

Hollywood Pays Tribute To Hutchins

As reported by ABC News, fellow cinematographer Elle Schneider paid tribute to Hutchins calling her a "rockstar."

"Women cinematographers have historically been kept from genre film, and it seems especially cruel that one of the rising stars who was able to break through had her life cut short on the kind of project we've been fighting for," Schneider said.

Actor Joe Manganiello, meanwhile, described Hutchins as "an absolutely incredible talent and a great person."

"I am so sad today for everyone who knew her and worked with her," Manganiello said.

According to People's report, Ruelas proposed to Giudice on Tuesday at the Amanzoe Resort in Porto Heli, Greece. And, as he got down on one knee, roses, sparklers, candles, and a violinist were seen nearby.

There was also an over-the-top fireworks display.

"It was absolutely exquisite," a source told the outlet of the proposal. "The choreographed fireworks display illuminated a 'Marry Me' sign as Louie got down on one knee. Teresa was completely surprised."

Brian Laundrie Was 'Very Upset' Before Leaving Home, Family Lawyer Says

Brian Laundrie and his girlfriend Gabby Petito went on a cross country trip this summer, but only Laundrie returned home -- in Petito's Ford Transit van.

Laundrie then vanished, but Petito's body was found near Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park in September. She died of strangulation.

The tragic and disturbing case reached its conclusion this week.

On Wednesday, human remains and items belonging to Laundrie were found at the Carlton reserve in Sarasota County, Florida. And on Thursday, it was confirmed that the remains were indeed Laundrie's.

Here's the latest update.

Laundrie Family Lawyer

Laundrie family lawyer Steven Bertolino said in a new interview that Brian's parents, Chris and Roberta Laundrie, are devastated and regret letting their son leave home, per The New York Post.

"I can tell you Brian was very upset when he left. Chris conveyed to me several times he wished he wouldn't have let him go, but he couldn't stop him," Bertolino began

"But Brian is a grown man. He was 22 years old. He wanted to walk out the door, he was entitled to walk out the door," he said, though Brian was actually 23.

Parents Are 'Suffering'

Bertolino said that both Laundrie and Petitio's parents are "suffering," and described the whole case as tragic.

"There are two young people that have now lost their lives," the lawyer said, asking the public for understanding.

"These are parents that are suffering. Now, I understand that whatever happened or whatever didn't happen … This is tragic for two families. And anybody with a child, and anybody with a sense of humanity can understand the frustration that both families feel on that point," he added.

Chris And Roberta Laundrie

As law enforcement agencies, body hunters, and volunteers were searching for Laundrie, many urged the authorities to interrogate Chris and Roberta.

Even former United States Marshal Lenny DePaul said earlier this month that Laundrie's parents could be key to solving the mysterious case, and suggested that they knew where Brian was hiding and possibly had something to do with his disappearance.

Ultimately, Chris and Roberta joined the search for their son and ended up finding his possessions and remains at the Carlton reserve.

Gabby Petito's Family

Members of Gabby Petito's family have refused to comment on Laundrie's remains being found, and are still grieving her tragic death, according to family attorney Rick Stafford.

"Gabby's family is not doing interviews or making a statement at this time. They are grieving the loss of their beautiful daughter. Gabby's family will make a statement at the appropriate time and when they are emotionally ready," Stafford said in a statement supplied to WWSB.

Petito was 22 years old when she was strangled to death.

Blake Lively Slams Paparazzi Photo Of Her Children: 'This Is So Disgusting'

Blake Lively is once again calling out paparazzi after an unauthorized photo of her children was shared online. The 34-year-old Gossip Girl alum, who shares daughters James, 6, Inez, 5, and Betty, 2, with 44-year-old Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, slammed the Instagram account @hollywoodstarkids on Wednesday, October 20, for posting a picture of the family without her and her husband's consent.

"This is so disturbing," Lively, who is followed by 30.3 million on Instagram, wrote in the comments section of the post, which has since been taken down.

Protective Mother

Lively minced no words as she spoke out against paparazzi taking and distributing photos of her underaged children. In a lengthy message expressing her discontent, she blasted the Instagram account for what it seems was a repeated transgression, asking that the photo be removed.

"I've personally shared with you that these men stalk and harass my children. And you are still posting. You said you would stop. You personally promised me," Lively commented on the now-deleted post, per Buzzfeed.

The Shallows actress went on to criticize the page for "exploiting" her daughters.

"This is not casual appreciation. This is YOU also exploiting very young children. Please. Delete. Please," she wrote, adding: "Some parents are ok with this. We. Are. NOT. [sic]"

Support From Fans

Lively, who later screenshotted the post and shared it to her Instagram stories, also posted a screenshot from another account, @celebritykind, which was standing up for the actress and for other celebrities whose lives have been plagued by invasive paparazzi culture.

"There is not a single media outlet or fan account out there that doesn't know which celebs do and don't want their kids [sic] faces published," read the message, which called for users to "unfollow" and "report" platforms that publish celebrity kids photos "knowing they're going the against the wishes of the parent."

Lively also included a personal message thanking fans for helping her get the post taken down, Elle magazine is reporting.

"Thank you to everyone UNFOLLOWING accounts who exploit children," she wrote. "YOU make ALL the difference. Thank you for your integrity. Thank you."

Blake Lively's Stand Against Paparazzi

The mother-of-three has repeatedly condemned the practice of photographing celebrity children, particularly without parental consent. Just three months ago, she denounced Daily Mail Australia for publishing a photo of her walking with her daughters down the street in New York.

