"Oh my God, she got hurt!"

Lola Tung is freaking out after a dart just went flying wide on the set of The Summer I Turned Pretty's final days of filming in late October in Paris. She can't stop apologizing to the crew people in the sharp prop's line of fire. "Stop, stop, stop," Tung calls out. "Are you okay? Are you sure? This is dangerous."

For next 45 minutes, the star keeps checking in with the crew in between takes to make sure no one is injured. But while Tung is struggling with the game of darts in real life, it's going much better for her character, Belly, in the scene. It's snowing on Christmas Eve in the City of Love, and Belly is on a romantic date. The question on everyone's minds going into the final two episodes is which Fisher brother Belly will end up with, but right now, in this cozy brasserie over a glass of wine, the answer is ... neither.

Of course, that could all change once a certain letter arrives in the mail (as teased in the trailer for the final three episodes in Paris). But at this point in Belly's travels abroad, Tung portrays her Conrad (Christopher Briney) vs. Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) heartbreak firmly in her rearview mirror. She's laughing and flirting while on a magical date ripped right out from classic rom-coms with an all-new love interest. Yeah, she's definitely not in Cousins anymore.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is in uncharted territory as it zooms towards its series finale on Sept. 17. Creator Jenny Han's third and final book in the series, We'll Always Have Summer, ends abruptly after Jeremiah calls off the wedding, with only an epilogue dated "a couple years later" explaining how Belly ended up studying abroad in Spain for her junior year of college before those aforementioned letters changed everything. In only two pages, readers find out who Belly ends up with for her ultimate happily-ever-after, but Han wanted to extend the conclusion of the story in her Prime Video TV adaptation — with some major changes.

"There is so much that is going to surprise fans about how much we're showing of Belly in Paris and the whole ending," Han tells Entertainment Weekly on set in between takes of Belly's date. "It's not just an epilogue."

Even relocating Belly's European adventures from Spain to France came as a surprise, but Han laughs at how she's been teasing this change from the books since the very beginning of the show. Not only did she personally want to film episodes in Paris, but she also felt that the city added more to Belly's growth as she leaves Cousins behind for the first time in her life.

"I always planned to shoot the end in Paris," Han explains. "I mean, the last book is named after Casablanca, so it always felt right. I've been putting in Paris Easter eggs since the very beginning of the show too, like how Belly was reading The Hunger Games in French, so I always was planning this — whether we shot there or not."

Han laughs as she adds, "I almost wanted to make it impossible for Amazon to say no to us filming the end in Paris. I just always loved the idea of a girl going to find herself in Paris and fall in love, it's just so much more romantic."

She's not exaggerating — while this EW writer has been a proud member of Team Conrad since first reading Han's books 15 years ago, watching Belly drink and flirt with someone new in this scene had me seriously questioning who I was rooting for her to end up with. The chemistry was off the charts, and I was actually swooning for a non-Fisher boy. In the words of Conrad himself, "Who are you?!" (In my defense, I was also extremely delirious — this night shoot ended at 4:15 a.m. on top of the jet lag I was already feeling.)

But there's so much more that we have yet to see from Belly's time in Paris and what (or who) ultimately brings her home ... wherever "home" may be for her now. Han loved getting to explore who Belly is after the books end, which is why the final season ended up being supersized with 11 episodes.

"I kept adding more and more to the last scripts the longer I was in Paris, because I kept thinking of more that needed to be included," Han says. "There's just so much to living on your own, for the first time, in a foreign place, and that's important for Belly as she's growing up."

If her first 24 hours spent running around the city after her stolen backpack are any indication, she's got a lot more growing up to do — including how to (safely) throw a dart.
