Now that *Love Is Blind* season 9 star Kacie McIntosh broke her silence with * *about the confusing way she ended things with fiancé Patrick Suzuki in the first batch of episodes, Patrick is ready to tell his side of the story. And he says that he's not as "clueless" as he seemed on Netflix's reality dating series.

In a new interview with EW, Patrick says he was shocked to hear Kacie's claims that she intended to continue dating him when they got home to Denver. "It's pretty surprising because I think that's the saying, 'If she wanted to, she would,' right?" Patrick tells EW. "If you wanted to, you would."

Patrick and Kacie's relationship hit a confusing roadblock at the end of the first batch of episodes when Kacie decided she didn't want to go to Mexico with him after their awkward in-person reveal. Patrick met her in the hotel lobby for a baffling conversation where she claimed she didn't want to continue with the TV show, but kept kissing him, caressing his face, and straddling him to make out. Patrick walked away from that encounter believing they would continue to date off the show, but Kacie told producers on-camera that she knew she wouldn't "grow" an attraction to him.

"I was pretty confused when it all went down, and I didn't really know exactly what she was getting at," Patrick says. "I thought she was just trying to cut the cameras off and then get off screen and try to date afterwards, so at first I wasn't fully convinced that she was just not attracted to me. I thought she was attracted to me. And then it wasn't until getting back home to Denver, it was like it made sense that she clearly — well, actually not clearly, I think she still was attracted to me, but she just was like, 'I don't care to pursue it anymore.'"

At the time, Patrick didn't consider their weird hotel conversation to be a breakup. But he knew something was off.

"My intuition did rise a little bit as far as like, 'Why is she cutting this off?' It was just the weirdest experience," he says. "Because you could feel her being like, 'Oh my gosh, I'm attracted to you, but I'm not wanting to go with this process anymore. I'm attracted to you, but I don't think you're someone I can marry.' It's almost like I could feel that during the interaction at the hotel, that's what made it more confusing."

While he didn't understand what Kacie's intentions were in the moment, he says that watching that scene back has "totally cleared up all the questions" he had — especially seeing the "background footage" of her "saying to producers, 'I don't think I could build an attraction for him.'"

"I was portrayed as I was super naive, but I just wanted to kind of protect her and try to guide her into being like, 'It's okay to tell me that this is not going to work for you,'" Patrick adds. "Rather than me being naive. Of course, I'm feeling the pullback, but I feel like it was more like a gentle like, 'Hey, let me know. It's okay. Don't worry. Are you breaking up with me? It's okay.' That's really how it went down rather than me being clueless."

Patrick had a difficult time seeing how Kacie was more honest with the producers than she was with him in the actual moment.

"I definitely wish that she was a little more honest [with me]," he says. "But I heard her perspective today and her perspective does make sense. She knew my insecurities. I was a little insecure there, so I could see how she wanted a more gentle approach to it."

He also knows that viewers want it to be a simple "yes or no" explanation of whether Kacie was attracted to him. But he thinks it goes much deeper than that.

"In reality she's probably attracted to me but just doesn't want to be with me," Patrick says. "And I think that's more common in dating than people even really realize too. I just didn't think I checked all the boxes that she needed."

Patrick is grateful for the lessons he's learned from this entire experience with Kacie, despite how it might seem.

"I should have just trusted my intuition more as far as what was happening rather than being emotionally charged," he says. "But I think I was pretty upset and hurt at the time that I wasn't really thinking very clearly. Watching it back now, yeah, that's definitely what my intuition was telling me and I wish I could have just taken a step back. But it was such a confusing ending. Personally, it was a hard, hard ending. It was hard to try to decipher what had happened and even try to manage your emotions after that."
