AARHUS, Denmark (AP) — Denmark launched its presidency of the European Union on Thursday with a call for Europe to unite to take on war in Ukraine and chaos caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's global tariff hike which are likely to mark the Nordic country's six-month term at the helm of the world's biggest trading bloc.

"We have war on European soil. We face trade wars, and new tariffs, and we have our closest ally, in the United States, turning increasingly inward," said Danish European Affairs Minister Marie Bjerre. "Europe can no longer be in the shadow of the United States. We need now to stand on our own two feet."

Prime Minister Mette Fredericksen and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were in the western city of Aarhus for a day of celebratory events as Denmark started its eighth EU presidency since joining in 1973.

Presidencies rotate between the 27 EU member countries every six months. The nation in charge sets policy priorities and organizes the bloc's working agenda. It's supposed to act as an "honest broker," setting aside national interests to foster consensus.

Denmark is entering its term with the motto "A Strong Europe in a Changing World." Its aim is to help ensure the EU can take responsibility for its own security, boost economic competitiveness and tackle climate change.

The ceremony was held as large parts of Europe sweltered in high temperatures.

Russia's war on Ukraine, now in its fourth year, is seen as an existential challenge in Europe and will weigh heavily on most policy debate. Economic turmoil also lies ahead. Trump's 90-day tariff pause ends on July 9 with no EU-U.S. trade deal in place as yet.

Getting defense on track and gunning for 5%

NATO has warned that Russia could be ready to attack another European country in 3-5 years. To prepare, the military alliance — most of whose members are EU countries — has agreed that national military and defense-related investment should rise to 5% of GDP.

Denmark's priority will be to set Europe on track to properly defend itself by 2030. That will require laying the groundwork for countries to buy the military equipment needed to execute NATO's defense plans with Trump's security priorities lying outside Europe.

That will mean wrapping up negotiations on proposals that will help countries purchase and make military equipment together.

Enlargement and another defense front

Helping Ukraine, but also Moldova, to join the EU soon is another security priority. Moldova has been shaken by Russian meddling in the form of energy coercion, election interference and disinformation campaigns.

Denmark says it aims to keep the two moving toward membership together, but Hungary is blocking Ukraine's path. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán insists that Ukraine should remain a buffer zone between Russia and NATO countries.

With fresh elections in Moldova in September, pressure is mounting for the EU to "decouple" their accession tracks. Bjerre said "all political and practical means" will be used first to persuade Hungary — a small EU country and the only one standing in Ukraine's way — to lift its veto.

She said it's important to send clear signals to Balkans countries. Most have waited many years to join.

Honing a competitive edge

As Trump wages tariff war, trade has changed drastically. The EU has sought new trade agreements with other countries, such as India, while other trade pacts are being revamped. Denmark says it's important to accelerate that process.

The government in Copenhagen says it's also seeking to cut more bureaucratic red tape in order to speed up innovation.

A major challenge looms in the form of the EU's next long-term budget. Von der Leyen plans to unveil the commission's blueprint for the seven-year spending package, which should enter force in 2028, on July 16.

With defense spending increases weighing heavily on national purses, member countries are unlikely to want to stump up more funds for European priorities. Denmark's aim is to get the debate — which could run for two years — off on the right track.

Managing climate change

Despite some backsliding, the EU still holds to its goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, by cutting greenhouse gases and compensating for any remaining emissions. Denmark will lead work on setting a 2040 target to guide climate action and investment to keep the bloc on track.

Part of that will be the transition away from fossil fuels to green energy forms. Russia's war on Ukraine has highlighted the dangers of energy dependence on any one supplier.

Sanctions and political pressure have not stopped some EU countries of getting their oil and gas from Russia, although the level of dependency has dropped markedly since 2022. Denmark says the continued phase out remains a priority.

Copenhagen also says it should be easier for farmers to respect EU rules. It wants the bloc's agricultural policy to be simple and business friendly. One goal is to finalize negotiations on a rule simplification package.

