President Donald Trump used an antisemitic slur to describe exploitative bankers during a speech Thursday as he touted congressional passage of his massive domestic policy bill.

Trump made the remark in Des Moines, Iowa, at what was billed as an event by a nonpartisan group to kick off celebrations for next year's 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. But Trump's campaign-style speech quickly took on a partisan tone, with the president expressing "hate" for the Democrats who voted against his "big, beautiful bill."

While ticking through the bill's provisions, Trump described one aimed at protecting family farmers by allowing them to pay a reduced estate tax when transferring ownership to their children.

"No death tax, no estate tax, no going to the banks and borrowing from, in some cases, a fine banker, and in some cases, shylocks and bad people," Trump said. "They destroyed a lot of families, but we did the opposite."

When asked by reporters after his speech about the antisemitic connotations of the term, Trump said, "I've never heard it that way."

"To me, shylock is somebody that's a money lender at high rates" he added.

"Shylock" is a Jewish character in "The Merchant of Venice." In its description of the Shakespeare play, the Anti-Defamation League notes that the character, who serves as an antagonist, is frequently portrayed as a "conniving and cruel" money lender, reinforcing stereotypes of Jewish people as money-hungry and greedy.

Amy Spitalnick, the CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said Thursday night in a post on X that the term is "among the most quintessential antisemitic stereotypes."

"This is not an accident. It follows years in which Trump has normalized antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories — and it's deeply dangerous," she added.

Former President Joe Biden faced backlash in 2014 for using the same term while serving as vice president. He later apologized for "poor" word choice.

The Anti-Defamation League, which criticized Biden's remarks at the time, said Trump's use of the term was "very troubling and irresponsible," adding that it "underscores how lies and conspiracies about Jews remain deeply entrenched in our country."

"The term 'Shylock' evokes a centuries-old antisemitic trope about Jews and greed that is extremely offensive and dangerous," the ADL said in a statement on X. "Words from our leaders matter and we expect more from the President of the United States."

The remark by Trump came as he delivered a more than hourlong speech praising the passage of the "big, beautiful bill," before a cheerful crowd of several hundred supporters, some holding signs that read "Make Agriculture Great Again."

Trump has previously faced accusations of antisemitism, including in 2024 after his former chief of staff John Kelly said Trump praised Hitler as doing "some good things, too."

During his first term in office, Jewish groups criticized Trump after he put white supremacists chanting "Jews will not replace us" on the same level as counterprotesters at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.

During his second term, Trump's administration has created a federal task force that plans to visit 10 university campuses in a bid to "eradicate antisemitic harassment."

The State Department has also moved to revoke visas for foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian protests, including Mahmoud Khalil who was detained for more than two months despite holding a green card, for leading protests at Columbia University.

And, the Department of Homeland Security implemented a new vetting policy in April enabling U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to consider a foreign national's "antisemitic activity on social media" as grounds for denying immigration benefit requests, including those applying for lawful permanent resident status.

Zoey LyttleJuly 4, 2025 at 6:00 PM

Angel Reyes; Marty Jacobsen

Angel Ruiz, before and after her nose job.

Angel Ruiz competed in the Miss Illinois USA pageant five times before winning. Just before her sixth time on the state-level stage, she underwent a rhinoplasty and took home the crown three months later

Though Ruiz waited until age 25 to get the operation, she tells PEOPLE she wanted it for as long as she could remember conceptualizing her own image. She believes the operation gave her the confidence to win and compete at the national Miss USA pageant

Ruiz says plastic surgery is more common among contestants than some will admit, though she's focused on opening up the conversation about cosmetic surgery in the pageantry world

Angel Ruiz is no stranger to the thrill of walking across a pageant stage. By the time she won her first crown, she had participated in five previous Miss Illinois USA pageants. Ruiz knew how to talk to judges in interviews and, for the most part, she could confidently hit her mark, but deep down, she knew one insecurity was holding her back from a title win.

