Hurricane forecasters have turned their attention from Erin to other developing tropical systems in the Atlantic, including one that could become Tropical Storm Fernand and may follow a path similar to Erin's.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two disturbances, Invest AL90 and Invest AL99 − so-called as "invest" is short for "investigation" − in the Atlantic, with the chance of developing into something stronger. The more likely to do so is Invest AL90, which is expected to develop into a tropical depression and intensify into a tropical storm on Sunday, Aug. 24, as it moves northward, the NHC said in an outlook issued at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 23.

Also being tracked: four more tropical waves in the Caribbean to the east of Invest AL99, which is also a tropical wave located about 850 miles east of the Windward Islands.

Potential tropical storm may impact Bermuda

Forecasters have warned those in Bermuda to monitor the progress of Invest AL90, which is associated with showers and thunderstorms, as it is currently about 500 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, the NHC said. The system has a near 100% chance of formation over the next 48 hours, the NHC said.

The storm could follow a path similar to that of Hurricane Erin, but is expected to turn northward much sooner, which means it could come close to, or directly hit, Bermuda as a hurricane, according to AccuWeather. "This storm is expected to produce several inches of rain, wind gusts of 60-80 mph, rough seas and surf and storm surge of several feet," AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DaSilva said in a forecast.

When the system develops into a tropical storm, it will be named Fernand. An Air Force Reconnaissance aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system on Saturday afternoon, the NHC said.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two systems in the Atlantic Ocean.

The other disturbance, Invest AL99, made up of disorganized showers and thunderstorms, is located 850 miles east of the Windward Islands. It is expected to bring locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds to parts of the islands, which include Grenada and St. Lucia, but forecasters put its likelihood of development at 20% over the next seven days., the NHC said.

Hurricane season storm trackerHurricane center tracking four tropical waves in Atlantic

In addition to Invest AL90 and Invest AL99, the National Hurricane Center is tracking four tropical waves in the Atlantic:

A far eastern Atlantic tropical wave is moving across the Cabo Verde Islands moving west.

A central Atlantic tropical wave, located near Invest AL99, is moving west also.

An eastern Caribbean tropical wave near Puerto Rico to western Venezuela is expected to bring some widely scattered showers and an isolated thunderstorm from near the U.S. Virgin Islands to south of the coast of Puerto Rico to the Mona Passage.

A western Caribbean tropical wave near the Gulf of Honduras through Honduras to far northwest Nicaragua into the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Each of the tropical waves are moving west and do not pose a threat at this time. However, experts say to be prepared for hurricane season.

A tropical wave in the Pacific, which is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles south of the coast of southwestern Mexico, is expected to become a tropical depression by early next week, the center said. Forecasters give the system, which is moving west-northwesterward, a 40% chance of formation over the next two days and 70% chance over the next seven days.

What is a tropical wave?

The term "tropical wave" describes atmospheric conditions, according to AccuWeather.com.

Tropical waves are elongated areas, or troughs, of relatively low pressure that move east to west across the tropics, moving westward from Africa into the Atlantic.

A wave can lead to the formation of a tropical cyclone, which in turn may develop into a tropical storm or hurricane, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

How do hurricanes form?

Hurricanes are born in the tropics, above warm water. Clusters of thunderstorms can develop over the ocean when water temperatures exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If conditions are right, the clusters swirl into a storm known as a tropical wave or tropical depression.

A tropical depression becomes a named tropical storm once its sustained wind speeds reaches 39 miles per hour. When its winds reach 74 mph, the storm officially becomes a hurricane.

Prepare now for hurricanes

Delaying potentially life-saving preparations could mean waiting until it's too late. "Get your disaster supplies while the shelves are still stocked, and get that insurance checkup early, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period," NOAA recommends.

Prepare now for hurricanes: Here's what you should do to stay safe before a storm arrives

Develop an evacuation plan: If you are at risk from hurricanes, you need an evacuation plan. Now is the time to begin planning where you would go and how you would get there.

Assemble disaster supplies: Whether you're evacuating or sheltering-in-place, you're going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy aftermath, NOAA said.

