Inter Miami teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba will not play in the MLS All-Star Game, the league announced on Wednesday.

A team of MLS All-Stars is set to play a team of All-Stars from Mexico's Liga MX in in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday night. The league revealed the final MLS roster and Messi and Alba were not included.

Following an injury-filled 2024 season, the 38-year-old Messi has played every minute of Inter Miami's last 19 games. The Herons are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games.

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano hoped two of his key players would be able to miss the game saying last week, "The players are called up, I would like them to be able to rest but that is not my decision."

Both players were in the Inter Miami lineup during Saturday's 5-1 win over New York Red Bulls. Alba scored the team's first goal and Messi added two in the second half.

Will Messi, Alba face suspension?

MLS rules state that if a player pulls out of the All-Star Game without an approved medical reason they are subject to a one-game suspension. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives are set to talk about whether both players will be available for the team's next match on Saturday against FC Cincinnati.

Former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus.

No immediate decision has been made on the status of Messi and Alba, who were both voted into the 2025 MLS All-Star Game by fans and media.

"The league office needs to speak with the club before we confirm player availability for Saturday," a spokesperson told The Athletic.