Migration policy, outsourcing continues

In 2021, Frederiksen spoke of a vision of "zero asylum-seekers," and her government will continue down the EU track of seeking "innovative solutions" to better manage migrants.

Unable to agree how best to cope, EU countries have mostly focused on deporting people. They've tried to establish "return hubs" in countries outside the bloc where rejected asylum-seekers could be sent. That approach will continue. Denmark says it's important to persuade people not to set out for Europe in the first place.

Work will also continue on preparing the vast asylum and migration policy pact to come into force next year. The pact was seen as the answer to Europe's migration woes, but countries still differ on how best to tackle the challenge.

Under international law, people have a right to asylum if they fear for their lives, safety or persecution.

Blue Jays tie Yankees atop AL East despite blowing 8-0 lead

Jack BaerJuly 2, 2025 at 8:59 PM

The road to first place wasn't pretty for the Toronto Blue Jays, but they celebrated nonetheless.

The Blue Jays tied the New York Yankees atop the Al East on Wednesday with one of the more dramatic games of the year. They blew an 8-0 lead before an eighth-inning rally gave them the victory. Both teams now have 48-38 records.

Toronto entered the three-game series vs. the Yankees knowing full well that a sweep would give them sole possession of first place in the division. Step 1 was a runaway 12-5 win on Tuesday. It appeared Step 2 would be even simpler when the Blue Jays hung seven runs on the Yankees in the first inning Wednesday, with home runs from Addison Barger and Davis Schneider.

A rally in the third made it an eight-run lead, but then the Yankees' AL-best offense went to work. They got six runs back in the fifth inning, and then Aaron Judge did this to tie the game and stun the home fans in the top of the eighth:

— MLB (@MLB) July 3, 2025

Say this for the Blue Jays: They didn't let blowing an eight-run lead keep them down. They responded quickly in the bottom of the inning, with George Springer walking, stealing second base, taking third on a flyout and scoring on a wild pitch to take back the lead.

Barger then hit an RBI single to make it 11-9.

Jeff Hoffman closed it out in the ninth, aided by a jumping catch at the wall from center fielder Myles Straw.

MAKE A PLAY, MYLES https://t.co/u4XxLkXHQNpic.twitter.com/i1Ke9TlHT0

— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) July 3, 2025

The win gives the Blue Jays the chance to take sole possession of the division lead on Thursday, with starting pitcher Chris Bassitt scheduled to face the Yankees' Clarke Schmidt.

Not many people expected the Jays to be competitive in a crowded AL East, and in some ways, they're over-performing. Their plus-6 run differential ranks fourth in the division. They seemed out of contention when a four-game losing streak pushed their record to 16-20 on May 7, but their 31-18 record since then is second-best in MLB.

So much has been made about the Blue Jays and their path forward in recent years. They made very clear that they still believe they can contend with their $500 million Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contract extension, plus the $92.5 million Anthony Santander free-agent deal and the trade that landed Andrés Giménez's $106.5 million deal.

Not everything is paying dividends (Santander is on the IL after hitting .179 in 50 games), but Toronto has enough working in the meantime. We'll soon see if they can do it in the second half as well.

ATLANTA (AP) — Jurickson Profar started his day Wednesday by addressing his teammates in the Atlanta Braves clubhouse, apologizing for missing the last 80 games for violating Major League Baseball's joint drug prevention and treatment program.

He ended it by talking to reporters in that same clubhouse after going 2 for 4 with a home run and two runs scored in Atlanta's 8-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

"I got to talk to my teammates and to the fans and to everyone and to put it behind me," Profar said. "It's all about winning. I'm going to do everything I can to help the team win every night."

Profar's solo home run down the right-field line came in the seventh inning with the Braves leading 7-2. His single with two outs in the sixth may have been more important, as it sparked a seven-run outburst that allowed the Braves to take control.

Profar, an All-Star with the Padres last season after he had career highs in home runs, RBIs and OPS, signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the Braves in the offseason. After four games, he was suspended without pay following his positive test for Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG) and he is ineligible for the postseason for 2025.