Get an insurance checkup and document your possessions: Contact your insurance company or agent now and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough insurance to repair or even replace your home and/or belongings. Remember, home and renters insurance doesn't cover flooding, so you'll need a separate policy for it. Flood insurance is available through your company, agent, or the National Flood Insurance Program. Act now, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

Create a family communication plan: NOAA said to take the time now to write down your hurricane plan, and share it with your family. Determine family meeting places, and make sure to include an out-of-town location in case of evacuation.

Strengthen your home: Now is the time to improve your home's ability to withstand hurricane impacts. Trim trees; install storm shutters, accordion shutters, and/or impact glass; seal outside wall openings.

President Donald Trump kicked off the week meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders at the White House — just days after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska — and said he has roughly two weeks to determine how the U.S. will proceed in the ongoing negotiations.

A primary focus of the meetings was discussing various security measures to prevent Russian aggression against Ukraine again, after the Trump administration reported that Putin was on board with permitting the U.S. and its European allies to provide additional protection for Ukraine, akin to protections included in NATO's Article 5 mutual defense clause.

However, Trump said Tuesday that sending U.S. troops to Ukraine to bolster security in the region was off the table.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gestures as U.S. President Donald Trump reacts during a meeting at the Oval Office of the White House, amid negotiations to end the Russian war in Ukraine, in Washington, Aug. 18, 2025.

Meanwhile, Trump told reporters Friday that he'll have a better sense of whether a deal that ends the conflict is feasible and what kind of actions the U.S. should take moving forward on negotiations in the coming weeks.

"We'll see what happens. I think over the next two weeks, we're going to find out which way it's going to go," Trump told reporters Friday.

"It's going to be a very important decision," Trump said. "And that's whether or not it's massive sanctions or massive tariffs, or both. Or do we do nothing and say, 'It's your fight?'"

Here's what also happened this week:

Trump also joined law enforcement and National Guard troops in Washington Thursday evening amid his administration's federal takeover of the city and efforts to crackdown on crime.

"We've had some incredible results and results have come out and it's like a different place," Trump told the police and National Guard troops Thursday. "It's like a different city."

Vice President JD Vance visited National Guard troops in Washington's Union Station Wednesday.

"We are seeing really substantial effects because these guys are busting their a--," Vance said Wednesday.

"Right here in Union Station, you have vagrants, you have drug addicts, you have the chronically homeless, you have the mentally ill who harass, who threatened violence, who attacked families," Vance said. "And they've done it for far too long. This should be a monument to American greatness."

Trump initially mobilized 800 D.C. National Guard troops as part of his effort to reduce crime in Washington on Aug. 11. Since then, National Guard troops from Ohio, West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee also have been tapped to support the Trump administration's effort.

Trump also unveiled plans with FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the Oval Office Friday to hold the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center Dec. 5. During the event, FIFA will divyy up all the teams into 12 different groups.

Trump Announces Kennedy As Fifa World Cup Draw Venue

"On Dec. 5 of this year, the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw will take place at the Kennedy Center. Some people refer to it as the Trump-Kennedy Center, but we're not prepared to do that quite yet – maybe in a week or so," Trump said.

"But right here in Washington, D.C., it's a tremendous honor to bring the global event and this incredible group of people and these unbelievable athletes — the best athletes in the world — to the cultural center of our nation's capital," Trump said.

U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas ©U.S.. House

(The Center Square) – Four Republicans so far are running for Texas attorney general.

U.S. Chip Roy is the latest to announce he's running for AG, joining state Sens. Joan Huffman and Mayes Middleton, and Aaron Reitz, a former Texas deputy attorney general.

They are vying to replace Attorney General Ken Paxton who is challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

Middleton, a Republican from Galveston, first announced his bid in April. He's the only candidate with no prosecutorial experience. President of Middleton Oil Company, he also runs ranching, cattle, and farming operations. Middleton has served in both the Texas House and Senate and consistently ranks as among the most conservative members. He has championed a partial ban on taxpayer-funded lobbying, advocated for parental rights and school choice, authored bills to protect women's and girls' sports, bathrooms and locker rooms, and a ban on COVID vaccine mandates, among other legislation. He's rejected a state pension and taxpayer-funded healthcare and donates his entire state salary to local charities.

