The Department of Justice and FBI's memo on the federal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein has reignited criticism from some of President Donald Trump's supporters over information released in the case involving one of the most infamous sex trafficking criminals in modern history.

The notorious financier, who died by suicide in 2019 while facing federal child sex trafficking charges, has long been rumored to have kept a "client list" of celebrities and politicians, which right-wing influencers have accused authorities of hiding.

A review ordered by Trump-appointed leadership of the Justice Department and the FBI found no evidence that Epstein kept a "client list" of associates whom he blackmailed or conspired with to victimize dozens of women, according to the memo released on July 7. The department also released hours of footage as part of its review, which officials say further confirms Epstein died by suicide -- contradicting conspiracy theories long embraced or spread by allies of Trump and others.

New York State Sex Offender Registry via AP - PHOTO: This photo provided by the New York State Sex Offender Registry shows Jeffrey Epstein, March 28, 2017.

The memo further stated the FBI and DOJ planned to make no future public disclosures related to their review of Epstein's case, stoking outrage among Trump's most vocal supporters.

Most of the criticism in the wake of the memo's release has been directed at mixed messaging from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, who had previously suggested an alleged Epstein "client list" was sitting on her desk. Past statements made by FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino that stoked conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein's death have also resurfaced amid the fallout. Bongino has suggested to allies he may resign following days of growing outrage, according to multiple sources.

Here's a timeline of the fallout.

MORE: DOJ, FBI review finds no Jeffrey Epstein 'client list,' confirms suicide: Memo

2023: Bongino and Patel on Epstein case

Before joining the DOJ, both Patel and Bongino had suggested that the federal government was shielding information regarding the Epstein case.

In an episode of his podcast from 2023, Bongino told listeners, "That Jeffrey Epstein story is a big deal. ... Please do not let the story go," blaming people in the "Washington swamp who are not telling you the truth."

In December 2023, Patel claimed to conservative pundit Benny Johnson that Congress blocked the release of Epstein's alleged clients "because of who's on that list."

Feb. 21, 2025: Bondi suggests there's an Epstein 'client list'

During an interview with Fox News, when asked whether the DOJ would release "the list of Jeffrey Epstein's clients," Attorney General Bondi responded, "It's sitting on my desk right now to review. That's been a directive by President Trump. I'm reviewing that."

Evan Vucci/AP - PHOTO: Attorney General Pam Bondi listens as President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, July 8, 2025.

Feb. 26, 2025: Bondi promises to release 'a lot of names'

Bondi told Fox News that the Justice Department planned to publish "a lot of flight logs" and "a lot of names" related to Epstein.

Feb. 27, 2025: DOJ releases '1st phase' of Epstein files

Bondi handed out binders with Epstein case files to a group of pro-Trump social media influencers at the White House ahead of their public release. The files ultimately contained little new information. They largely consisted of information previously made public through criminal or civil litigation surrounding Epstein and his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell -- leading senior White House staffers to question why Bondi even teased the release of new information in the first place.

The release also outraged some supporters of the president, who had been promised that more details would be made public.

Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and one of Trump's most vocal supporters, blasted the handling of the release, writing on X at the time: "The Epstein files were released in an unprofessional manner with paid, partisan social media influencers to curate their binders for us. I can't trust anything in the binder. Neither should you."

Bondi subsequently accused the FBI's New York office of withholding information about the Epstein investigation, but did not specify what material she believed the office to be withholding.

May 7, 2025: Bondi claims there are 'tens of thousands' of Epstein videos

During remarks at the White House, Bondi claimed the delay in publicly releasing scores of records associated with federal probes into Epstein was due to the review of "tens of thousands" of videos within the FBI's possession showing potential pornography of minors.

July 7, 2025: Epstein memo released

The DOJ and FBI released a memo, in which both agencies said their review determined there was "no incriminating 'client list'" and "no credible evidence found that Epstein blackmailed prominent individuals as part of his actions."

According to the FBI and DOJ review, no further charges are expected in connection with their probes into Epstein, as investigators "did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties."

The department also released hours of footage as part of its review, which officials say further confirms Epstein died by suicide while in custody in his jail cell in Manhattan in 2019.

