The crash happened in British Columbia, Canada, according to the team
"We are all heartbroken," Americans head coach Steve Martinson said in a statement as tributes came in across the hockey community on Monday
The hockey community is mourning the loss of Orca Wiesblatt, a minor league hockey player whose team announced he was killed in a car crash over the weekend in British Columbia, Canada.
Wiesblatt was 25 years old.
"We are all heartbroken," Allen Americans head coach and general manager Steve Martinson said in a statement released by Wiesblatt's ECHL team on Monday, Sept. 15.
"Orca was really looking forward to this next step in his hockey career," Martinson's statement added. "He wasn't just skilled, he was a momentum-changing hitter. I can still see his grin when he would return to the bench after one of his big hits. That is what we will miss the most, his infectious smile."
Wiesblatt was coming off his first full season as a professional hockey player and was set to make his debut with the Allen Americans next month when the 2025-26 ECHL season begins.

The Calgary, Alberta native had an exceptional pro debut last season with the Athens Rock Lobsters, scoring 42 points in just 37 games. Wiesblatt's former team also shared the news of his death with a memorial post on social media and wrote its organization was "heartbroken."
"Orca will always be remembered for his energy, toughness, and infectious smile," his former team said, adding, "Once a Rock Lobster, forever a Rock Lobster."
Before his pro career began in 2024, Wiesblatt played four seasons of junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League in Canada. Wiesblatt's hometown junior hockey team called his death "tragic" in their own statement on social media, which noted his former teammates and coaches were filled with "great sadness" after hearing the news.
"We are heartbroken for his family, friends, and everyone that knew and loved him," the Hitmen wrote on social media. "On behalf of the ownership, management, coaches, players, and staff of Calgary Sports and Entertainment, we extend our deepest heartfelt sympathies during this very difficult time. You are in our thoughts and prayers."

The Allen Americans, who said they signed Wiesblatt to a pro contract just last month, announced the team will plan to pay tribute to the 25-year-old forward during its first game of the season on Oct. 24.
Wiesblatt has three brothers — Ozzy, Ocean, and Oazis — who all grew up playing hockey in the Calgary area and went on to successfully have either junior or pro hockey careers, according to Sportsnet and The Calgary Herald.
Ocean also played for the Athens Rock Lobsters in the Federal Prospects Hockey League last season before finishing the year with the Danville Dashers. Oazis Wiesblatt currently plays for the Milwaukee Admirals in the American Hockey League, and Ozzy Wiesblatt was selected in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators and made his NHL debut with the team last season.
