A woman took to Costco's Reddit forum to complain that a bodega was allegedly selling Costco cake slices for a marked-up price

Users poked fun at the original poster, writing that she didn't understand the retailer's wholesale model

One Redditor wrote that they worked at Costco and were "shocked" at how many members didn't know about the company's bulk items

A Reddit user claimed a deli is selling Costco desserts, but other users had a different bone to pick.

The poster shared a photo of packaged cake slices in the Costco forum and wrote, "You can't fool me, local bodega selling the tuxedo cake with a ridiculous markup!" The chocolate slices were listed as "Tuxed Chocolate Mousse Cake" and marked as $5.29 in the now-viral post from Aug. 22.

Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Chocolate Mousse Cake is a 12-serving, rectangular chocolate cake with layers of two types of chocolate mousse, brownie pieces and chocolate ganache. The top of the cake is decorated with a chocolate pattern and chocolate curls. It retails for $21.55.

Costco did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request to verify that the photographed slices were Kirkland Signature Tuxedo Chocolate Mousse Cake.

The post, which had almost 8,000 likes at the time of this story's publication, received hundreds of comments, but they didn't focus on the allegation of the cake's origin. Instead, Redditors joked about the original poster taking issue with (or being unaware of) the retailer's wholesale model.

"This is ridiculous," one person commented. "Costco might as well just rename their stores to Costco Wholesale at this point. Absurd."

Another user used a similarly sarcastic tone in their comment, writing, "Wow its almost like that was Costcos entire business model."

One commenter explained that they've encountered other people unaware of Costco's bulk warehouse operations.

"I've worked at Costco for 19 years. I use to be shocked by the number of people who complained about the size of bulk items," the user wrote. "It seems that a large percentage of Costco members, don't realize that wholesalers sell bulk items to retailers, who then break the items down and sell them for retail prices."

Costco has two varieties of stores: Costco Wholesale and Costco Business Centers. Both types require a membership (which is available at several levels with different perks and annual fees), but the former is more catered to individual consumers, according to the Costco website. Meanwhile, the latter carries a wider selection of products and sizes specifically for food services, offices and convenience stores, per the Costco Business Center website.
