One of the most beloved sitcoms of the 1980s actually began as a spin-off from another hit show — and if you're a fan of classic TV, this connection might surprise you.

The Facts of Life, which premiered on August 24, 1979, was born from the popular NBC seriesDiff'rent Strokes. But the link between these two iconic shows runs deeper than just a shared network or time slot.

It all started with Charlotte Rae, who played the lovable "Edna Garrett," the Drummond family's housekeeper on Diff'rent Strokes. When producers saw the potential for Rae to carry her own show, they crafted a seamless transition that would change television history.

The groundwork for The Facts of Life was laid in the Season 1 finale of Diff'rent Strokes, titled "The Girls School." This episode served as what's called a backdoor pilot — essentially a sneaky audition for a potential new series.

In the episode, Mrs. Garrett helps Kimberly Drummond, "Dana Plato," with costumes for a school play at East Lake School for Girls. Through her interactions with the students, Mrs. Garrett finds herself aligned with the all-girls boarding school environment.

The story gave writers a clever way to explore a new setting while also explaining Kimberly's occasional absence from the Diff'rent Strokes plotline.

This single episode introduced audiences to several new characters, including Blair Warner, Natalie Green and Dorothy "Tootie" Ramsey, who would become household names in their own right.

Originally working under the title Garrett's Girls, the spin-off underwent many changes before it became The Facts of Life. Early drafts featured a much larger cast, including characters like Nancy, Sue Ann and even a young Molly Ringwald as the outspoken feminist, Molly.

By the second season, the series had trimmed its cast to focus on the core group that made the show legendary – Mrs. Garrett and her four main girls – Blair, Tootie, Natalie and the later addition of Jo Polniaczek, played by Nancy McKeon.

Charlotte Rae made her final regular appearance on Diff'rent Strokes in December 1979, months after The Facts of Life had already premiered, ensuring a smooth transition that didn't alienate fans of either show.

The Facts of Life became one of the highest-rated sitcoms of the 1980s, running for nine seasons and over 200 episodes. It proved that sometimes, the best spin-offs are the ones that feel like natural extensions of beloved characters' journeys.
