The cute calendar, which features rescue dogs in couture hats, will raise money for the U.K.-based dog rescue charity Underdog International
A royal milliner is saving rescue dogs, one stylish calendar at a time.
Awon Golding has created hats for Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, but once a year, she gets to dress rescue dogs in designer hats in a charity initiative she founded seven years ago.
"Making hats for rescue dogs never gets old! As fun and frivolous as it might seem, I know we are making a real impact, and I absolutely love it," Golding says. "Plus a little humor and lightness is just what the world needs right now."
The Haute Dogs Calendar — which features 12 rescue dogs all styled in fabulous hats by world-class milliners, including favorites of the royal family such as Justine Bradley-Hill and Golding herself — is now in its eighth year. This year, the project is supporting Underdog International.

"Underdog International is unique because of how they help dogs and children. Nadine, the founder, is very passionate about education, which is so important," Golding tells PEOPLE from her studio in East London, where she creates her whimsical and much sought-after designs. "To make a big change in the dog rescue community and in general in the world, you have to educate people, and that's what so special about this charity."

Guided by their motto, "Children helping dogs, dogs helping children," the U.K.-based charity is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs and finding them loving homes. Through their global education program, they also connect rescue dogs with children to act as therapy dogs for young people who might find school overwhelming or have special educational needs.
For the Hong Kong-born milliner, who set up her own eponymous millinery business in 2013 before joining Lock & Co. as head milliner in 2018, the calendar was an idea that started in the studio when she found herself trying hats on her own rescue dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Stevie.

"It started out as a personal way of giving back and turned into something much bigger!" she says.
Since the very first calendar, the milliner has raised over $160,500 for dog charities worldwide and saved hundreds of dogs from abuse and neglect.
"Having a little calendar on the wall that has a really beautiful story behind it, with a dog wearing a hat — it puts a smile on people's faces, and I really love that," she says.
For the children they support, the impact can be so much more.
"There was a 6-year-old girl who had chosen not to speak for years; she was so traumatized by the things she had experienced in her life," Golding explains. "The charity started her on a therapy dog course and one day, whilst working with her dog, Mack, she spoke for the first time in years."

The calendar, which is printed on carbon offset paper with vegetable inks, features a different rescue dog each month, each with their own survival story and wearing their own fabulous fascinator.
The calendar can be shipped globally (although orders must be placed by December 7 for delivery in the U.S.) and costs approximately $20.