Huffman is running to become the first female attorney general of Texas. A former Harris County prosecutor and Criminal District Court judge, Huffman is the only three-time recipient of the Texas District and County Attorneys Association's Law and Order Award. In the Texas Senate, she's authored numerous bills to strengthen the criminal justice system and bring transparency and accountability to the judiciary.

Huffman led the charge against the defund the police movement by authoring a new law, "Back the Blue Act," which penalizes cities and counties that defund law enforcement. She authored critical bail reform legislation, leading a bipartisan movement in response to judges releasing violent criminals onto the streets only to keep committing violent crime. She authored new laws to enable the removal of prosecutors who refuse to enforce the law, to increase penalties for violent crimes, including for fentanyl trafficking involving murder, and several measures to protect victims, including human trafficking victims.

Reitz served in the AG's office during the impeachment of Paxton, the only attorney general to be impeached in Texas history. Paxton was impeached by 60 House Republicans on 20 charges, including bribery. The Texas Senate acquitted him along party lines. During the impeachment trial, longtime Texas Ranger David Maxwell alleged female employes made sexual harassment complaints against Reitz. After the trial, additional lawsuits were filed by Paxton's top deputies against each other alleging sexual harassment, falsifying documents and witness tampering, multiple news outlets reported.

Reitz next worked for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz while being called to testify in a federal bribery and extortion probe into Paxton. He then worked for the Trump Justice Department for three months.

More recently, Reitz came under fire for posting what appeared to be photo ops in Kerrville after the devastating Hill Country floods. Other criticism includes deleting more than 4,000 controversial tweets, including supporting arranged marriages, CBS News first reported.

Reitz, who ran for the Texas House District 47 seat in 2020 and lost, says he "embodies the Texas values of courage, perseverance, and a refusal to bend the knee" and will "defend law and order" and "fight woke ideology."

Roy announced his AG bid on Thursday, roughly eight months after President Donald Trump encouraged Republicans to primary him. As Roy opposed increasing the national debt and spending, Trump called him, "The very unpopular 'Congressman' from Texas," saying he was "getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory – All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists have to be done away with," multiple news outlets reported.

Roy says he delivered on Trump's agenda and wanted to take his experience in Congress, as a federal prosecutor and a former First Assistant AG of Texas to "fight for Texas from Texas."

Roy previously worked under Paxton and for Cruz, was senior counsel to former Gov. Rick Perry, served as counsel on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and was the Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Texas. Serving four terms in Congress, Roy fought to reduce the size of government, reduce taxes, reduce government waste, fraud and abuse, strengthen border security, target foreign threats coming from cartels and the Chinese Communist Party, secure U.S. elections among other intiatives.

As attorney general, he says he'll go after "Soros-funded judges and DA's putting criminals on the streets," as well as judicial mandates "that Texans pay for illegals in our public schools."

It is unclear how Roy would do this in light of the Texas Constitution's separation of powers. The Texas Constitution states that only the legislature and Texas Supreme Court can remove judges under specific circumstances. The Texas Constitution also requires that a free public education be provided to all children in Texas regardless of nationality.

The Republican primary election is March 3, 2026.

The lawyers for Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia said that government officials tried to coerce him into pleading guilty to criminal charges or face deportation to Uganda.

Abrego Garcia, a Maryland construction worker who was deported to El Salvador and then returned to the U.S. to face smuggling charges, was released from prison in Tennessee on Friday. His release comes under a judge's order that set the terms of release pending a trial date currently scheduled for January 2026.

Attorneys indicated earlier this month that they would arrange private security to accompany Abrego Garcia from Tennessee, where he was held, to Maryland, where he lives with his wife and child. But federal authorities have signaled that, even though they brought Abrego Garcia back to the U.S., they may seek to have him deported again — this time potentially to an unspecified third country — if he is released from prison. It was not clear if such a deportation would occur before Abrego Garcia's trial for smuggling.

RELATED STORY | Kilmar Abrego Garcia released from prison in Tennessee, his attorney says

"The government immediately responded to Mr. Abrego's release with outrage," Abrego Garcia's lawyers wrote in their court filing. "Despite having requested and received assurances from the government of Costa Rica that Mr. Abrego would be accepted there, within minutes of his release from pretrial custody, an ICE representative informed Mr. Abrego's counsel that the government intended to deport Mr. Abrego to Uganda and ordered him to report to ICE's Baltimore Field Office Monday morning."

