*Scream*. *The Craft*.* I Know What You Did Last Summer*. The '90s were a golden age for teen horror, but with so many of them pumped out, deep cuts like *The Faculty* got overlooked along the way.
A box-office disappointment at the time, Robert Rodriguez's 1998 sci-fi horror flick — about high school students going up against their murderous, alien-possessed teachers — has since rallied a cult following for its pulpy genre-bending and loving nods to classics like *Invasion of the Body Snatchers *(1956) and *The Thing *(1982).
It also had an ensemble loaded with up-and-coming actors who would soon become household names, including a pre-*Lord of the Rings* Elijah Wood, a *Fast and the Furious*-bound Jordana Brewster, and more.
Now, with a remake officially on the way — produced by Rodriguez and penned by *Companion* (2025) director Drew Hancock — a new generation of viewers might just get assimilated into its fanbase. So, before the next bell rings at Herrington High, catch up with the original cast of *The Faculty.*
Josh Hartnett (Zeke Tyler)

Zeke is *The Faculty*'s ultimate bad boy. He sells crushed caffeine pills to other students in the bathroom, drives a loud sports car, and couldn't care less about his schoolwork. But once he discovers the town is in danger, he quickly becomes the hero. Zeke is portrayed by Josh Hartnett, who — just a few months earlier — made a big splash in *Halloween H20: 20 Years Later*.
"*Halloween H20* was the first film that I made, but I was cast first for *The Faculty*.... Met Robert Rodriguez, hadn't read the script, and he cast me on the spot essentially for Zeke," Hartnett told *Vanity Fair* in July 2024. "Many years afterward, I was like, 'Why? What'd you see in me? Like, I didn't know what I was doing.' He was like, 'It's precisely because you didn't know what you were doing. You were like too cool to have read the script that I thought you'd be perfect for Zeke.'"
After *The Faculty*, Hartnett landed lead parts in big-budget films like *Black Hawk Down* (2001), *Pearl Harbor* (2001), and *Sin City* (2005). He later had a three-season stint on the acclaimed Showtime series *Penny Dreadful*. In the 2020s, the actor experienced a career resurgence with appearances in Guy Ritchie's *Wrath of Man* (2021); Christopher Nolan's *Oppenheimer *(2023), for which he won a Screen Actors Guild Award; M. Night Shyamalan's *Trap* (2024); and episodes of *Black Mirror* and *The Bear*. Hartnett is set to star opposite Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's *Verity*.
In 2021, Hartnett married actress Tamsin Egerton after nearly a decade of dating. Together, they share four children.
Jordana Brewster (Delilah Profitt)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/jordana-brewster-the-faculty-watn-070925-5d95f93de0894776be5f35d14c40a83f.jpg)

Jordana Brewster is both brains and beauty as Delilah, the editor of the school's newspaper and the head cheerleader (but her popularity means nothing if aliens overtake the human race). While *The Faculty* was Brewster's feature film debut, she had every reason to think the project would be a major hit, but she quickly learned how unpredictable Hollywood can be.
"With *The Faculty*, it was like, 'You guys, this is gonna be huge. Look at all these successes around us,' like *She's All That* and *Scream*. And it was also Dimension, which was doing really well, that studio. And then Tommy Hilfiger was doing our campaign! So we all thought it was gonna be huge," she said during a June 2021 appearance on *Collider Ladies Night*. "And then it turned out it wasn't so huge. We thought it was gonna be massive, I think it was a Christmas opening, and then not so big. So it was a good lesson. But it was a cult classic, so that's really cool."
After *The Faculty*, Brewster went on to star as Mia in *The Fast and the Furious* franchise, with other film appearances in *Cellar Door* (2024), *Heart Eyes* (2025), and more. Brewster also had lead stints on the *Dallas* reboot and the TV adaptation of *Lethal Weapon*.
Brewster was married to horror producer Andrew Form, whom she met while filming *The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning* in 2006. The couple welcomed two sons before they split in 2021. She is now married to ValueAct Capital CEO Mason Morfit.
Clea DuVall (Stokely Mitchell)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/clea-duvall-the-faculty-watn-070925-48626020904d4255a9c893061a970de3.jpg)

Brooding, angsty, a bit goth, and incredibly smart, Stokely embodies '90s grunge and Hot Topic emo. Clea DuVall plays the role and gives a performance that feels surprisingly relatable to many viewers.
Since her days fighting off aliens, DuVall has taken on a multitude of projects, including acting in *Girl, Interrupted* (1999) and the queer classic *But I'm a Cheerleader* (1999).
She had supporting roles in the Oscar-winning film *Argo* (2012) and on the comedy series *Veep*. In 2015, DuVall decided to try her hand behind the camera, writing, directing, and producing *The Intervention*. She followed that up with the LGBTQ+ holiday rom-com* Happiest Season *(2020), which starred Kristen Stewart.
DuVall voiced Elsa on the animated Fox comedy *HouseBroken *(a series that she also helped create) from 2021 to 2023, and there has even been talk of a *Happiest Season* sequel.
DuVall came out as a lesbian in 2016 and revealed in 2020 that she's "a happily married woman."
Laura Harris (Marybeth Louise Hutchinson)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/laura-harris-the-faculty-watn-070925-54c3814920c84f72944f5242d64c1a29.jpg)

