Police have charged the mother of a 12-year-old boy who officials believe was killed due to an alligator attack after escaping his room.

On Sunday, Sept. 7, Hilda Vasquez, the mother of the boy, Bryan Vasquez, was arrested by police and charged with second-degree cruelty to juveniles and negligent homicide in connection with the child's death, the New Orleans Police Department told USA TODAY in an email.

The charge comes after Bryan's body was found nearly two weeks after he was reported missing, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said at a news conference.

The investigation is still ongoing, and the police department has stated that it will not release further details on the case at this time.

What happened?

Bryan's body was located via drone in a lagoon on Tuesday, Aug. 26, according to USA TODAY's previous reporting.

The Orleans Parish Coroner determined that the cause of death was blunt trauma consistent with an alligator attack and subsequent drowning, according to an email the NOPD Public Affairs Division shared with USA TODAY.

When did Bryan Vasquez go missing?

The 12-year-old went missing on Aug. 14, when he left his house on the east side of New Orleans, according to CBS News. He escaped through a bedroom window.

At around 5:20 a.m. local time, on the day Bryan went missing, doorbell footage captured the child, who is nonverbal, walking down the street alone.

Remains were found inside alligator near area where child went missing, according to reports

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries trapped an alligator with human remains inside its stomach in the lagoon where Bryan's body was found, reported local news stations 4WWL and KSLA.

The remains have since been turned over to the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office, where a DNA test will be conducted so officials can determine the identity, according to 4WWL.
