Jennifer Lopez told CBS' 'Sunday Morning' that she wore a 50-lb. gold dress for her role in the upcoming movie musical Kiss of the Spider Woman

The star admitted she was initially concerned about her costume being "so heavy"

Lopez also opened up about working with costume designer Colleen Atwood, calling it a "great collaboration"

Jennifer Lopez carried the weight of her role in Kiss of the Spider Woman — literally.

In an interview with CBS' Sunday Morning, aired on Sunday, Sept. 28, the 56-year-old actress told host Lee Cowan about the process of filming the upcoming movie musical. When discussing the costumes designed by Colleen Atwood, Lopez said that one piece in particular was a "nightmare" to shoot dance sequences in.

"The gold dress was 50 pounds," she says of a beaded gown she wears in the film. "It was so heavy. When they would lift me up, and I would try to move my leg and do the attitude. It was a nightmare."

However, Lopez admitted that "it worked" thanks to Atwood's expertise and foresight.

"The way the dress moved and the lines of the dress," she continued. "[Atwood] really is a master at that, and it was perfect. We'd see it on the monitor and I was like, 'I didn't even realize the costume would be that good.'"

Lopez described working with Atwood as a "great collaboration," saying that the costume designer's vision helped her develop her character.

"She was very specific about each moment in the movie... she let me pick shapes and let me input on colors and things like that, but she was very specific and it really helped me," the "Love Don't Cost a Thing" singer explained. "I loved it, actually."

She continued: "I'm very into fashion, I always have been. I'm very into clothes and how my characters are going to look, and when she was so specific about it, it put me right into an idea right away, instead of me trying to craft it, find it. It was like, 'This is what this is going to be,' and I go, 'Oh, okay. I know who I am in that moment.'" — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lopez opened up about having to prove herself as an actress when others only saw her as a dancer or singer.

"People, when they see you first as one thing, it's hard for them to see you as something else. You just have to show them. You can't let that discourage you," she explained.

When Cowan asked, "Did you struggle to be taken seriously at first?" Lopez responded with a laugh: "At first? At first — and maybe always.

"A little bit. Or maybe it's just me in my own head," she added. "I don't know. I've always felt a bit of the underdog. Definitely misunderstood. But it comes with the territory of being in the public eye. People are not gonna really know who you are, your heart. And then they see it and go, 'Oh, that's who she is,' then they hear something and they go, 'Oh, no, that's not who she is.' And they get confused. I get it. I understand."

"But I stay steady," said Lopez. "And that's the most important thing, I think. I don't change. I grow, but I don't change."

Kiss of the Spider Woman will be in theaters Oct. 10 after making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January. Lopez stars alongside Diego Luna and Tonatiuh as a "silver screen diva" named Aurora, a.k.a. Ingrid Luna.