A southern belle or an alien monster? Laura Harris plays Marybeth, the new girl in town…who turns out to be the queen alien intent on taking over the human race.
After morphing into a giant monster in *The Faculty*, Harris starred on Bryan Fuller's Showtime dramedy about grim reapers, *Dead Like Me*, taking over for Rebecca Gayheart. Harris also had a recurring role on *24*, and appeared on *Women's Murder Club, Defying Gravity, *and Netflix's *Scaredy Cats.*
Elijah Wood (Casey Connor)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/elijah-wood-the-faculty-watn-070925-3f6591cd7736465cba661d0fd8a022cd.jpg)

Elijah Wood was already an established child star well before portraying the shy and slightly nerdy Casey, a photographer for the school newspaper who is the first to realize something is wrong. Wood's early work included *Avalon* (1990), *Radio Flyer* (1992), *The Adventures of Huck Finn* (1993), and* The Good Son* (1993).
But his career *really* exploded a couple of years later, thanks to his starring role as Frodo in *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy. He also voiced the character in multiple *LOTR* video games and later reprised his role in 2012's *The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey*.
In 2011, he made the leap to television, starring on the bizarre and meta FX series *Wilfred.* Wood is also a massive horror fan and in recent years he's spent his time behind the camera, serving as a producer for numerous indie horror hits like *Mandy* (2018), *Daniel Isn't Real* (2019), and *Rabbit Trap* (2025). He's also acted in films like *The Toxic Avenger* (2023) and *The Monkey* (2025), as well as episodes of *The Afterparty* and *Yellowjackets*.
Wood is married to film producer Mette-Marie Kongsved, with whom he shares a son (born in 2019) and a daughter (born in 2022).

Shawn Hatosy's* *character, Stan, is a football player who secretly wanted off the team. Luckily, he quits just in time, before the entire team is infected by the alien parasite.
In the years following *The Faculty*'s release, Hatosy had appearances in films like *John Q* (2002), *The Cooler* (2003),* Alpha Dog* (2006), and *Unstoppable* (2024)*.* After making the move to television, Hatosy's career found steady ground with significant roles as Sammy Bryant on *Southland*, Andrew "Pope" Cody on *Animal Kingdom*, and Dr. Jack Abbot on *The Pitt* (for which he received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series). He is set to reunite on screen with his *Faculty* costar Elijah Wood in *Ready or Not: Here I Come, *the long-awaited sequel to the horror comedy *Ready or Not* (2019).
In 2010, Hatosy married actress Kelly Albanese. Together, they have three sons.
Salma Hayek (Nurse Harper)

Before portraying the totally-over-it Nurse Harper in *The Faculty*, Salma Hayek was already a Hollywood darling thanks to her work in *Desperado* (1995) and *From Dusk Till Dawn* (1996), both of which were also helmed by *The Faculty*'s director, Robert Rodriguez. After becoming good friends with Rodriguez during their time working together, Hayek signed on for *The Faculty*, but that doesn't mean she watched the finished product.
"I hate horror films, and I don't watch them," she told Yahoo Entertainment in April 2017. "It was tough for me to do [*The Faculty*] because of that. I don't understand them very well. It's a genre that I just don't get into. I've never watched it, I don't even remember it. Somebody kills me, I know. I remember it was awful."
Hayek maintained her A-list status over the years, being nominated for an Oscar for her role as Frida Kahlo in *Frida* (2002) and starring in hits like *Once Upon a Time in Mexico* (2003). Hayek has also appeared in *Eternals* (2021), *House of Gucci* (2021), *Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard *(2021), and lent her voice to Kitty Softpaws in the *Puss in Boots* franchise (2011, 2022). In 2023, she acted opposite Channing Tatum in *Magic Mike's Last Dance *and* *Annie Murphy in the *Black Mirror* episode "Joan Is Awful."
In 2007, Hayek married French billionaire and Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault. They welcomed their daughter, Valentina, two years later.
Jon Stewart (Edward Furlong)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/jon-stewart-the-faculty-watn-070925-4424c683cc9847f898d5ba5e23611641.jpg)

One of the most memorable scenes in *The Faculty* is when the students realize the alien parasite needs water to survive. They figure this out with the help of their science teacher, Mr. Furlong, played by Jon Stewart.
The year after appearing in *The Faculty*, Stewart took over hosting duties on *The Daily Show*, turning the series into a massive, Emmy-winning success. He remained the show's host until 2015, offering a satirical take on pivotal events like 9/11, Obama's presidential victory, and the legalization of same-sex marriage. He has also dipped his toe into directing, helming the films *Rosewater* (2014) and *Irresistible* (2020).
In late 2021, Stewart returned to host a new topical series on Apple TV+, *The Problem With Jon Stewart*. Stewart has also become a huge advocate for New Yorkers who were exposed to deadly toxins during the 9/11 attacks, and even spoke before Congress in 2019 to urge the passing of a bill that would provide aid to victims. In 2024, he returned to *The Daily Show* as the weekly Monday guest host.
Stewart has been married to animal rights activist Tracey Stewart (née McShane) since 2000. They have two kids.
Famke Janssen (Miss Burke)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/famke-janssen-the-faculty-watn-070925-5ee1d88e0c1b4792afacd455da70a433.jpg)

