On Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert hopped boroughs to stop by *Jimmy Kimmel Live*'s Brooklyn set, bringing with him the recorded moment of when he learned that the ABC late-night talk show had been suspended indefinitely.**
The *Late Show *host explained on the episode that he was in the middle of taping his own late-night episode on Sept. 17 and had missed the text Jimmy Kimmel had sent to him, Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, and John Oliver breaking the news. **
"I didn't get it from you," Colbert told Kimmel. "I was on stage. I just finished the show — it was a Wednesday night. We had a pretty good show. I was about to say, 'Goodnight! Join us tomorrow for Pete Barbutti and Adrienne Barbeau,' or whoever my guest was the next night, Victor Buono. And my executive producer comes over and he goes, 'Hey, I just got this text from Carrie. I think I'm right to show it to you.'"

And that is how Colbert found out about the situation — in real time while still "in front of the audience with my mic up," he recalled.**
*Jimmy Kimmel Live* then cut to a clip of the moment, in which Colbert gets handed a phone, reads what is on its screen, and silently kicks his feet up onto his table in surprise.
"Okay, uh, Jimmy Kimmel's show has been pulled indefinitely by ABC. Wow," he reads aloud, prompting loud boos from the audience. "Wow."**
Shooting up from his desk, he tells the crowd, "Wait, hold on one second. I'll be right back. I want to find out what this is about. I'll be right back."

While sitting down with Kimmel, Colbert explained that there's no signal in the historic Ed Sullivan Theater, where *The Late Show* is filmed, so he had no idea why Kimmel had been suspended.
"There was no rationale given, just that you had been yanked," he said, to which Kimmel replied, "You figured I did something stupid, right?"**
Bingo. "I generally assume that it's your fault," Colbert agreed as the audience laughed. "I know you well enough to do that. So I went backstage and then I was like, 'Oh, I can't really tell why this happened, so we'll talk about it tomorrow.' And then … the whole next night was just about you." **
Kimmel interjected to note that he appreciated Colbert speaking out about the situation.
"It was our pleasure. Even the other guy came back from *The Colbert Report*!" Colbert joked, referencing his reprisal of his conservative Comedy Central character on the episode. "He wanted to show up and say a few things!"

*Jimmy Kimmel Live *was eventually reinstated on Sept. 22, although local broadcast affiliates Nexstar and Sinclair chose to continue to preempt the show until Sept. 26. The show has since been restored to the airwaves across the country. **
And many are glad to see its return, including Colbert. "I'm so happy that your show is back on the air," he said, "We've known each other for over 20 years, but we've only really gotten to know each other well the last few years, and I just got to catch up on getting to know you because the more I get to know you, the more I admire you as a leader, I know you as a friend. And here's something I didn't know … that you're funny."
Kimmel thanked him for his candor. "Well, I hope you know how much I respect and love you also," he said. **
Kimmel also swapped seats with Colbert on Tuesday night, visiting* The Late Show, *on which he detailed how he learned about the suspension.**
"I'm on the phone with ABC executives, and they say, 'Listen, we wanna take the temperature down. We're concerned about what you're gonna say tonight. And we've decided that the best route is to take the show off the air,' Kimmel recalled, causing the audience to start booing.
"That's what I said!" Kimmel replied. "I started booing."**
