The New York Knicks have confirmed the hiring of Mike Brown as the team's new head coach.

Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, replaces Tom Thibodeau, who was fired by the Knicks last month after guiding the franchise to its deepest playoff run in 25 years.

The 55-year-old Brown was surprisingly fired by the Sacramento Kings in December, just months after he had signed a contract extension.

Brown was most recently named Coach of the Year in the 2022-23 season after leading the Kings to a 48-34 record and the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history.

"Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization," Knicks president Leon Rose said in a statement.

"His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach, and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans."

Brown was also named Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Cleveland Cavaliers to a league-best 66 wins, two years after reaching the NBA Finals.

He was on the coaching staff for the San Antonio Spurs team that won the 2003 NBA title, and the Golden State Warriors' coaching staff for their 2017, 2018 and 2022 championships.

The Knicks are in a strong position in the Eastern Conference heading into the new season, with fellow title hopefuls the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers suffering huge Achillies injury blows to star men Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton, respectively.

All Stars Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns proved a potent offensive duo in their first season together in New York as the team made the Eastern Conference Finals.

DETROIT (AP) — Keider Montero and three relievers combined on a five-hitter and the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Monday night.

The Tigers (58-34) have won four straight games while only allowing four runs, improving to 24 games over .500 for the first time since 2013.

Montero (4-1) allowed one run and four hits and a walk in six innings while striking out four. After losing his first start, Montero is 4-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 outings as a starter and bulk reliever.

Tyler Holton, Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest each pitched a scoreless inning to complete the win.

The Tigers took the lead in the second on Javier Báez's two-run homer into the Rays bullpen.

Jonathan Aranda made it 2-1 with a two-out RBI single in the third, but right fielder Zach McKinstry threw out Danny Jansen trying to go from first to third.

Riley Greene's RBI single put the Tigers up 3-1 in the fifth. before Colt Keith and McKinstry homered against reliever Paul Gervase in the eighth.

Key stat

Gleyber Torres walked in the first inning to extend his on-base streak to 20 games, the longest for a Tigers player since Kerry Carpenter's 24-game run in 2023. George Kell holds the franchise record at 57 games in 1950.

Key moment

Rays 3B Junior Caminero received applause from the Comerica Park crowd after flying into the stands while trying to catch Parker Meadows' foul pop-up in the eighth inning. Caminero ended up tangled up in the netting in a seated position and was helped out by Jansen and Tigers third-base coach Joey Cora. He stayed in the game after a quick check from the Rays training staff.

WNBA star DeWanna Bonner is returning to where her professional career began and signing with the Phoenix Mercury, ESPN reported Monday.

Terms of their agreement were not yet known, with the report indicating Bonner would sign in the days to come.

Bonner played her first 10 WNBA seasons with the Mercury, who selected her fifth overall in the 2009 draft. She began her illustrious career by helping Phoenix win the 2009 WNBA title and winning three straight Sixth Player of the Year awards in her first three seasons.

Bonner, 37, began this season with the Indiana Fever, who waived her on June 25 so she could pursue a role with another team.

"Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out and I appreciate the organization's willingness to grant my request to move on, particularly at this point in my career," Bonner said in a news release. "I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players."

In nine games (three starts) for Indiana, Bonner averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 21.3 minutes per contest, all down from her career averages of 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 30.2 minutes.

Bonner is the active WNBA leader in games played (511) and minutes played (15,441). In the first game of the season, she passed Tina Thompson as the league's third all-time leading scorer, behind only Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles. She now sits at 7,546 career points.

In Phoenix, Bonner would join a Mercury team that entered Monday's game against Dallas tied for second in the league standings at 12-6. She would reunite with Alyssa Thomas, her fiancee and former teammate with the Connecticut Sun.

Pacers president Kevin Pritchard was 'shocked' by Myles Turner-Bucks deal, says he learned about it on social media: 'I saw Shams tweet it'

 • Pacers president Kevin Pritchard was 'shocked' by Myles Turner-Bucks deal, says he learned about it on social media: 'I saw Shams tweet it'

Jason OwensJuly 7, 2025 at 10:10 PM

Indiana Pacers president Kevin Pritchard says he learned that Myles Turner was leaving for the Milwaukee Bucks alongside the rest of us. He saw the news on social media.