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem released a statement condemning U.S. District Court Judge Paula Xinis for releasing Abrego Garcia.

"Activist liberal judges have attempted to obstruct our law enforcement every step of the way in removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from our country," she said on Friday. "Today, we reached a new low with this publicity hungry Maryland judge mandating this illegal alien who is a MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator be allowed free."

His attorneys added that Abrego Garcia's case was part of the government's larger strategy to retaliate against him for fighting his deportation to El Salvador.

"On Friday evening, the government informed Mr. Abrego that he has until first thing Monday morning—precisely when he must report to ICE's Baltimore Field Office—to accept a plea in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica, or else that offer will be off the table forever. There can be only one interpretation of these events: the DOJ, DHS, and ICE are using their collective powers to force Mr. Abrego to choose between a guilty plea followed by relative safety, or rendition to Uganda, where his safety and liberty would be under threat," his attorneys wrote.

Homeland Security officials say that Abrego Garcia is subject to immediate deportation as a migrant not lawfully present in the U.S. He was among more than 200 undocumented migrants who were deported to El Salvador in March. However, his circumstances were extraordinary because he had a standing court order that prohibited his return to El Salvador after he had proven in court that he feared for his safety if he returned to his country of birth.

Once Abrego Garcia was returned to the U.S., federal officials accused him of being involved in human trafficking, allegations that stemmed from a 2022 traffic stop. Even though he was not arrested or charged then, officials brought charges earlier this year.

Stephanie NolascoAugust 23, 2025 at 11:00 PM

Alan Hamel was mourning the loss of his wife, Suzanne Somers, when he crossed paths with a familiar face.

The former television host recently confirmed his new romance with "Blade Runner" actress Joanna Cassidy, who was a guest on his show decades ago. Cassidy, 80, also starred with Somers in the 1985 miniseries "Hollywood Wives." According to Hamel, 89, the pair ran into each other months ago.

"There was that connection," he told Fox News Digital. "And we've spent a lot of time being with each other, which is great. And I'm almost 10 years older than her, so I'm Joanna's older man. She's always wanted an older man. And I came along… We have both been very active in the entertainment business most of our lives, so neither one of us has anything to prove. We've both relaxed into what I refer to as the cocktail hour of our lives."

Suzanne Somers' Widower Finds Romance With Late Wife's 'Hollywood Wives' Costar

Alan Hamel (left) and actress Suzanne Somers are seen here enjoying one of their many outings together in 2017. The couple married on November 19, 1977, and their union lasted until her passing on October 15, 2023.

Somers, who famously starred as Chrissy Snow in the sitcom "Three's Company," died in 2023 at age 76. The actress battled breast cancer for over 23 years. She and Hamel were married from 1977 until her death.

Hamel admitted that "it was odd" stepping into the dating scene after enjoying a happy marriage for so long.

"Suzanne and I used to go out on dates once a week, sometimes twice," he shared. "We'd get dressed up, go to a nice restaurant, order a nice bottle of wine, and sit there, enjoying the evening and each other. That went for 55 years, even before we were officially married. So, I was used to dating. I love dating. So, when I felt ready to date again, I did not want some gossip [magazine] saying, 'Alan is now dating.'"

"So, what I did was invite a lot of female friends," he shared. "I'm not romantically involved with any of them, but I would invite two of them who know each other really well to go on a date with me. The three of us went on a date. If someone looked at the three of us, obviously, they knew it wasn't a romantic date. But those were the first dates I took on. And it felt good. I remembered how much fun dating was."

As Hamel quietly grieved, he was encouraged to meet up with Cassidy. The connection was instant.

"It was quite natural," Cassidy told Fox News Digital about their first date. "I found myself falling into a place that felt very comfortable. I felt very much at ease... I think our first date lasted three days."

Joanna Cassidy and Alan Hamel have been dating for several months.

"I also believe that, energetically, you can draw the right people to you," she shared. "I mostly don't call Alan 'Alan.' I call him 'Ah.' It also happens to be his initials. It just seems like the right name for our mystical get-togetherness. And look, I was quite prepared to move along. I've lived alone for a long time. I've met people, but no one really floated my boat like Alan did. I just met him, and I went, 'Wow, this is a solid connection. This is great.'"