At age 25, Ruiz made a major change in her life as she dreamed of competing in the Miss USA national pageant. The Chicago-based contestant underwent a rhinoplasty, a surgery she'd long considered and researched.

Ruiz got her start in the pageant world at age 15, but her feelings about her appearance — namely, her awareness of her nose — date back even further.

Joe Devine

Angel Ruiz.

"Getting my nose done with something that I knew I always wanted to get done from very early on, ever since I could even conceptualize image," the now-28-year-old tells PEOPLE. "In the process of everything, I didn't let anyone know I was doing it ... I was confident in my decision. I just went for it and just popped out with a new nose."

On the other side of her nose job, which was completed by double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Anil Shah, Ruiz carried herself with a new strength. Given how subjective pageant judging is, Ruiz admits it's hard to determine what the "end-all, be-all reason" was for her eventual Miss Illinois USA win after years of competing. But she does believe her rhinoplasty set her up with a different kind of self-assurance.

"I've always been very headstrong. Although I did have an insecurity, I didn't allow it to hinder me or my performance in terms of being on the stage," she explains. "However, I did know that it was something that I did want to improve on and that would allow me to express myself and put my best foot forward if I did get it done."

WGN Chicago Channel 9

Angel Ruiz after winning Miss Illinois USA.

In May 2022, three months after getting her cosmetic surgery, Ruiz was crowned Miss Illinois USA. Later that year, she finally represented the midwestern state in the Miss USA pageant. Looking back, she tells PEOPLE that "there wasn't any shadow of a doubt in my mind" that she completely deserved the Illinois crown.

"I felt very empowered. I knew that now that I had got this big title and that I was ready to go onto the big leagues and compete for Miss USA," says Ruiz. "I knew I had made the right decision."

Pageantry is rooted in judgement, as Ruiz notes, "You're literally opening up yourself for people to judge you." Sometimes that judgement takes place on the stage or in the interview round, but Ruiz isn't oblivious to the less public judgement she received off stage, too.

"All the girls in the dressing room, you're looking at each individual. You're in a competition, you're looking at each other's bodies, you're looking at everything," she shares. "There were comments like, 'Oh, she looks too fake, and it's plastic or unnatural,' and that comes with the territory, unfortunately."

Despite the fact that plenty of contestants undergo plastic surgeries of their own, Ruiz says it's hardly discussed in the open, honest way she decided to talk about her nose job. She opted for transparency in the interest of setting a good example and not misleading others to believe her enhanced image is "unattainable."

Daniel Duverny

Angel Ruiz.

Now, Ruiz is doing her part to make cosmetic operations a normalized part of the pageantry conversation. As a former contestant and winner, she has returned to the competition as a judge, and in the interview round, Ruiz makes sure to ask, "What are your views on cosmetic enhancements?"

It's actually a big question in pageant interviews, according to Ruiz. Naturally, she conceived the perfect answer for the plastic surgery prompt.

"I always say three very simple things ... Do it for yourself, do it with a professional, and make sure you do your research and your homework because this is ultimately something that you can't go back from," she tells PEOPLE. "You have to want to do it for yourself and not for anybody else."

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — McLaren boss Zak Brown says it would be a "disaster" for Red Bull if four-time reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen were to leave the team.

Verstappen has declined to say whether he'll stay with the team for next year amid speculation about a potential move to Mercedes. Brown said Saturday at the British Grand Prix that if the rumors aren't true, then Verstappen, Red Bull or Mercedes should dispel them.

"I don't know, but the fact that no one will definitively commit to where Max is driving clearly indicates something is going on," Brown told the . "If Max were to leave Red Bull, it would be a disaster for them."

Verstappen's title defense isn't going to plan as he sits third in the standings, 61 points off the lead. He has scored 155 of Red Bull's 162 points.

Ahead of Sunday's race in Silverstone, Verstappen said he'd prefer to spend the rest of his F1 career with Red Bull. But he wouldn't comment when asked if he'll remain with the team for 2026 or if he's had contact with Mercedes.

