A high school senior died after going swimming with friends after dark at a beach that was closed due to dangerous weather conditions

Sameer Quadri, 17, of Skokie, Ill., was pulled from the waters at Lighthouse Beach in Evanston and declared dead

Rescue crews recalled waves as high as five feet when they arrived at the scene

A family is mourning the loss of their loved one after an Illinois teen went swimming with friends in a lake on Wednesday, Aug. 20, and never resurfaced.

Sameer Quadri, 17, of Skokie, Ill., was confirmed dead by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office after the Niles North High School senior was last seen at Lighthouse Beach in Evanston, ABC 7 Chicago, NBC Chicago, and WGN-TV reported.

"We are heartbroken to share the passing of Sameer Quadri. He left us far too soon, but in his time here, he touched countless lives," his older brother said in a statement to WGN News.

Sameer is survived by three siblings, including a twin brother.

"Sameer had one of the biggest hearts we have ever known. He was endlessly kind, always willing to drop whatever he was doing to help someone in need whether it was offering a laugh, a hand, or simply his presence," the statement continued.

He was remembered as someone who never gave up, not even after tearing his ACL.

His sibling said their family's time with the teen "was cut short," however, "his memory will live forever in our hearts."

"We will always remember his smile that lit up every room, his kindness that lifted us when we were down, and his spirit that never quit," the statement concluded. "As a family, we ask for your prayers and support during this difficult time. Thank you."

The National Weather Service previously issued a "high swim risk" for Lake Michigan beaches through Thursday afternoon, Aug. 21, NBC Chicago reported. "If you have plans to head to the beach, expect dangerous swimming conditions, with guarded beaches closed or restricted," the agency said.

Sameer's friends immediately contacted emergency services when the teen did not resurface while swimming around 8:50 p.m. local time.

"We got a call from a group of adolescents that were swimming at Lighthouse Beach. They noticed one of their friends did not resurface," Matt Smith, Evanston Fire Department division chief of special operations, told NBC Chicago.

He added that at the time of Sameer's death, the beach where the victim and his friends were swimming was closed with a red flag warning for "extremely rough conditions."

Tim Mignon, a Battalion Chief with the Evanston Fire Department, said when crews arrived within minutes of being called, the waves were between three and five feet, per WGN News.

"The wave conditions were pretty severe. I only had two members at one time in the water, and they were getting pushed around pretty good," Mignon said.

The funeral for Sameer, who was a member of his school's basketball team, was held on Friday, Aug. 22, per ABC 7.

The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project has tracked 31 drownings in Lake Michigan this year.
