Death, taxes, San Francisco 49ers injuries.
It's only been one week into the 2025 NFL regular season and the injury bug has taken a major chunk out of the San Francisco 49ers. Brock Purdy, George Kittle and Jauan Jennings were all banged up in the team's Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks – leaving a wounded group to battle the New Orleans Saints in Week 2.
Kittle already landed on injured reserve. Now it's Purdy that appears set for an extended stay on the sidelines.
Injuries have been a theme in San Francisco, seemingly a continued problem every year for Kyle Shanahan's bunch. Given their high hopes for a season that extends well into January and February, the Super Bowl hopefuls now have to deal with quite the detour.
Here's what to know about Purdy and when he could return to game action.
How long is Brock Purdy out?
Purdy is expected to be sidelined for two-to-five weeks with a turf toe injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
It's unclear how the injury will react, so the expectations are that Mac Jones should start at least two games. If that remains the case, Purdy would be slated to return for the 49ers' Week 4 contest at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Jones would then get the starting nod against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
Brock Purdy injury update
Purdy is dealing with what Rapoport called a, "turf toe variant."
Shanahan said Wednesday that the quarterback was considered to be a long shot to play on Sunday in Week 2 against the Saints.
"I think it's a long shot," Shanahan told reporters.
While the toe injury will sideline Purdy, that wasn't the only ailment that came out of the Week 1 contest. Purdy also suffered a shoulder injury in the process.
He went on to complete 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the San Francisco win.
49ers QB depth chart
Like most teams, the 49ers don't possess a lot of depth behind their starting quarterback. Here's a look at what they're working with:
Brock Purdy (injured)
Mac Jones
Kurtis Rourke (injured)
Adrian Martinez (practice squad)
They don't have to panic yet, however. While Jones is on his third team in five seasons, he does come with plenty of starting experience. The former New England Patriots quarterback has started 49 games in four seasons, meaning the 49ers can potentially rely on that until Purdy returns.
It gets dicey if the backup suffers an injury though.
Rourke is out for the first four games of the season after landing on the non-football injury (NFI) list and Martinez is currently on the practice squad.
San Francisco could look to the open market if necessary, but the team will hope it doesn't get to that point.