"I always said to the team it would be ideal, and I think they think the same way, to finish off my career in Formula 1 with one team," Verstappen told broadcasters Thursday. "I think that would be something amazing, and that's what we are still trying to achieve."

LeBron James responds to photo of him at Cavaliers' practice facility: 'Y'all bored man!'

-

 • LeBron James responds to photo of him at Cavaliers' practice facility: 'Y'all bored man!'

Ian CasselberryJuly 5, 2025 at 9:01 AM

Amid uncertainty surrounding LeBron James' future with the Los Angeles Lakers and analysts, including Yahoo Sports contributor Tom Haberstroh, asserting that a return to the Eastern Conference might be in his best interests if he wants to pursue one more NBA championship, the four-time MVP appearing at another team's practice facility was sure to ignite trade speculation.

James was spotted at the Cleveland Cavaliers' headquarters Saturday, posing for a photo with rookie Denver Jones, who was signed to the team's summer league roster. Naturally, that raised eyebrows and started conversation as to what might be happening. Was this a step toward James returning to his hometown team, with whom he had two separate tenures and won an NBA title?

Upon learning that fans and media were asking such questions as the photo of him at the Cavs' facility circulated online, James addressed the chatter directly.

And every summer since it was built. I live here still and train every summer. Got damn yall bored man! Go get a plate of food somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July!

— LeBron James (@KingJames) July 4, 2025

"And every summer since it was built," James posted on social media, responding to a post showing him at Cleveland's practice facility. "I live here still and train every summer. Got damn, y'all bored man! Go get a plate of food somewhere and enjoy the 4th of July!"

Why not speculate and also enjoy some July 4 food? Yes, James is right that every action of his is being scrutinized right now as NBA teams can officially sign free agents and make trades as of Sunday. That will likely continue until the Lakers report to training camp in October.

James and his agent, Rich Paul, invited the conjecture with the statement issued after the NBA's all-time leading scorer picked up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul told ESPN on Sunday. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

Whether or not the Lakers can realistically assemble a roster capable of contending for a championship while paying James nearly $53 million and $46 million to Luka Dončić is exactly the circumstance fueling the questions surrounding the possibility of him staying with the team. Could a trade or buyout be in the future?

James' testy response aside, it's certainly possible that he's having a bit of fun with such speculation and knew exactly what would happen when he posed for that photo at the Cavaliers' facility. There's a whole summer still to be filled with NBA offseason content.

Pope Leo takes first action to address abuse by Catholic clergy

By Joshua McElwee

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -Pope Leo on Saturday appointed a French archbishop as the new leader of the Vatican's commission on clergy sexual abuse, in the U.S. pontiff's first public move to confront an issue that has damaged the global Church's credibility.

Thibault Verny, 59, will be president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors while also remaining the archbishop of Chambery in southeast France.

The Vatican commission was created by Pope Francis in 2014 in an effort by the late pontiff to respond after sexual abuse scandals affected the Church in countries across the world.

The scandals have damaged the Church's standing as a moral voice, led to lawsuits costing millions in countries across the globe, and resulted in a number of resignations of bishops.

Verny said he was committed to improving the Church's safeguarding measures.

"We will promote the ... equitable sharing of resources so that all parts of the Church, regardless of geography or circumstance, can uphold the highest standards of protection," he said in a statement.

Verny replaces Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the former archbishop of Boston. O'Malley, 81, had been serving beyond the Church's traditional retirement age of 80 for bishops.

O'Malley had led the group since its creation.

While some victims have praised the commission's efforts, it has also been roiled by the resignations of several of its members over the years.

In 2023, a prominent Jesuit priest and papal adviser stepped down, saying publicly that he had concerns over the way the group was operating.

Verny was first made a member of the commission by Francis in 2022. He has also led the French Church's safeguarding efforts.

