Lin-Manuel Miranda will turn 'Hamilton' 10th anniversary into a fundraiser for immigration services

-

FILE -The stage appears at the 76th annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the United Palace theater in New York. (Photo by Charles Sykes/Invision/AP, File)

Lin-Manuel Miranda plans to use the 10th anniversary Broadway performance of his award-winning cultural phenomenon "Hamilton" as a fundraiser for a coalition of nonprofits providing immigration services.

The Aug. 6 performance of "Hamilton" at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre is expected to raise about $3 million for the Immigrants: We Get the Job Done Coalition, 14 nonprofits ranging from the Hispanic Federation and National Immigration Law Center to the Haitian Bridge Alliance and the Tahirih Justice Center. The donation will come from Miranda, the Miranda Family and Miranda Family Fund, and the "Hamilton" cast.

It seemed like a fitting tribute to "Hamilton" and its inspiration, Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, Miranda told The , though he recognizes that Hamilton wouldn't have called himself an immigrant.

"His narrative in our country kind of mirrors that of an immigrant story," Miranda said. "He did not grow up here. He didn't come from England. He came from the Caribbean, escaping harsh circumstances. And he really helped shape this country."

Miranda did exclusively reveal some plans for the special, invite-only "Hamilton" anniversary show and the preshow reception that he will host. Fans already know the possibilities after the special "Hamilton" medley at the Tonys in June. Even the audience will be "stacked," he said, since every actor who has ever performed during the show's Broadway run will be invited to be in the audience to watch the show's current Broadway cast that night. "We're working on something special for the curtain call and another nice special thing after that," Miranda said. "That's about all I can say."

The bulk of the invites have gone to winners selected from a Prizeo sweepstakes, where entrants donated at least $10 to the Immigrants coalition. A few dozen VIP packages, ranging from $2,500 to $10,000, will be available Thursday through the Hispanic Federation, with proceeds also going to the coalition.

"One of America's greatest exports -- at least for me growing up -- was the immigration narrative," Miranda said. "So many people I know… came to this country from somewhere else seeking a better life and then helped make this country better by being here. And I believe that's one of the greatest promises, one of greatest things about the American experiment, and I'll continue to fight for that and support organizations that are helping that cause."

Immigrant-serving nonprofits welcome #Hamilten support

And the organizations that will benefit from the donations generated by the "Hamilton" 10th anniversary, better known as #Hamilten, say the donations and encouragement are sorely needed now.

Since the start of his second term, President Donald Trump swiftly moved to make good on "Mass Deportation Now!" promises from his campaign. His administration has encouraged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to detain and deport people quickly, even to countries where they have never been, in order to rein in illegal immigration.

Hispanic Federation President and CEO Frankie Miranda, no relation to Lin-Manuel Miranda, said he is heartened by the more than 125,000 people who have donated to the "Hamilton" fundraiser. "I think it is the beginning of what could be an incredible movement of philanthropy and individual donors basically saying, 'Enough is enough'," he said. "We have seen it also in the different demonstrations of people around the country where they are expressing their concern and their frustration out in the streets."

Hispanic Federation has already lost millions in federal funding, as the Trump administration cuts support for workplace development initiatives and environmental justice work, Frankie Miranda said. He has also seen some corporations withdraw their financial support because they fear reprisals from the Trump administration. "We need bold ideas like 'Hamilton' where everybody feels that they can stand behind it," he said.

Aarti Kohli, executive director of the Asian Law Caucus, another coalition member, said the donations would help her group continue to provide community legal services to individuals, while also pursuing lawsuits like its challenge to the Trump executive order seeking to strip away birthright citizenship from some children born in the United States.

"At this time, when so many people are afraid to speak out and support vulnerable communities, Lin-Manuel Miranda being willing to use the 'Hamilton' platform just shows real leadership and bravery," Kohli said. "And I'm hoping that more donors will step up and support our sector. We are the firewall between authoritarianism and democracy."

Kica Matos, president of the National Immigration Law Center, said her nonprofit plans to use the donations from the coalition to support its Defending Democracy initiative, which informs immigrants of their rights and uses the law as "a bulwark against unconstitutional actions carried out by this administration."

Matos sees it as a "full circle" moment to use funding generated by "the story of one of our nation's Founding Fathers who himself was an indigent immigrant, who through his own grit, determination and his brilliance, worked his way up." "He was somebody who thought deeply about this new nation's democracy," she added. "What better way to honor Hamilton and to express our gratitude for these resources?"

