Whoopi Goldberg has a proposal to end the ongoing government shutdown — and it involves halting pay for those in power.

The EGOT-winning actress and moderator of *The View *made a public plea Wednesday from her post at the Hot Topics table, where she implored both sides of the political aisle to forego getting paid until the government shutdown comes to an end. Goldberg, 69, introduced the idea at the tail end of an opening show segment that saw the cohosts discussing a five-network stronghold against the controversial proposed Pentagon reporting rules.

"I want to make a suggestion, because you know, we're still in the middle of a shutdown," Goldberg said after her colleagues finished speaking about the Pentagon rules. She then addressed political opponents whose squabbling led to the ongoing shutdown.

"I would like Republicans and Democrats to come together and decide they're not going to take their salaries," the *Sister Act* and *Color Purple* star implored.

The studio audience cheered at Goldberg's suggestion, with several of her cohosts chiming in that they agreed with her proposal.

"Until this affects you the way it's affecting your constituents, y'all are not going to settle this," Goldberg said, stressing her point. "So, as an American, I am asking that you not take a salary until you settle this."

Goldberg finished the segment by telling the crowd that she thinks "lots of people might feel the same way," as the audience again applauded before the show went to a commercial break.

*The View* cohosts have consistently discussed the government shutdown, which has led to intense political bickering among Democrats and Republicans.

The panelists have even singled out Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a conservative they typically criticize, for being a voice of reason amid the debacle after she called for both sides to put their differences aside and come to a solution for the American people.

In a recent CNN interview, the conservative urged, "Let's take off our Democrat jerseys, let's take off our Republican jerseys, and we should do something responsible for the American people and fix this."

When reached for comment, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement to EW that she blamed the government shutdown on Democratic lawmakers, and accused them of "holding the American people hostage."
