Serena Williams has been candid about her struggles with her postpartum body since giving birth
The tennis champion revealed to PEOPLE on Aug. 21 that she lost 31 lbs. after using a weight loss medication
Though she's been open about her weight loss journey, the mom of two shared that she "always felt comfortable at any size"
Serena Williams is getting candid about her weight loss.
The tennis champion has long advocated for women's health and has been open with her fans about her personal fitness journey. After welcoming her first daughter, Olympia, in 2017, Williams experienced the shift from being a full-time athlete to becoming a mom — a transition that impacted her body in new ways.
On Aug. 21, the mother of two revealed to PEOPLE that she had lost 31 lbs. since using a weight loss medication to aid in her health journey. Williams shared that it helped her have "a lot of energy" and she was feeling "pretty good about it," especially given her previous struggle with her postpartum body.
"I never was able to get to the weight I needed to be no matter what I did, no matter how much I trained," she said. "It was crazy because I'd never been in a place like that in my life where I worked so hard, ate so healthy and could never get down to where I needed to be at."
While reflecting on her progress, Williams also stressed that weight loss shouldn't define self-worth.
"Weight loss should never really change your self image," she said. "Women often experience judgment about their bodies at any size, and I'm no stranger to that. So I feel like you should love yourself at any size and any look."
Here's everything Serena Williams has said about her health journey and weight loss.

In the months after giving birth to Olympia, Williams got candid about struggling with how her appearance had changed, though over time, learned to accept her post-baby body.
In July 2019, Williams spoke to Who What Wear about how bodies fluctuate after giving birth, and shared some wisdom to new mothers: "I would just say that your body is imperfectly perfect after having a baby. Some people come back to what they looked like or better, but it takes a little bit longer. And some people end up having stretch marks or scars, like me."
She added, "I'd say embrace your imperfectly perfect body, because it produced an amazing human."
A "healthy lifestyle" helped her lose baby weight

In July 2018, Williams told PEOPLE that her technique to shed baby weight after giving birth to Olympia was having a "real healthy lifestyle."
"My secret to losing the baby weight was just working out and eating healthy and having a real healthy lifestyle," she said. "And it's hard — I still feel like I have some to lose. But hey, I'm taking it a day at a time."
In August 2023, she welcomed her second child: daughter Adira River. Nearly five months later, she shared a video of her doing barbell squats in a January 2024 Instagram post, writing that she was getting "back into the swing of things."
She likes to post "relatable content" about her weight loss journey

In January 2024, Williams got candid on Instagram when she opened up about wanting to fit into a denim skirt that she purchased while pregnant with Adira, which became a year-long "goal."
"I got this cool Valentino skirt when I was pregnant and I was like 'I'm gonna be able to fit this when I don't have a belly,' " she said in the video.
"Honestly, I should've been able to fit it by now, but I ran into some, um ... I got distracted for about a month," she continued. "Houston, we got a problem."
Throughout the year, Williams began documenting her progress, updating fans on whether she had reached her goal of fitting into the denim skirt. By July, she shared another video and said she was "saying a little prayer." While she was unable to zip it up completely, she said she'd still "made a lot of progress."
But by December, Williams accomplished her goal and was able to pull the skirt all the way up and secure the button and zipper.
"It just fits. An ounce more, it wouldn't," Williams said in the clip. "I need to give myself credit."
One month before sharing she had reached the goal, the tennis pro told PEOPLE she enjoyed sharing the behind-the-scenes journey with her fans — and showing that she isn't all that "different than anyone else."
"I love to try to post relatable content. And I'm not doing it on purpose, it's just who I am. I have the same struggles trying to fit in these darn skirts and I want to follow my health levels too. And I just think it's so cool for people to see that, especially for me growing up in Compton."
Williams added, "It's just like if there's anyone else watching, know that. Knowing that I'm not any different from you. I'm literally the same. And probably, if anything, you're probably smarter and better than I am. And that's kind of what I always like to preach or show."

In June 2024, a few months after giving birth to her second child, the WYN Beauty founder shared in an Instagram post that she underwent a skin-tightening procedure.
"Being ok to take time for myself is something I have always struggled with," she began the post, going on to explain that one of her friends treated her to a spa day during her last trip to Paris.
"She knows after 2 babies I have been self conscious of my tummy," she wrote. "The results have been amazing. I can see progress with my skin going back to normal and my confidence coming back. Listen my body will never be the same but neither will I cause I have 2 amazing lights in my life. @Olympiaohanian and @adiraohanian."
Williams added, "I will always love my birthing scars, but I just wanted to say thanks to my friend Mia and Nat for letting me know it's ok to take time for myself away from work and kids."

On Aug. 21, the athlete revealed to PEOPLE she has been using a GLP-1 medication — short for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists — to help with weight loss and had lost 31 lbs.
"I feel great," she said. "I feel really good and healthy. I feel light physically and light mentally."
The 23-time Grand Slam champion opened up about why her weight loss journey was "frustrating" after giving birth, and how the medication had helped.
"I had never taken shortcuts in my career and always worked really hard. I know what it takes to be the best," Williams said. "So it was very frustrating to do all the same things and never be able to change that number on the scale or the way my body looked."
She added, "I did a lot of research on it. I was like, 'is this a shortcut? What are the benefits? What are not the benefits?' I really wanted to dive into it before I just did it."
She consulted with a doctor through Ro, a direct-to-patient healthcare company, and was able to start the weekly injections about six months after her second child was born, when she stopped breastfeeding in early 2024.
"They were super supportive and it was easy to get the medication," Williams said. "I lost over 31 pounds using my GLP-1 and I was really excited about that weight loss."
She went on to say that the medication helped her "enhance" everything she was already doing, including eating healthy and working out.
Williams has "felt comfortable at any size"

During her conversation with PEOPLE about GLP-1, Williams explained that despite being open about her weight loss journey, she's "always felt comfortable at any size, whether I was a lot heavier or not."
"I've never felt that pressure to maintain a certain appearance," she said. "I do feel like my body didn't like me at that weight. I had pain in my joints and pain in different areas just because of the extra weight that I'm not used to carrying since I had children."
"But the size I was before, there was nothing wrong with it. It's just not what I wanted to have," Williams continued. "I just knew that I wanted to be where I personally felt comfortable."
