Lily Allen is opening up about why she's so candid about motherhood with her two kids.
The singer spoke with British Vogue in a new interview and discussed why she finds it important to be candid with her daughters about the struggles of motherhood. Allen, who shares daughters Marnie Rose, 12, and Ethel Mary, 13, with ex-husband Sam Cooper, said she hopes that by being honest with her girls, it will help them not make the same mistakes.
"I try not to smother them. I feel like I can try and shield them and protect them from things, but I don't think that really works," said Allen. "A big part of what I'm doing at the moment creatively is for them. I need to show them that, yeah, we've been through something f------ devastating – twice now – and that I can get us through."

She explained that her daughters have seen her in the "depths of despair" this last year. After listening to her music, Allen said they're now proud of her.
"I feel like I often talk on the podcast about how f------ hard it is to be a mum," said Allen. "And people come to me and say, 'Imagine your children reading this.'"
"And it's like, yes, I want them to know that so that they don't do the same thing! You know? I felt totally gaslit by my mum about motherhood," she continued, adding that her mother would tell her that everything is fine.
Elsewhere in the article, Allen spoke about whether her ex-husband David Harbour plans to be in her daughters' lives moving forward.
"You'll have to ask him," said Allen. However, she notes that her relationship with Cooper is in a much better place.
"Me and Sam, we've got a good relationship — I wouldn't say it's a friendship, although we are friendly. His dad died earlier this year and we spoke a lot on the phone around then because I loved his dad and we share children together."

Later in the interview, Allen shared that while it has been a turbulent past few months, her daughters have had a great experience living in America.
"My kids had an amazing experience living in America for five years, and I have a lot of compassion for my ex-husband," she said of Harbour. "I think we all suffer."
This past January, Allen spoke on an episode of her BBC podcast Miss Me? about how difficult parenting can be when you're going through something hard. "I can say, it's really tough – they are always there and you have to be present and there for them," Allen shared.
"And that's okay, when things in life are going well and you're coping, it's really nice to have the kids around. They're a joy. One of the main sources of joy in one's life," she added.
However, Allen said that when things aren't going well and "life is tough," it's really hard to "hold things together."
"We are a support network for each other and encourage each other to talk about our feelings but I think the main thing is telling them we're going to get through it and be fine," the "F--- You" singer said.
