Eggar got her start in television, appearing on the show Rob Roy in 1961. She continued getting gigs on TV before venturing into film with 1963's Doctor in Distress.

Her big break came with landing her role in The Collector at just 25, something that the actress struggled with, she admitted in a 2014 interview for The Terror Trap. Playing Miranda Grey, an art student taken captive by a crazed man, played by Terence Stamp, was challenging despite the fact that she knew her costar.

"Terence was at [the London drama school] Webber Douglas with me. So we knew each other then. But for the sake of the movie, we never spoke throughout the whole film. He really was that character, both off camera and on," Eggar said.

"My biggest relationship on set was with William Wyler and [dialogue coach] Kathleen Freeman, a brilliant, brilliant woman who really got me through The Collector, because it was not … an easy film to make."

Eggar was also known for roles in Return from the Ashes (1965), Walk, Don't Run (1966), Doctor Doolittle (1967) andThe Molly Maguires (1970).

Of making Doctor Doolittle, Eggar raved, "I loved it. Absolutely LOVED it. It took a year to make and then I was pregnant again with my delicious daughter Jenna Louise. We filmed Dolittle in three different locations. I was able to spend the whole time with Anthony Newley, Herb Ross and Nora Kaye, who became godparents to my daughter."

"I danced and I sang. That was bliss. Even Rex Harrison. I got on terribly well with Rex. I mean, Rex could be a monster. He had a wicked, wicked sense of humour. He made me laugh on so many occasions. But he did have a notorious reputation for being cruel...and he WAS cruel, apparently, to a lot of people."

In the 1970s, Eggar balanced her time between raising her family and acting, enjoying roles on television in shows like Anna and the King (1972), Love Story (1973) and Baretta (1976) and in horror films including The Dead Are Alive (1972), A Name for Evil (1973), and The Uncanny (1977).

Eggar was also known for her voice work, from voicing M in the James Bond video game series to Hera in Hercules (1987).

The 90s brought another wave of success to Eggar, who appeared in films like Ragin' Cajun (1990), Dark Horse (1992), Inevitable Grace (1994), The Phantom (1996) and The Astronaut's Wife (1999).

Eggar is survived by her three sisters, daughter Jenna and her husband Brennan, producer son Nicolas Stern and his wife Mindy, and three grandchildren.