'Immigrants: We get the job done' was a line that surprisingly resonated

For Lin-Manuel Miranda, the fact that people remain fascinated by "Hamilton" 10 years later also leaves him feeling grateful.

And he remains surprised by the resonance of the line "Immigrants: We get the job done," a line shared in the show by Hamilton and French military officer Marquis de Lafayette at the Battle of Yorktown.

"I thought it was no big deal," he said. "But from the moment it was performed on stage, the audience reaction was so joyous at just the utterance of that simple fact. It's one of the things that just heartens me and gives me hope. In these dark times, it still gets a big cheer."

The cheering still requires the show to add extra measures of music to wait for the audience to calm down before continuing with the song "Yorktown." Miranda attributes it to the fact that so many Americans are only one or two generations away from an immigrant.

"It's the same reason why that No Kings protest vastly outnumbered the military parade happening on the same day," he said. "There are still a lot of people who believe in basic decency and treating people who come here -- often from really tough situations -- with humanity."

Beatrice and Edo wed on July 17, 2020, in a surprise royal wedding attended by her grandparents Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and more royal family members.

Although the couple planned to marry in May 2020, they postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Two months later, Buckingham Palace announced that Princess Beatrice and Edo quietly married in a "small ceremony" at the Royal Chapel of All Saints at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, where Beatrice grew up. The wedding was held under government safety guidelines at the time, and Edo's son from a previous relationship, Christopher Woolf, now 9, served as page boy and his father's best man.

The couple went on to welcome two daughters: Sienna Elizabeth, 3, and Athena Elizabeth Rose, 5 months, who was born preterm in January. Both girls' middle names of Elizabeth are interpreted as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth. Beatrice was known to be close to her grandmother, even wearing the monarch's wedding tiara when she tied the knot.

Beatrice and Edo are not full-time working royals like her first cousin Prince William, but they are frequent fixtures at social and family events on the royal family's calendar. The pair recently attended two days of Royal Ascot together in June, sharing a rare public kiss between horse races.

'Fear is the tool of a tyrant', fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey tells colleagues

-

 • 'Fear is the tool of a tyrant', fired federal prosecutor Maurene Comey tells colleagues

ERIC TUCKER and ALANNA DURKIN RICHER July 18, 2025 at 2:12 AM

FILE - Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey is outside court during the Sean "Diddy" Combs' sex trafficking trial, June 3, 2025. (AP Photo/Ted Shaffrey, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey who as a federal prosecutor in Manhattan worked on cases against Sean "Diddy" Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, said in a note to colleagues that "fear is the tool of a tyrant" and that her firing without reason should fuel "a fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power."

"If a career prosecutor can be fired without reason, fear may seep into the decisions of those who remain," Comey said in the note, which was obtained by The on Thursday. "Do not let that happen. Fear is the tool of a tyrant, wielded to suppress independent thought."

"Instead of fear," she added, "let this moment fuel the fire that already burns at the heart of this place. A fire of righteous indignation at abuses of power. Of commitment to seek justice for victims. Of dedication to truth above all else."

Until her firing Wednesday, Comey had been a veteran lawyer in the Southern District of New York, long considered the most elite of the Justice Department's prosecution offices. Her cases included the sex trafficking prosecution of Epstein, who killed himself behind bars in 2019 as he was awaiting trial, and the recent case against Combs, which ended earlier this month with a mixed verdict.

Her termination represented the latest Justice Department effort to fire lawyers without explanation, a trend that has raised alarm over a disregard for civil service protections designed to prevent terminations for political reasons. The department has also fired a number of prosecutors who worked on cases that have provoked Donald Trump's ire, including some who handled U.S. Capitol riot cases and lawyers and support staff who worked on special counsel Jack Smith's prosecutions of the Republican president.

She was long seen as a potential target given her father's fraught relationship over the last decade with Donald Trump. The Justice Department recently appeared to acknowledge the existence of an investigation into James Comey, though the basis for that inquiry is unclear.

Maurene Comey had most recently been among the prosecutors in the sex trafficking and racketeering case against Combs. The failure to convict the hip-hop mogul of the main charges, while gaining a conviction on prostitution-related charges that will likely result in a prison sentence of just a few years, was viewed by some fellow lawyers as a rare defeat for prosecutors.

