Amid escalating tensions in Chicago over the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents on Saturday shot and wounded a woman they alleged was part of a convoy of protesters that rammed their vehicles during an "ambush."

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Border Patrol agents opened fire on the woman in self-defense, alleging she was armed with a semiautomatic weapon and was driving one of three vehicles that "cornered" and rammed the CBP agents' vehicles.

Describing the incident as "really strange," Noem alleged that before the shooting, a caravan of 10 vehicles was following the CBP agents and officers through the streets of Chicago.

"They had followed them and gotten them cornered, pinned them down and then our agents, when getting out of their cars, they tried to run them over and had semiautomatic handguns on them to where our agents had to protect themselves and shots were fired and an individual ended up in the hospital that was attacking these officers," Noem said in a statement on Sunday. The woman who was shot was identified by the DHS on Sunday as Marimar Martinez. DHS officials referred to Martinez and the other protesters involved in the incident as "domestic terrorists."

"The scene became increasingly violent as more domestic terrorists gathered and began throwing smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles at DHS law enforcement," the DHS alleged in its statement.

Noem alleged that Martinez had previously threatened the CBP agents, shouting expletives at them and "told them that they all needed to go down."

The DHS alleged in its statement that Martinez also "has a history of doxxing federal agents."The FBI took Martinez into custody after she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released from a hospital, according to the DHS.

An alleged driver of a second vehicle in the protest convoy was also accused of ramming the CBP vehicles and taken into custody. He was identified as Anthony Ian Ruiz, according to the DHS.

DHS officials also alleged that as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were responding to the Saturday morning shooting, "a domestic terrorist followed them and rammed their vehicle in an attempt to run them off the road."

"An ICE vehicle popped a tire and was subsequently mobbed by domestic terrorists, forcing law enforcement to abandon the vehicle for their own safety. The vehicle was significantly damaged," according to the DHS.

The name of the suspected driver who allegedly attempted to run the ICE vehicle off the road was not immediately released. Officials said the suspect was arrested and is in the custody of Homeland Security Investigations.

Several CBP officers were injured during the confrontations on Saturday and taken to hospitals for treatment, according to the DHS.

"We will not allow domestic terrorists to attack our law enforcement. If you lay a hand on law enforcement, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

Noem said DHS intelligence indicates that the group involved in Saturday's clash with CBP agents are "organized" and are recruiting more people to join them. Noem said the group is "making plans to ambush and to kill" immigration officers.

"We have specific officers and agents that have bounties that have been put on their heads. It's about $2,000 to kidnap them, $10,000 to kill them," Noem said.

The violent encounters on Saturday came as Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said President Donald Trump will send in 300 National Guard troops despite his repeated rejections of federal mobilization to Chicago.

Pritzker said in social media posts that the Trump administration had given him an ultimatum: "Call up your troops, or we will."

"In the coming hours, the Trump administration intends to federalize 300 members of the Illinois National Guard," the governor said.

Noem confirmed the order during an interview with conservative host Benny Johnson.

"I sent a request to [Defense] Secretary [Pete] Hegseth. Will be rolling in in the next 24 hours. I put a request in for them to Chicago," Noem said adding that she also put in a request for Portland, Oregon.

Noem said she was sending reinforcements to Chicago.

"I am deploying more special operations to control the scene. Reinforcements are on their way. If you see a law enforcement officer today, thank them," she said in a statement.

As protests broke out in Chicago, armed border patrol agents deployed what appeared to be chemical irritants toward protesters.

"Even with all the masks, it still burns a lot. And a lot of the people actually only had masks and water," Aida Flores, a protester who filmed the confrontation, said during a Facebook livestream.

Over the last month, Trump has threatened to send the National Guard into cities, particularly Democratic-run ones, to curb crime and bolster immigration enforcement agents.

He sent the National Guard to Washington, D.C., in August. Service members were sent to transit, parks and other areas.

"This country is a country of laws. If you don't like the laws, go change them. We are enforcing them. That is sending a message to the whole world," Noem told Johnson on Friday.

Pritzker has not been shy about his opposition to Trump and his threats of federal deployment

"They will pull hardworking Americans out of their regular jobs and away from their families all to participate in a manufactured performance -- not a serious effort the protect public safety. For Donald Trump, this has never been about safety. This is about control," the governor said.
