It didn't take long for the 2025-26 NFL season to produce a bad beat for bettors.
The Philadelphia Eagles closed as 8-point home favorites against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night at BetMGM and the Cowboys covered the spread the entire game in a 24-20 loss.
But bettors who had an over ticket will be wondering for a while just how this game stayed under a total of 47.5 that looked to be a dead over in the first half.
Eagles defensive end Jalen Carter was ejected from the game before the first snap for spitting on Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, which helped open things up for the Dallas offense to thrive in the first half. Both teams scored on every possession in the first half and the Eagles led 21-20 at halftime.
Philadelphia converted a 58-yard field goal from Eagles kicker Jake Elliot on its first second-half possession to make it 24-20 with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter. And Dallas drove the ball all the way to the Eagles' 11-yard line on its next drive, before losing a fumble on first-and-10.
After the fumble, lightning in the area caused a delay of roughly an hour — and the teams didn't score again. Somehow, the game stayed under the total of 47.5, with no scoring in the last 23-plus minutes of game time.
Just how rare was this?
According to Evan Abrams of The Action Network, in NFL games with 40-plus points scored in the first half and a total of under 50, the over was 172-1 in the last 20 years. Make that 172-2 after Thursday night's game.
That stat will be little consolation to those bettors holding over tickets that seemed destined to cash.