Alongside the snap was a shot of Lively smiling and waving at the camera, which the actress clarified she posed for solo just so the paparazzi "would leave my children alone — because it was frightening."

"You edit together these images to look like I'm happily waving, but that is deceitful," Lively commented on the image, per Comments by Celebs.

The Hollywood star continued: "Do you do background checks on the photographers you pay to stalk children? Where is your morality here? I would like to know. Or do you simply not care about the safety of children?"

She First Spoke Out In 2018

Lively first made her stance clear on the topic as early as 2018 when her daughter James was photographed by paparazzi lurking at Martha Stewart's Easter bash. Not only did she issue a statement for publications to remove the pic, she also reached out to Instagram fan accounts asking them to delete the photo.

Meanwhile, her official statement to the media read: "The photos were taken by a man hiding outside of a private party, which is disturbing on many levels. We appreciate all magazines, websites and publications who are standing by protecting the privacy of children and vowing to cut off the supply chain to help end the stalking of children."

'Distraught' Alec Baldwin Photographed After Shooting Cinematographer on 'Rust' Movie Set

A major tragedy took place on the New Mexico set of the upcoming film, Rust, on Thursday.

Amid production, as a report from the New York Post has confirmed, 63-year-old actor Alec Baldwin shot the film's cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, 42, and its director, Joel Souza, 48, with an alleged prop gun at the at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe around 2 p.m. on October 21.

According to authorities from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the prop gun discharged, killing Hutchins and leaving Souza hospitalized.

Halyna Hutchins Was Airlifted to a Albuquerque Hospital

"There was an accident today on the New Mexico set of 'Rust' involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks," a production spokesperson told Deadline.

Immediately after the incident occurred, the set went into lockdown as Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Souza, meanwhile, was taken to the Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe, authorities said, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.

Detectives Are Currently Investigating the 'Rust' Shooting

In a statement from the sheriff's office, it was noted that detectives are investigating how the shooting occurred, as well as what type of projectile was discharged from the apparent prop.

According to a report from TMZ, it is believed that either shrapnel or a bullet was discharged from the gun.

Later on Thursday, following the terribly tragic incident, an understandably "distraught" Baldwin was photographed walking around in the parking lot outside the Santa Fe County Sheriff's office, where he had been questioned.

In a photo shared by both the New York Post and TMZ, Baldwin seemed to be completely beside himself with grief as he held his phone to his ear with one hand and held a mask with another.

Just two days before the shocking turn of events, Baldwin and Hutchins were pictured amongst other members of the cast and crew of Rust.

Another report, shared by Showbiz411, revealed that Baldwin was extremely distressed after the shooting and kept frantically asking why he had been handed a "hot gun."

Alec Baldwin Doesn't Understand Why He Was Given a 'Hot Gun'

As Showbizz411 explained, a "hot gun" is a firearm with real ammunition.

"In all my years, I've never been handed a hot gun," he allegedly said.

"The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today's tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna's family and loved ones," the Rust production company said in a statement to the New York Post. "We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department's investigation."

As of late Thursday, no charges were filed.

In the aftermath of his suspension from the Philadelphia 76ers, All-Star point guard Ben Simmons seems eager to be moving on. The 25-year-old NBA star is now looking to unload his New Jersey mansion, which The New York Post is interpreting as a sign he's determined to leave the team for good.

Simmons, who is followed by 5.8 million on Instagram, is asking for $5 million for the Moorestown home, which is located just 20 minutes away from Camden, where the 76ers practice.

According to The New York Post, Simmons is standing to score a hefty profit should he sell his New Jersey pad for the asking price. The basketball player only paid just under $2.3 million for the property back in 2019 and could be walking away with a decent sum from the deal.

The move comes less than four months after Simmons shelled out $17.5 million for a 12,000 square-foot Los Angeles mansion, which has also been interpreted as significant for the direction in which his career might be heading, per The Sports Rush.

Simmons' 10,477-square-foot abode sounds like a dream, boasting five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and an impressive list of amenities that include a spacious foyer with a grand staircase, a formal dining room with a wine wall, a wet bar and a dry bar with a large walk-in pantry, and a gourmet kitchen in addition to the informal dining space.

Likewise, the primary suite comes with another wet bar, fireplace, sitting area, and private terrace.

Simmons put up the home for sale on Wednesday, with Trulia listing publishing some truly incredible photos of the 1.78-acre residence.

Basketball Memorabilia On Display

Located at the end of a cul-de-sac, the manse comes with its own dog park for pet lovers. But perhaps its most exciting feature is the "fully finished entertainment-friendly basement," which "is a marvel to see."

It incorporates an "oversized" home theater with custom couches and lounge chairs, a "massive" fish tank, a billiards area, and a private gaming room with its own full-service bar, bathroom, and candy room.

The basement is rich with basketball memorabilia, including Simmons' framed jerseys and magazine covers lining the walls. There's also a custom neon sign featuring his gamertag, Simmo the Savage.

Not Looking Back

Simmons' decision to sell the gorgeous Philly mansion is being seen as a clear step in breaking away from the Sixers, CBS Sports is reporting.

Although there was some hope that their broken relationship could be fixed when the former No. 1 pick recently rejoined the team after holding out of training camp to refusing to participate in drills, it looks like the rift might be permanent.

In the midst of his suspension on Wednesday and the drama surrounding it, Simmons' availability for the Sixers' season opener remains a big question mark.