He returned to a Braves team that was 38-46 entering Wednesday and getting virtually no production from left field. The Braves were last in the majors in home runs (2) and OPS (.523) this season from the position.

"It's kind of nice to have that switch hitter in the middle of the lineup and feel good when he's up there," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "He's going to have a good at-bat and take some walks. That makes the lineup a little longer."

Profar took responsibility for his failed drug test before the game and was glad he had a chance to talk to the team upon his return.

"I know I put them in a very, very tough position," he said. "But again, I'm here and ready to go to the battle with them and give my everything that I got to help us get to the playoffs."

Pochettino says pro-visitor crowd in St. Louis was `like to play in Guatemala'

July 2, 2025 at 9:30 PM

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mauricio Pochettino got a feel for what the U.S. men's national team still faces at times during home games: a crowd rooting for the opposition.

"It was like to play in Guatemala," the coach said after his team got two early goals from Diego Luna and hung on for a 2-1 win Wednesday night that advanced the Americans to the CONCACAF Gold Cup final. "That was good for our players because it was an atmosphere that we didn't expect."

The U.S. will play Mexico on Sunday in Houston, the Americans' last competitive match before next year's World Cup.

A sellout crowd of 22,423 at Energizer Park energized Los Chapines, who outshot the U.S. 20-12 and got an 80th-minute goal from Olger Escobar.

"That is football," Pochettino said. "When we say the connection in between the fans and the team, that is the connection that we'd like to see in the World Cup. That connection that makes you fly, because (of) the energy that translates."

U.S. players are used to some home matches where the support is overwhelmingly for the opponent.

"We're a country full of immigrants, so it was kind of expected for tonight," defender Chris Richards said. "It was good for some of the younger guys to kind of experience that tonight, but for us experienced guys, we went through World Cup qualifiers with the exact same stuff, so I think that was a good lesson that the team needed to learn."

An Argentine who played for his nation 20 times, Pochettino comes from a culture where soccer dominates life.

"I saw player of the Guatemala crying," he said. "That is the way that we need to feel, and our fans need to feel the same. It's not to come here and to enjoy f the spectacle and if you lose, nothing happens. Yes, it happens a lot. Things happen because you play for your pride, you play for many, many things that I think I cannot tell you tonight. But I think it's good for our players .... I came from Argentina and in Argentina it's not the same win or lose. The consequences are massive."

"The rest of the opponents and the different countries," he added, "you play for survival, you play for food, you play for pride, you play for many things. It's not to go and enjoy and go home and laugh and that's it."

Luna has showed the hunger Pochettino wants. The 21-year-old impressed the coach when he continued playing with a broken nose during a January friendly against Costa Rica in which the Americans used a B team after training sessions with mostly Major League Soccer players that some fans nicknamed Camp Cupcake. He's become a regular in the Gold Cup and has three goals in his last two games.

"Diego was the example from January, how he is desperate to play for this shirt, for the national team and that is why now he is in the level that he showed," Pochettino said.

Striker Patrick Agyemang also has emerged from January camp to gain a starting berth at the Gold Cup, where many regulars are absent.

'Sometimes you say it's useless, people say it's useless," Pochettino said of the January camp. "It's not useless. I think it's important, important for the national team, important for the team and very important for the country."

Luna scored in the fourth and 15th minutes, the first with his left foot and the second with his right.

"I loved it. It was awesome, man," he said of the environment. "That's what every game should be like and I think that the Guatemalans should be very proud of the fan base that they have and the energy they bring."

Defender Tim Ream, who captained the U.S. in his hometown, said positive results will grow the fanbase.

"None of it's going to happen unless we win, unless we continue to win," he said. "For us, what's the hallmark of a U.S. team? It's fighting and togetherness. That's what we're finding and doing in this tournament. And it's not always going to be perfect. It's not going to always be pretty, but doing that fosters that connection with the fans, with the diehards, with the casuals, with everybody. And as long as we continue to do that, then that culture grows, the feelings grow, and the connections grow."
