WASHINGTON (Reuters) -President Donald Trump travels to Iowa on Thursday to kick off celebrations marking America's 250th anniversary next year and to tout recent trade and legislative actions to heartland voters who helped propel his return to the White House.

Trump will deliver a campaign-style speech at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, a familiar stop for presidential candidates in the early primary state. Trump won Iowa's 2024 Republican caucuses by a historically large margin and carried the state by 13 percentage points in the general election.

His latest visit comes ahead of a Friday deadline he set for Congress to pass his sweeping tax and spending legislation, a cornerstone of his second-term domestic agenda that touches everything from immigration to energy policy.

In remarks mixing patriotism and policy, Trump will aim to reassure Iowa's voters that his administration is defending their interests and delivering tangible results, according to a person with knowledge of the speech.

Trump's trade policies have whipsawed agricultural communities in Iowa, creating economic uncertainty and testing loyalties. Iowa farmers have been hit hard, especially with China's retaliatory tariffs slashing soybean exports and prices.

In a Truth Social post on Tuesday announcing his trip, Trump called Iowa "one of my favorite places in the world."

"I'll also tell you some of the GREAT things I've already done on Trade, especially as it relates to Farmers. You are going to be very happy with what I say," Trump said.

At recent Republican town halls in Iowa, tensions flared as farmers and constituents pressed congressional leaders, including Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, to push back against Trump's retaliatory tariffs.

Some Republicans also worry that deep cuts to the Medicaid health program in their sweeping tax bill will hurt the party's prospects in the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump has made several memorable trips to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. In 2015, the reality TV star and presidential candidate gave children rides on his personal helicopter as he aimed to overshadow Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

In 2023, Trump's private jet buzzed low over the crowds in another flashy power move, stealing the spotlight from primary rival Ron DeSantis as he campaigned on the ground below.

Japan PM Ishiba says President Trump may be misinformed on some tariff issues

July 3, 2025 at 9:14 PM

TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Thursday U.S. President Donald Trump's views on some tariff-related issues may be based on misunderstanding or misinformation, as a pause on a 24% reciprocal tariff on imports from Japan expires next week.

"We hear President Trump say no U.S. cars are running in Japan and that we are not importing (U.S.) rice. That could be based on misunderstanding or misinformation," Ishiba said on public broadcaster NHK's news programme.

Japan has in fact imported historically high volumes of U.S. rice in recent months as domestically grown rice has skyrocketed in price since last year, hurting consumers.

Ishiba said, however, tariff negotiations with the United States are making steady progress, without going into specifics.

Haitian immigrant high schooler detained by ICE despite legal status

Nancy Cutler, USA TODAY NETWORK July 3, 2025 at 9:16 PM

A 20-year-old from Haiti has been held in immigration detention for weeks, missing the end of his junior year of high school, although he is in the country legally and his father is a United States citizen.

Spring Valley High School student Alan Junior Pierre was picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in early June and is being held at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, his lawyer said.

The Haitian national, who has no criminal history, had been provided parole by ICE in January, when he sought asylum at the United States-Mexico border, his lawyer Vince Sykes told The Journal News/lohud, part of the USA TODAY Network. The status was based on humanitarian considerations and family support.

Pierre is one of a growing number of migrants who entered the United States legally, have broken no laws, but are detained by ICE after showing up at court hearings related to their immigration status.

"He applied for admission using the legal procedure that was in place," Sykes said.

He followed all the rules, but now, his lawyer said, Pierre sits in an ICE facility; he missed the last weeks of school; he cannot see his family.

In the same situation: Boy with leukemia held in detention, threatened with deportation

Finally safe, until a May 5 appointment

Haiti is so dangerous the state department has issued a "do not travel" warning for the country, saying the risk of kidnapping, crime and civil unrest is too high. Gangs exceed government control in the poorest nation in the region.

Alan Pierre appeared to finally be safe from those dangers — his parole status continues through January 2026, according to documents.

Now his family is fearful he could end up back in Haiti amid the violence there, said his father, Dutan Pierre of Nanuet, New York, near the New Jersey border.

Dutan Pierre of Spring Valley holds his phone containing a photo of his son Alan, 20, July 2, 2025. Alan Pierre was arrested by ICE officers on June 3 and has been in an immigration detention center in Newark ever since. Alan had arrived from Haiti several months earlier, was in the country legally having been granted parole, and had enrolled at Spring Valley High School.

The dad went to Newark, New Jersey, 35 miles away, to try and meet with his son, but was turned away and told to come back on a visiting day. When the father returned, he was told there were no more visitor slots open that day.

With translation help and emotional support from the Rev. Jean Claude Dorcelly of Rock Apostle Church in Spring Valley, Dutan Pierre told The Journal News/lohud that his son is a kind and smart kid. If he was sent back to Haiti, the young man would be all alone and at grave risk, Dutan Pierre added.

A routine appointment leads to detention

Dutan Pierre is a United States citizen and filed a US 1-130 "Petition for Alien Relative" application and adjustment of status on behalf of his son. That allows a relative to stay and apply for permanent residency status, commonly called a green card.