But she was successful in numerous other prosecutions, most notably the conviction of Ghislaine Maxwell on sex trafficking charges for helping financier Epstein sexually abuse underage girls. In that case, she delivered a rebuttal argument during closings, as she did in the Combs case.

Her firing comes as Attorney General Pam Bondi faces intense criticism from some members of Trump's base for the Justice Department's decision not to release any more evidence in the government's possession from Epstein's sex trafficking investigation. Some right-wing internet personalities, like Laura Loomer, who have been critical of Bondi's handling of the Epstein files, had been calling for Maurene Comey's firing.

James Comey was the FBI director when Trump took office in 2017, having been appointed by then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat, and serving before that as a senior Justice Department official in Republican President George W. Bush's administration.

But his relationship with Trump was strained from the start. The FBI director resisted a request by Trump at a private dinner to pledge personal loyalty to the president — an overture that so unnerved the FBI director that he documented it in a contemporaneous memorandum.

Trump soon after fired Comey amid an investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump's presidential campaign. That inquiry, later taken over by special counsel Robert Mueller, would ultimately find that while Russia interfered with the 2016 election and the Trump team welcomed the help, there was insufficient evidence to prove a criminal collaboration.

Trump's fury at the older Comey continued long after firing him from the bureau, blaming him for a "hoax" and "witch hunt" that shadowed much of his first term.

Comey disclosed contemporaneous memos of his conversations with Trump to a friend so that their content could be revealed to the media. The following year, Comey published a book calling Trump "ego driven" and likening him to a mafia don. Trump, for his part, has accused Comey and other officials of treason.

More than 140 Ukraine drones enter Russia with Moscow targeted, Defense Ministry says

 • More than 140 Ukraine drones enter Russia with Moscow targeted, Defense Ministry says

DAVID BRENNANJuly 17, 2025 at 9:54 PM

LONDON -- Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces shot down at least 143 Ukrainian drones on Wednesday night through to Thursday afternoon, with at least three craft intercepted over the capital Moscow region.

The attack was Ukraine's largest drone barrage into Russia since it launched 167 craft into the country on July 11, according to data published by Russia's Defense Ministry and analyzed by ABC News.

The latest attack saw drones downed over 11 Russian regions plus annexed Crimea, the ministry said on Thursday.

Temporary flight restrictions were introduced at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport, Kaluga Grabtsevo Airport to the southwest of the capital and Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, according to Telegram posts by Artem Korenyako, a spokesperson for Russia's federal aviation agency Rosaviatsiya.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that at least three drones were shot down on approach to the city. "Emergency services specialists are working at the site of the wreckage," he wrote.

In the southwestern Voronezh region, a drone crashed into a residential building and injured three people, according to a statement published by local Gov. Alexander Gusev on Telegram.

In the western Belgorod region, Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov said three people were killed and 17 injured by drone attacks from Wednesday afternoon through into Thursday morning.

Another person was injured by a drone in the Smolensk region, which sits to the west of Moscow and borders Belarus, Gov. Vasily Anokhin said.

In the Kaluga region to Moscow's southwest, a drone hit a two-story house and a 14-year-old girl was injured by glass fragments, local Gov. Vladislav Shapsha said on Telegram.

MORE: Ukraine braces for Trump's 50-day window amid escalating Russian strikes

Ukraine's air force, meanwhile, said Russia launched 64 drones into the country overnight, of which 41 were shot down or neutralized in flight. The air force said 23 drones impacted in five locations.

As of Thursday, the death toll from a Russian airstrike on the Donetsk city of Dobropillia rose to four, according to local Gov. Vadym Filashkin. Another 27 people were injured in the strike, Filashkin said, which targeted a shopping center in the eastern city.

July has marked an uptick in drone attacks launched by both Russia and Ukraine amid stalled U.S.-led efforts to secure a ceasefire deal to end Russia's 3-year-old full-scale invasion of its neighbor. On Monday, President Donald Trump set Moscow a 50-day ultimatum to agree to a ceasefire, threatening sanctions if it failed to do so.

In June, Russia's Defense Ministry reported downing a total of 2,368 Ukrainian drones, with an average of almost 79 drones per day across the month.

Thus far in July, the Defense Ministry said it has downed 1,533 Ukrainian drones, with a daily average of 90 drones.

The scale of Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine have been increasing since May, according to figures published by the Ukrainian air force and analyzed by ABC News.
