Sean Gunn honored the 25th anniversary of Gilmore Girls in a long Instagram post
The actor shared that for a long time, he thought of his role as Kirk as just a "side-gig" before his "bigger and better" career
Gunn explained why he decided to turn his back on Kirk "no more"
Sean Gunn's turn as Kirk on Gilmore Girls might be iconic to fans, but the actor has had a complicated relationship with the role.
Gunn, 51, opened up about his role on the show in a Sunday, Oct. 5, Instagram post celebrating the show's 25th anniversary. "25 years ago, I auditioned to play the 'DSL Installer' as a day player on a show I had never heard of," he began. "My agent at the time recommended I pass on the audition but I said, 'Let me read the scene and if the writing's good, I'll go.' Spoiler alert: the writing was very good and I got the job."
He wrote that creator Amy Sherman-Palladino "liked what I did and kept asking me back to fill in small roles as the town's jack-of-all-trades (jackass-of-all-trades?) That first year I thought the joke would wear thin and every show would be my last. But I stuck around."

That jack-of-all-trades became Kirk Gleason, a slightly awkward young man who lives in the show's town of Stars Hollow and ends up working jobs like hockey announcer, mail deliverer, video store clerk, pizza maker, photographer, dog walker and many more. Kirk even fell in love, coupling up with Lulu (Rini Bell) in season four.
Gunn continued, "Today I was in Guatemala City, and hundreds of people came to meet me, to cheer and take pictures, and tell me how much that little show has meant to them and their families. It's humbling to have people still enjoy my work, that it's still alive, that young people who weren't even alive when the reboot came out claim it as their favorite show."
Gunn said he's now "incredibly grateful" for the role, but his perspective about the part has to go through a transformation. "It always kind of felt like a side-gig when I was young and had my whole career ahead of me; I figured soon something bigger and better would replace it," he wrote.
"But now I understand what a gift it is to have walked side-by-side with Kirk all these years. I can no more turn my back on him than I can on myself. It was great fun to play him and I miss him," he said.

Gilmore Girls ran from 2000 to 2006, for seven seasons on the WB and then the CW. The cast included Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Yanic Truesdale, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann, Liza Weil, Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia and Matt Czuchry. The show's fan base continued to grow after the series ended thanks to syndication and streaming, and it returned for a four-part revival series, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, in 2016, which aired on Netflix.
Gunn said he was "so honored" to work "so often" with some of the show's veteran actors like Sally Struthers (who played Babette), Liz Torres (who played Miss Patty) and Michael Winters (who played Taylor Doose).
"I learned something from every actor on the show; there wasn't a weak link in the chain," he said. He also thanked Sherman-Palladino and her husband Dan Palladino. "The kind of guts and immense talent it took to be a young female creator muscling her unique vision to the screen is awe-inspiring. Her fierce dedication to her art is the reason the show has lasted and will continue to last for so long," he said.
Gunn concluded, "I'll shut up now. Thanks to all who love the show. We love you back. Happy 25th birthday Gilmore Girls." Alongside his caption, Gunn shared a photo from his first scene and a photo of his chair on set, near the show's iconic gazebo.
Since Gilmore Girls ended, Gunn, who is the brother of director James Gunn, has worked frequently with his brother, including in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, 2021's The Suicide Squad and in the 2024 series Creature Commandos. This August, he appeared in an episode of Peacemaker as Maxwell Lord.
James shared his support for his brother on Instagram, commenting on his post, "This is amazing."