In explaining their determination not to release further records from the investigation, the DOJ memo states that one of the government's "highest priorities is combatting child exploitation and bringing justice to victims," before adding, "Perpetuating unfounded theories about Epstein serves neither of those ends."

July 7, 2025: Pushback from far-right Trump supporters

Following the memo's release, Loomer called on Bondi to resign "for lying to the American People." Pro-Trump influencers the Hodgetwins also called on Trump to fire Bondi -- as did American conservative political commentator Liz Wheeler.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon questioned if the administration is as transparent as it claims it would be during his popular "War Room" show. Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones accused the Trump administration of being part of a cover-up.

MORE: Trump supporters angry over Justice Department's Epstein memo

July 8, 2025: Bondi clarifies past comments

During a Cabinet meeting, Bondi clarified past comments she made regarding the Epstein case in the wake of the memo's release, including regarding the "client list."

"In February, I did an interview on Fox, and it's been getting a lot of attention because I said I was asked a question about the client list, and my response was, it's sitting on my desk to be reviewed, meaning the file along with the JFK, MLK files as well. That's what I meant by that," Bondi said.

Regarding the "tens of thousands" of videos, Bondi said they "turned out to be child porn downloaded by that disgusting Jeffrey Epstein."

Andrew Harnik/Getty Images - PHOTO: Attorney General Pam Bondi speaks during a cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington, July 8, 2025.

During the same Cabinet meeting, Trump had interrupted prior to Bondi's response, saying, "Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein? This guy's been talked about for years. You're asking-- we have Texas, we have this, we have all of the things. And are people still talking about this guy, this creep? That is unbelievable."

July 11, 2025: Speculation on Bongino's future

In the days following the memo's release, Bongino has expressed growing disagreement with how the announcement was handled, suggesting to allies he may resign following days of growing outrage publicly voiced by Trump's most ardent supporters, according to sources.

Earlier in the week, Bongino had a fiery confrontation with Bondi over how she handled the review of the Epstein files and the memo, the sources said.

Bongino did not respond to repeated requests for comment from ABC News.

In a post on X, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said he personally worked with Bongino and Patel to craft the memo.

"All of us signed off on the contents of the memo and the conclusions stated in the memo," Blanche said. "The suggestion by anyone that there was any daylight between the FBI and DOJ leadership on this memo's composition and release is patently false."

July 12, 2025: Trump defends Bondi

Trump defended Bondi in a social media post amid the pushback from some in his MAGA base over the handling of the Epstein probe.

Trump praised Bondi for doing a "fantastic job" and urged his "boys" and "gals" to stop criticizing her.

"We have a PERFECT Administration, THE TALK OF THE WORLD, and 'selfish people' are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein," Trump said, encouraging unity within the Republican Party.

July 12, 2025: Patel shuts down rumors about leaving the FBI

Patel shut down rumors that he is potentially thinking about leaving the FBI.

"t's an honor to serve the President of the United States @realDonaldTrump -- and I'll continue to do so for as long as he calls on me," he tweeted.

The tweet followed a report in a conservative outlet that suggested he was considering leaving if Bongino left.

Andrew Harnik/Getty Images - PHOTO: Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel speaks during a the Senate Appropriations Committee hearing in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, May 8, 2025.

July 13, 2025: Trump says Bongino 'in good shape'

Asked by reporters if Bongino was still his FBI deputy director, Trump said, "I think so," and said Bongino was in "good shape."

"I spoke to him today, Dan Bongino, very good guy. I've known him a long time," Trump said.

July 14, 2025: Lara Trump says she thinks there will be 'more transparency'

Lara Trump, President Trump's daughter-in-law and a Fox News host, told Johnson on the MAGA influencer's show that she believed there did need to be "more transparency" regarding the administration's handling of the Epstein case and said she believed "that that will happen," predicting more information would be released "sooner rather than later."

July 14, 2025: Democratic leader weighs in

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., addressed Trump's handling of the Epstein controversy, saying, "There are only two things that are possible here."

"Option one, Donald Trump, Pam Bondi and the MAGA extremists intentionally lied to the American people for years about the Jeffrey Epstein situation," he said at a news conference in the Capitol.

