Jason Collins the former NBA player who became the first active male athlete in a major U.S. team sport to come out as gay, is battling a brain tumor.
"NBA Ambassador and 13-year NBA veteran Jason Collins is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumor," the NBA said in a statement released Thursday, September 11. "Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason's health and well-being."
Collins, 46, played 13 seasons from 2001-14 for the Nets, Hawks, Celtics, Grizzlies, Timberwolves and Wizards. He averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds across 735 games in his career.
The Nets, the team where Collins spent the bulk of his career, posted a message on social media offering support for Collins.
"Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family ❤️" the message read.
The NBA's official account also shared a message in support of Collins.

Collins announced his groundbreaking coming out in April 2013 in a first-person essay for Sports Illustrated, when he was 34 years old.
