The former Division II football player said his fall was a "tragic accident"

The Pittsburgh Pirates fan who was seriously injured after he fell more than 20 feet from the outfield bleachers during a game in April is revisiting the moment when it all happened.

"I don't know how I'm alive," Kavan Markwood told Inside Edition. "I wake up with pain every day. My arm, I can't feel my two fingers still. [But] I'm doing better than what I was, that's for sure."

In a video of the incident that went viral, Markwood was seen reacting to a Pirates home run.

As he jumped up and down in celebration, he lost his balance and somersaulted over the railing, landing 21 feet below on the warning track.

The former Division II football player suffered a broken back and neck, a punctured lung, and he broke every rib, according to Inside Edition.

"Yeah, that was bad," he said, while watching a replay of his fall.

Markwood, who was 20 at the time, recalled to the program that his friend Ethan Kirkwood bought him beer on the evening of April 30 at PNC Park — but that they did not contribute to his accident.

Markwood's girlfriend Alonna Brown, who was also at the game, told authorities at the time that he drank two beers that night, according to ABC News.

According to court documents obtained and reviewed by PEOPLE, Kirkwood was charged with two misdemeanor counts of furnishing liquor to a minor.

Authorities claimed security video showed Kirkwood purchasing two 24-ounce cans of beer around the start of the Pirates game, according to ABC and CBS, and additional footage shows both Kirkwood and Markwood holding the beers during the game.

Kirkwood was also seen on surveillance video returning to the bar at PNC Park to purchase two more beers before Markwood's fall onto the field.

Still, as Markwood continues to recover, he wants people to know one thing.

"I just hope everyone knows that I fell and I didn't jump over the railing," Markwood said. "It was just a tragic accident."