Actress Joanna Cassidy attends the premiere of "The Uppercut" on January 17, 2025, in Berlin, Germany.

Hamel is also fulfilling a promise he made to his late wife during the last days of her life.

"When we knew the end was near, she said to me, 'Once I'm gone, I don't want you to mope around,'" Hamel recalled. "'I want you to live your life.' I told her OK. But then she looked at me and said, 'I'm serious. I don't want you to mope around.' Again, I said OK."

Suzanne Somers and husband Alan Hamel pose for a portrait in 1980 in Los Angeles, California. Shortly before her death, the actress told her husband she wanted him to live his life.

"When Suzanne passed, I was suddenly living alone," he said. "But I have this incredible family. There's not one dud among them – three kids and six grandkids. I see some of them weekly… And after Suzanne passed, they made sure I was never alone for the first two and a half months. We would sit around, tell stories about Suzanne, have all the big laughs, look back at photographs and hundreds of hours of tapes. It's been wonderful… And along came Joanna. She has been my only date since she arrived on the scene, which I'm grateful for."

"If a relationship is long and happy, and suddenly your partner disappears, I think there can still be hope," he reflected.

Hamel noted the modern approach to dating has never felt right to him.

Alan Hamel is seen here in the '60s. Joanna Cassidy was a guest on his show decades ago.

"I've never been on a dating site," he said. "What I keep hearing is that they're dangerous. People put pictures of themselves that were taken 40 years ago. It's hard to believe anything anybody says on a dating site. Now I'm sure there are legit sites, but I have no interest in them at all."

And Cassidy is different, he chuckled.

"Joanna is very active in things that I would never attempt to do, like air bungee. She also takes these classes where she's inside a silk envelope upside down, suspended in the air doing yoga. Who thinks this stuff up? Meanwhile, I'm into relaxing. I'm an expert at sitting still. I love putting my brain in neutral and just staring. When people say, 'What are you thinking about?' The answer is nothing. But Joanna's brain is the antithesis of mine. It's going 24/7. The expression, 'ants in your pants,' applies to her. She's constantly in motion. She never stops. I'm just sitting."

"I have a landscaping business," Cassidy boasted. "I'm a photographer, designer, gardener, animal rescuer, and I still work in show business. I have a movie coming out in October, "Killing Faith" with Bill Pullman. And I just finished a film with Beverly D'Angelo… It's very hard for me to sit still. I have to constantly keep busy, constantly be in motion. And there are lots of things that I love to do, things that bring my life joy every day. I think that's very important to have. And Alan knows that."

"When we knew the end was near, she said to me, 'Once I'm gone, I don't want you to mope around,'" Alan Hamel recalled to Fox News Digital.

Hamel also keeps busy making sure Somers' legacy is kept alive. He and his family are hands-on in running SuzanneSomers.com, where fans can purchase her beauty and wellness products. They're active on her social media accounts and share her words of wisdom when it comes to health. They are also in the process of launching a "Suzanne AI" where fans can "interact with her one-on-one."

Hamel and Cassidy are happily enjoying their blossoming romance. They remained coy when asked if love was in the air.

Alan Hamel told Fox News Digital he's enjoying "the cocktail hour" of his life.

"I love love," said Hamel. "I cherish love – all kinds of love. I have friends I love. There are so many different kinds of love. But in terms of romantic love, I don't think there could be anything greater than when two people suddenly find that they're attracted to one another in many different ways. There's an uncovering of layers."

Suzanne Somers and Joanna Cassidy costarred in the miniseries "Hollywood Wives" in 1985.

"I think that love is when you're willing to really put yourself aside and make that other person your focus," chimed Cassidy. "I think it has to do with the ego going away and dissolving. It's about really being able to listen to someone else. I find that you go into a state of awe. I'll go, 'Wow, I am really present with this person.' And you won't hear me say the word 'love' a lot. I am very quiet about that. It's because it means so much to me. It has to be really true."

And it's never too late to embark on a new romantic journey, she insisted.

Joanna Cassidy told Fox News Digital it's never too late to embark on a new romance.

"Don't give up," she said. "There are billions of people on the planet. It's difficult to trust people. But I think if you stay in a very hopeful place and have positive thoughts, life can open up to you in unexpected ways."
