Jason Aldean says he hasn't been able to smell well for at least a decade. The country music superstar, 48, recently appeared on Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard, where he discussed various topics, including his reasons for putting off surgery to clear his nasal passages.
"It just doesn't sound like fun," Aldean said of the medical procedure that's looming over him.
When asked if there was an incident that caused him to have the reduced ability to smell, Aldean answered: "No. It's just nasal polyps. I'm supposed to be having surgery on this, but it hasn't happened yet."
"It's also just time," he noted before reiterating his hesitation to move forward with the operation. "I just don't wanna — they're like, 'Yeah. It's gonna feel like you have the worst flu for like two weeks.' I'm like, 'That doesn't sound like something I want to jump on. It just doesn't sound like fun, so I just haven't had it done yet."
Will Surgery Change His Vocals?
When asked if he's afraid the surgery would affect his voice, Aldean replied, "A little bit. I know it's going to probably sound different."
Aldean shouldn't worry too much about nasal polyp removal surgery when it comes to a potential change in his voice, as he has a loyal fan base who likely won't change their opinions on him. In addition to that, the "You Make It Easy" singer has a long list of accolades, including 30 No. 1 hits and 20 million albums sold, proving that a minor change won't impact his talent.
Jason Aldean Named 2 Country Singers Who He Believes Have the Best Voices in the Genre
While it's no question that Aldean is worthy of winning awards solely based on his vocals in country music, he divulged some of his favorite vocalists in the genre.
"[Chris Stapleton] is the best male vocalist in our genre, to me right now," Aldean told actor Dax Shepard. "I think he and Morgan Wallen are killing it, too. Morgan's a great vocalist, too."
"Morgan's just kind of on a global level now," Aldean continued. "That's awesome, too, that we get a guy like that — really brings in a lot of different listeners into our format. He's getting people listening to his stuff that wouldn't typically listen to country music. Those kinds of things, it's all good for all of us."

"I think I'm better at it now," he said of his songwriting in comparison to the tunes he released earlier in his career. "I think there are certain songs and subject matter that don't make sense for me to sing anymore… Now it's like you're having songs with a little more meat on the bone and things that are going to make sense for me to sing when I'm in my 50s and moving forward…."
"Now we're writing songs about things like family members going through things like dementia and those kinds of things," Aldean added. "Just things that are a little more thoughtful and in that direction. I'm still having the things that people expect from us on a record, too. So it's just kind of like a weird new era for us, I think."