Pritchard spoke with media Monday on various topics, including the stunning departure of Turner to a Bucks team that waived Damian Lillard to clear the way for the deal. Pritchard said that he was "shocked" by the transaction and that he learned about it when ESPN's Shams Charania reported it.

"We did not see Milwaukee as that team. We would have been open on a sign-and-trade because it's sort of mutually beneficial, but we didn't get to that point, unfortunately," Pritchard said. "I saw Shams tweet it, and that's how I knew that Myles was taken away."

Turner left the Pacers for the division-rival Bucks on the heels of Indiana's run to the NBA Finals that ended with a Game 7 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Turner struggled in the Finals, but was instrumental in Indiana's postseason run as a 6-foot-11 center who can protect the rim on defense and space the floor on offense as an effective 3-point shooter.

[Get more Pacers news: Indiana team feed]

Before Tyrese Haliburton's Achilles injury in Game 7, it seemed like a given that the Pacers and Turner would reach a deal and that Indiana would run it back with the same core next season in a weakened Eastern Conference.

Even with the blow of Haliburton's injury that Pritchard confirmed Monday would sideline him for the entirety of next season, few, if any, saw Turner's departure to the Bucks coming. When it happened, the Pacers drew criticism for being "cheap" and unwilling to pay the NBA's luxury tax to keep a contending roster intact.

Pritchard on Monday denied that that was the case regarding Turner's departure. He said team owners Herb Simon and Steven Rales were willing to pay to keep Turner in town.

#Pacers president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard on Myles Turner signing with the Bucks:"Herb Simon and Steven Rales and the Simon family were fully prepared to go deep into the tax to keep him, and we really wanted to do that." pic.twitter.com/Et8zTQUcHN

— WISH-TV News (@WISHNews8) July 7, 2025

"Herb Simon and Steven Rales and the Simon family were fully prepared to go deep into the tax to keep him, and we really wanted to do that," Pritchard said. "We were negotiating in good faith.

"But what happens in this league is sometimes you're negotiating, but because a guy is unrestricted, he has the right to say, 'That's the offer I want. I'm gonna take it, and that's best for my family.'"

Pritchard added that "it was a little surprising" how the Bucks created the salary cap space to sign Turner.

Milwaukee signed Turner to a four-year, $107 million contract in a deal that was facilitated by waiving Lillard and stretching the remaining two years and $113 million of the injured All-Star's guard's contract. Like Haliburton, Lillard has a ruptured Achilles tendon that's expected to sideline him for most, if not all, of next season.

The Bucks prioritized the near future by adding a piece in Turner that may or may not help the franchise in its efforts to keep star Giannis Antetokounmpo happy on a roster that's fallen out of contention since winning the 2021 championship. Whether or not it ultimately makes the Bucks better is yet to be seen.

But one thing is almost certain. Turner's departure makes the Pacers worse. And the prospects of a 2025-26 season that just weeks ago was filled with promise in Indiana suddenly isn't.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres got his 2,000th career hit Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a sharp single off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.

The milestone hit came against starter Zac Gallen leading off the fourth inning. Machado received a standing ovation from the crowd at Petco Park, where he's been a fan favorite since joining the Padres in 2019.

"Doing it in front of the home crowd definitely is a lot better, and hopefully there's more," Machado said after San Diego's 6-3 loss.

The All-Star slugger singled to left field in the first for his 1,999th hit. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer against Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career.

Machado became the fifth active player and 297th all-time to reach the milestone. He is the 12th player to have 350 homers and 2,000 hits by his age-32 season.

"It's special and an honor to be a part of that list," Machado said. "Definitely would have wanted the victory, but stepping away from that, it's pretty cool."

He tipped his batting helmet to the crowd while standing on first base.

"Wow, literally hats off. What an accomplishment," Padres manager Mike Shildt said. "We're happy for it. He earned it."

Machado made his debut with Baltimore in 2012 and got 977 hits with the Orioles before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 18, 2018. He had 73 hits with the Dodgers before signing as a free agent with the Padres on Feb. 21, 2019.

He has 950 hits with San Diego, which ranks fifth on the franchise list. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn had 3,141 in his 20-season career.

Machado was voted the starting third baseman for the National League All-Star team this year.