Famke Janssen is Miss Burke, the school's shy, pushover English teacher who students regularly mock and ignore. After being infected, however, she turns into a badass femme fatale, hellbent on infecting every student at the school.
Already a professional model and a "Bond girl" before making *The Faculty*, Janssen went on to score the biggest role of her career, portraying Jean Grey in the *X-Men* franchise (2000, 2003, 2006, 2013, 2014). Janssen also starred in the *Taken* movies (2008, 2012, 2014) and held numerous starring and recurring parts on television series like *Nip/Tuck*, *Hemlock Grove*, *How to Get Away With Murder*, *The Blacklist: Redemption,* and *Long Slow Exhale*. Her most recent credits include *Boy Kills World* (2023), *Locked In* (2023), and the upcoming Netflix series *Amsterdam Empire, *set to premiere in October 2025.
Usher (Gabe)

Usher had a small part in* The Faculty*, playing Gabe, one of the football players who gets infected early on in the film. Though he was barely in the movie, Usher was prominently featured on the poster, VHS/DVD cover, and promotional materials, because his multi-platinum album, *My Way*, had just been released and he had become one of the biggest names in R&B.
In the years since, Usher has continually released hit albums and, in 2006, he even starred as Billy Flynn in *Chicago* on Broadway. His onscreen work didn't stop with *The Faculty*, appearing in *She's All That* (1999),* Light It Up* (1999), *Scary Movie 5* (2013), *Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping* (2016),* *and* Hustlers *(2019).* *He also had a stint as a coach on *The Voice* from 2013 to 2014.
In 2024, Usher headlined the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show; released his ninth studio album, *Coming Home*; kicked off his Past Present Future tour (which had its last show in May 2025); and married music executive Jennifer Goicoechea, whom he had been dating since 2019.
The father of four has two children with Goicoechea, and two with his ex-wife Tameka Foster.
Robert Patrick (Coach Willis)
:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/robert-patrick-the-faculty-watn-070925-6ff19f40382f4f40bc6608a565e3156d.jpg)

Robert Patrick — who was then best known for the role of T-1000 in *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* (1991) — is Coach Willis, the aggressive and dominant instructor of the football team who becomes Marybeth's perfect target to ensure ultimate control of the school.
After *The Faculty*, Patrick joined final seasons of the original run of *The X-Files* when David Duchovny left —as Scully's new partner, Agent John Doggett — and went on to star on numerous TV series throughout his career, including *The Unit,* *Scorpion*, *Peacemaker*, *1923*, *The Night Agent*, and *Reacher*.
Patrick married actress Barbara Hooper in 1990. Together, they have two children.
Piper Laurie (Mrs. Olson)

Piper Laurie played Mrs. Olsen, the school's drama teacher. In the pre-opening credits teaser scene, she's the second member of the faculty to be taken over by aliens and stabs Principal Drake (Bebe Neuwirth) to death before inserting the parasite into her.
Going into *The Faculty*, the actress had already been nominated for three Oscars for her work in *The Hustler* (1961), *Carrie* (1976), and* Children of a Lesser God* (1986), and had won an Emmy and a Golden Globe. She also costarred as Catherine Martell on *Twin Peaks*.
After *The Faculty*, Laurie appeared in various guest roles on TV shows, even reuniting with costar Laura Harris in an episode of *Dead Like Me*. Laurie appeared in *Hesher *(2010) starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and *White Boy Rick* (2018) starring Matthew McConaughey.
Laurie died at age 91 on Oct. 14, 2023. She is survived by daughter Anne Grace Morgenstern, whom she shared with her ex-husband, film critic Joe Morgenstern.

Principal Drake has a lot on her plate in *The Faculty*, from juggling a nonexistent school budget to drugs in the classroom, and a school board that refuses to help. One night, while staying late to finish up work, she's attacked, becoming the third member of the faculty to get infected. Principal Drake was portrayed by the Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Bebe Neuwirth, who was already a famous face thanks to her time on stage and her prominent role as Dr. Lilith Sternin on the sitcoms *Cheers* and *Frasier*.
After the movie, Neuwirth returned to Broadway, starring in shows like *Chicago*, *Fosse*, *The Addams Family*, and *Cabaret*. In 2021, Neuwirth joined other Broadway legends in the Netflix musical *Tick, Tick... Boom!*, which was based on the life of Jonathan Larson, the playwright-composer-lyricist who wrote *Rent*. She was in the main cast on HBO Max's *Julia* and reprised her role as Lilith on the 2023 *Frasier* revival.
In 2009, Neuwirth married director and writer Chris Calkins.
