- Bowen Yang feared that *Saturday Night Live* viewers were "maybe getting sick of me."

- The comedian said *SNL* boss Lorne Michaels reassured him, "There's more for you to do. I need you."

- Yang also described *SNL* as a "boot camp" that helps prepare cast members for future endeavors.

Bowen Yang has unfinished business at Studio 8H.

As the comedian prepares to return for his seventh season as a *Saturday Night Live* cast member, he said in a new interview with PEOPLE that he has at times questioned his place on the show but was ultimately compelled to come back.

"I've always gone by the instinct of, do I have more to do? And I feel like I do," Yang said of the upcoming season 51. "Even [*SNL* boss] Lorne [Michaels] and I talked about it, and Lorne was like, 'You have more to do.'"

Yang went on to explain that Michaels' assurance "means a lot" because he feared that *SNL* viewers might have grown tired of seeing him on the sketch show.

"I even confessed to him. I was like, 'I feel the audience is maybe getting sick of me,'"  Yang recalled. "And he was like, 'That's not true. There's more for you to do. I need you.'"

The comedian, who first joined *SNL* as a writer for season 44, said he hopes to continue to "honor" Michaels' wishes. "That man has changed my life, and I owe a lot of my life to that show," he said. "And I love working there, the people at best. I really love each of them so much."

'SNL' cast changes: Here's everyone leaving, returning, or new for season 51

Yang also discussed the transient nature of *SNL*'s cast, which recently saw Ego Nwodim, Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and featured player Emil Wakim exit its ranks ahead of season 51.

"What I've always thought, what I think everybody knows, is that *SNL* is this boot camp, and that implies that there is a next phase you train for something else," Yang opined. "It's always a transitional place, and I think it is always a launching pad."

He further noted that the "launching pad" framework still applies to the cast members who have remained on the show for ages "Even for people who stay on the show, like Kenan [Thompson], let's say, he has still used that show to help expand his possibilities," Yang said. "I think that's going to be true for all of the people who aren't coming back. I'm so excited to see what they do. I'm excited for the new cast."

Yang recently paid tribute to Gardner — whom he performed alongside during every season of his *SNL* tenure — on an episode of his *Las Culturistas* podcast.

"You are one of the greats," he said of his departing castmate. "You will go down in history."

Yang went on to call Gardner "a true anchor on that show," noting that "her heart was so big, and clearly so f‑‑‑ing funny."