O'Malley praised the appointment, saying in a statement Verny is "a collaborative leader committed to advancing the global adoption of protection and safeguarding, to as best possible assure the safety of those in the care of the Church throughout the world".

NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil, arms clasped behind his back, tossed his bat and shouted toward the New York Mets dugout, starting up the first base line as his go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning off Luke Weaver sailed into the second deck at Citi Field.

Twenty-five minutes later, the second baseman sprinted a half-dozen steps to his left, sprawled onto the outfield grass and with an outstretched glove angled toward the right-field corner snagged DJ LeMahieu's one-hopper. McNeil popped to his feet and threw to first for the second out of the ninth.

"The homer was sick," McNeil said after the Mets overcame a pair of two-run deficits to beat the New York Yankees 6-5 on Friday in the opener of this season's second Subway Series. "I love hitting homers. I don't hit that many. But at the same time, because I hit the home run, I think that play was a little bit bigger."

In a thrilling back-and-forth struggle on a sunny Fourth of July that included seven home runs, the Yankees wasted 2-0 and 5-3 leads and the Mets squandered a 3-2 advantage. The Mets won their third straight game after losing 14 of 17, while the Yankees lost their fifth in a row.

Both teams were in first place when their series in the Bronx began on May 16. The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25, and then both plunged like skydivers. The Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15.

With 13 pitchers on the injured list, the Mets gave 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman his first major league start. Jasson Domínguez went deep leading off, ending a 32-game homerless streak, and Aaron Judge followed with his 32nd home run. Hagenman retired his next nine batters.

"All of New York here basically watching the game," he marveled.

Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff drive into a double starting the bottom half and Juan Soto followed with a two-run homer off Marcus Stroman.

"He's kind of getting the momentum right back," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said about Soto's shot. "That was kind of like a setting-the-tone moment. OK, they punch, we're going to punch back. ... It's game on."

Soto went 1 for 10 with no extra-base hits in his Yankee Stadium return. He had three hits in this one, doubling in the third and scoring when Pete Alonso singled on a 108.3 mph scorching grounder off the glove of shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Cody Bellinger's homer tied the score in the fourth and Domínguez hit a two-run homer for a 5-3 lead in the fifth against Austin Warren. Brett Baty's sixth-inning homer against Ian Hamilton cut the margin to one.

Weaver relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Alonso. McNeil worked the count full and figured he'd get a pitch at the bottom of the strike zone. He hit a no-doubt drive on the fourth changeup of the at-bat, his ninth home run this season.

Now 33 and a two-time All-Star, McNeil has been with the Mets organization since they drafted him a dozen years ago.

"He's a gamer, man, and he's always ready to go," Mendoza said. "He's a pretty important player for this roster."

Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring.

"I said I've been feeling good. That just might be a lie now. I don't know. It's hard to make sense of what's going on," Weaver said. "At this point I've got two options. I can sulk and feel bad for myself or I can foundationally grind and find a way to just be flat-out better."

Reed Garrett, who had a 15.00 ERA in his previous eight appearances, worked the eighth for a depleted Mets bullpen, getting three outs around a single. Garrett tried to avoid Mendoza when he got back to the dugout.

"I was trying to walk away so he couldn't take me out of the game," Garrett said.

With closer Edwin Díaz unavailable after pitching the previous two days, Mendoza let Garrett work the ninth.

Trent Grisham, pinch hitting for the slumping Volpe, flied out. LeMahieu followed with his looping one-hopper toward the hole that seemed destined to be a hit.

"He comes out of nowhere and just dives for the ball and really, really got me shocked," said Soto, who was charging in from right field.

"It's by you, you've got to just throw your glove at it and try to kind of scoop it," McNeil said. "I knew it was a big play because I knew Judge was up fourth that inning and we don't want him coming to the plate."

Five pitches later, Domínguez hit a routine grounder to McNeil. Garrett screamed and pumped a fist.

"I think we've shown a lot over the last month of just who we are as a team," he said. "I think if you back us into a corner, we're going to fight our way out of it."
