On the Fashion Neurosis podcast, Malkovich made rare comments about his costar, calling her "someone I valued greatly as a colleague"
"When that relationship becomes more than collegial," he reflected, "then you lose a great colleague"
John Malkovich is reflecting on his 1998 liaison, during the making of Dangerous Liaisons, with costar Michelle Pfeiffer.
The actor, 71, was asked on the Fashion Neurosis podcast about his "love affair with perhaps the most beautiful woman in the world at the time," as host Bella Freud put it.
"It's not something I ever really talk about," began Malkovich.
"In our work, the work I do normally, you make emotional bonds with people very quickly. That's kind of part of the work," he explained. "Very rarely, those bonds extend beyond the work."
Pfeiffer, now 67, "was someone I valued greatly as a colleague," continued the Being John Malkovich star, calling his scene partner "great fun" and "incredibly fair." By contrast, he added, "I probably wasn't [fair] — I mean, I certainly wasn't."
A rep for Pfeiffer could not be reached by PEOPLE.
Following the release of Dangerous Liaisons, outlets reported that the Oscar nominee had an affair with Pfeiffer during production on the Stephen Frears-directed period romantic drama, which starred Glenn Close. Malkovich's marriage with the late actress Glenne Headly ended soon thereafter. The Batman Returns star separated from her husband, actor Peter Horton, shortly afterward as well.

"I think I've learned over the course of my life that a great colleague is actually kind of rarer than anything," Malkovich told Freud during the wide-ranging conversation about his artistic career and approach to fashion.
"When that relationship becomes more than collegial, or more than a friendship, even a profound friendship, then — at least in my experience, and it might be my particular psychology or stupidity or ineptness or all of the above — then you lose a great colleague," he said.
Malkovich also mentioned Lithuanian actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite, saying, "[we] have remained great friends and colleagues because there was a line never crossed, a border never crossed. That's kind of what I've learned, that when a thing like that happens, it might be not retrievable."