Alan Pierre could be eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status because he is a full-time student and under age 21.

Despite those factors, ICE took him into custody June 3 after a routine appointment at a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Application Support Center.

"He received a fingerprint application in the Bronx about four weeks ago," his attorney, Vince Sykes said. "He went for his fingerprint appointment and got picked up by ICE."

Sykes also has been unable to meet with Alan Pierre, although he has now set up a video meeting.

Meanwhile, ICE officials presented paperwork to Alan Pierre to sign and voluntarily be deported, Sykes said. But, the young man didn't sign.

"This is why you want people to have counsel immediately," the lawyer said, citing the Sixth Amendment right to prompt legal representation.

Sykes said he believes there's no legal basis for ICE's actions.

"It is ironic — and deeply troubling — that his compliance with the immigration process triggered his detention," Sykes wrote in a June 24 letter to the ICE Field Office director in Newark, which was obtained by The Journal News/lohud.

How a complex system foils Alan Pierre

A quick resolution has been frustrated, Sykes said, by Alan Pierre's efforts to follow the rules.

Because Alan Pierre presented himself at the United States-Mexico border and was granted parole status by Customs and Border Patrol, ICE has jurisdiction over his case.

That means the case operates outside the federal immigration courts.

"It means the immigration judge doesn't have jurisdiction to release him on bond," Sykes said. "Any immigration judge would release him; he's got no criminal record. It makes absolutely no sense that he should be detained."

Born in Nyack, stuck in Haiti: Family finally wins fight to prove woman's U.S. citizenship

Even if he was able to get a Rockland Family Court proceeding scheduled to seek special juvenile status in his father's home state, Alan Pierre wouldn't be able to show up for court because he remains detained in New Jersey.

Sykes said a habeas corpus petition could be filed in federal court — basically a last-ditch civil effort to challenge the legality of Pierre's detention. "It's very exhaustive and involved," Sykes said.

Meanwhile, there's a concern that Alan Pierre could be moved to a different facility, which would mean the judicial proceedings would have to start over with a new judge.

When asked about what could happen if Alan Pierre does get deported, Dutan Pierre became too emotional to get out more than a couple words in English.

"This is so sad," the father said in Haitian Creole. "If he does go to Haiti he would be by himself. The bandits destroyed everything."

Supreme Court rejects Montana's bid to revive parental consent law for minors' abortions

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Thursday it will not hear a case involving a push to revive a law that minors must have their parents' permission for an abortion in Montana, where voters have enshrined the right to abortion in the state's constitution.

The justices rebuffed an appeal from the Republican-led state seeking to overturn a Montana Supreme Court ruling that struck down the law. The parental consent law passed in 2013 but was blocked in court and never took effect before it was invalidated last year.

Montana state leaders say that decision violated parents' rights.

"The right that Montana seeks to vindicate here — parents' right to know about, and participate in, their child's medical decisions — falls well within the core of parents' fundamental rights," state attorneys argued in court documents.

Two conservative justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, wrote separately to say the high court's denial to take up the case was about its technical legalities rather than rejection of the state's argument.

Planned Parenthood argued that the Montana Supreme Court decision balanced the rights of parents and of minors in a state that has protected the right to abortion. Montana's highest recognized a right to abortion before the Supreme Court overturned it nationwide, and voters also enshrined it in the Montana Constitution last year.

"Petitioners seek to use the parental right as a cudgel against a minor's rights," the group wrote. "The broader interests of the child must be accounted for along with parental rights."

The law would require notarized, written consent for people younger than 18 to get an abortion. It would also allow minors to petition judges for permission, a process known as judicial bypass. Montana also has another law in place requiring parents be notified of minors' abortions.

More than two dozen states require parents consent to abortions for minors, though the laws have also been blocked in California and New Mexico, according to data gathered by KFF, a nonprofit that researches health care issues. Twelve more states require parental notification, though three of those laws are also blocked in court.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Danish police said Thursday they have deployed officers to the Israeli embassy in the Nordic country's capital to examine a suspicious package.

Copenhagen police wrote on X that "we are present at the Israeli embassy, where we are investigating a shipment received."

They added that "we currently have no further information."

Danish public broadcaster DR showed photos of several police and emergency vehicles near the embassy, including what they reported was a hazmat emergency response team vehicle.

Police wrote on X that they had blocked roads near the embassy.

Anders Frederiksen, duty chief at the Copenhagen Police, told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that "ordinary citizens in the area should not be worried."

A spokesperson reached by phone at the press department of the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen said he could not comment on the situation.

Security officials in many European countries have increased surveillance and protection of Israeli and Jewish institutions after a 12-day war broke out between Israel and Iran in June.

Last week, security officers arrested a man in the Danish city of Aarhus on suspicion of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Germany for Iranian intelligence.

Prosecutors said the man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on "Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals" in Berlin. They didn't elaborate.

He spied on three properties in June, "presumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets," prosecutors said.

German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that "if this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation," adding in a statement that "the protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government."

Germany has requested the extradition of the suspect.
