A wild Richard Gere appeared during *Today*'s PopStart segment on Thursday morning, flustering a starstruck Savannah Guthrie.

The actor, 76, had been scheduled to appear to discuss *Wisdom of Happiness,* the Dalai Lama documentary that he executive produced, but charmed his way onto the couch alongside Guthrie and her fellow co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager, Dylan Dreyer, Craig Melvin, and Carson Daly prior to his interview.

"Hi, Richard Gere," a cheerful Guthrie said as Gere strolled into frame and introduced himself to those on the couch. "Sit down, we're doing PopStart. We're happy you're here."

"Remember when Craig was sweating earlier?" Daley noted. Now Guthrie was, her colleagues pointed out.**

"Yes. Is it getting hot in here?" Guthrie quipped.

Noting that Guthrie would be absent during his interview, Gere said, "You're leaving. I can't believe it."

"Well, I have to catch a flight," Guthrie said, sharing that she's set to return to her hometown of Tucson, Ariz., to work on a future *Today* segment.

Bush Hager asked Gere, "Did you come here for her? For Savannah?"**

"Yes," Gere said. "I thought, 'Well at least I'm going to come over and sit with her for a second before she leaves for Tucson.'"

Guthrie was actually able to stick around for Gere's interview due to a flight delay. "She stuck around just for you!" cohost Melvin quipped.**

Gere spoke about his documentary and even remembered the late Diane Keaton, who died on Oct. 11 at the age of 79 from pneumonia. The duo starred in two films together: 1977's *Looking for Mr. Goodbar *and 2023's romantic comedy *Maybe I Do.*

*Looking for Mr. Goodbar* was just the second film Gere had starred in early in his career. He said he and Keaton leaned on each other during that period. "That was a difficult film, this very kind of raw, sexual film," he recalled. "And she's pretty shy and skittish. And I was, too. That was my second film. And we kind of took care of each other, getting through these kind of challenging physical scenes with each other."

Gere added, "But I remember just how sweet and gentle she was and how real. And I think anyone who's ever worked with her is just like, 'This is a real person.'"
