Graham Greene, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Kicking Bird in 1990's Dances with Wolves, has died. He was 73.
Greene reportedly died in a hospital in Toronto on Sept. 1 after dealing with an extended illness. His agent, Michael Greene, confirmed his death in a statement to Deadline, saying, "He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed."
His agent went on, "You are finally free. Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven," in reference to Greene's previous agent who died in 2013.
Greene Was a Canadian First Nations Actor Who Was a Pioneer in the Industry
Greene was from the Oneida tribe, born on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada, on June 22, 1952. While he didn't start his working life in acting or the arts, others encouraged Greene to pursue acting, and by the 1970s, he was performing in professional theater.

His first professional job, according to an interview Greene had with Playback's Canadian Film & TV Hall of Fame in 2012, was a theatre workshop in London, England. But soon enough, Greene made the jump to the big screen, booking quite a few roles throughout the 1980s.
Greene's star-turning role was Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves. The actor starred alongside Kevin Costner, Mary McDonnell, Rodney A. Grant and more, and he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance.
Greene went on to have a prolific career in the entertainment industry, with just a few of his impressive projects including The Green Mile, Longmire, Defiance, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and Echo. He starred in a handful of projects in 2025, and the late actor has a few upcoming roles for fans to look out for in the future.
Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, whom he married in 1990, and their children.