"Option two is that, in fact, there's reason for the American people to be concerned as it relates to what information has not been released that could be damaging to the Trump administration and the friends and family of the Trump administration and their billionaire, corrupt supporters. And so, they're actively engaging in a cover-up," he continued.

Jeffries said if the Trump administration is "hiding something," Congress should "actually work hard to try to uncover the truth for the American people."

July 14, 2025: Texas Dem calls for release of all unclassified files

Texas Democratic Rep. Marc Veasey introduced a resolution calling on the Trump administration to "immediately release" all unclassified Epstein files and evidence -- becoming the first House Democrat to push for legislative action amid a growing call from MAGA Republicans for the release.

The resolution also calls on the DOJ and the FBI to submit a full report related to Epstein's operations and urges relevant House committees to investigate any delay of the files' release.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticizes Vice President Vance over his trip to Disneyland

Fernando Cervantes Jr., USA TODAY July 15, 2025 at 12:13 AM

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Vice President JD Vance found themselves at odds again this weekend after Vance visited Disneyland in California with his family.

The two traded blows over X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday.

Newsom criticized the vice president's trip to his state amid rising tensions between the governor and the Trump administration, which has been deploying the military to California to assist in immigration raids.

"JD is back in California. He won't take the time to debate and defend gutting our Medicaid system, taking away kids' school meals, militarizing America's streets, or adding trillions to the debt," Newsom said. "Instead, he's off to Disneyland. Probably to detain Mickey Mouse at this rate."

The California Governor referenced a previous post where he challenged Vance to a debate, to which the vice president declined to respond.

Vance responded to Newsom's latest post on Sunday, saying, "Had a great time, thanks."

Not the first exchange

The exchange was far from the first time Newsom and Vance found themselves at loggerheads online.

Last month, as the Trump administration deployed National Guard troops to crack down on protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles, the President suggested to reporters that Newsom should be arrested.

The San Francisco native criticized the president's comments in a social media post.

"The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America," he wrote on X. "I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican, this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism."

Vice President Vance joined the fray at the time as well, writing, "Do your job. That's all we're asking."

China's economy set to slow in Q2 as pressure from US tariffs mounts

 • China's economy set to slow in Q2 as pressure from US tariffs mounts

Kevin YaoJuly 15, 2025 at 12:03 AM

By Kevin Yao

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's economy is likely to have cooled in the second quarter after a solid start to the year, as trade tensions and a prolonged property downturn drag on demand, raising pressure on policymakers to roll out additional stimulus to underpin growth.

The world's No. 2 economy has so far avoided a sharp slowdown in part due to a fragile U.S.-China trade truce and policy support, but markets are bracing for a weaker second half as exports lose momentum, prices continue to fall, and consumer confidence remains low.

Data due Tuesday is expected to show gross domestic product (GDP) grew 5.1% year-on-year in April–June, slowing from 5.4% in the first quarter, according to a Reuters poll. The projected pace would still exceed the 4.7% forecast in a Reuters poll in April and remains broadly in line with the official full-year target of around 5%.

"While growth has been resilient year-to-date, we still expect it to soften in the second half of the year, due to the payback of front-loaded exports, ongoing negative deflationary feedback loop, and the impact of tariffs on direct exports to the U.S. and the global trade cycle," analysts at Morgan Stanley said in a note.

"The third-quarter growth could slow to 4.5% or lower, while Q4 faces unfavourable base effect, putting the annual growth target at risk," the analysts said. They expect Beijing to introduce a 0.5–1 trillion yuan ($69.7 billion-$139.5 billion) supplementary budget from late in the third quarter.

China's exports regained some momentum in June while imports rebounded, as factories rushed out shipments to capitalise on a fragile tariff truce between Beijing and Washington ahead of a looming August deadline.

GDP data is due on Tuesday at 0200 GMT. Separate data on June activity is expected to show both industrial output and retail sales slowing.

On a quarterly basis, the economy is forecast to have expanded 0.9% in the second quarter, slowing from 1.2% in January-March, the poll showed.

China's 2025 GDP growth is forecast to cool to 4.6% - falling short of the official goal - from last year's 5.0% and ease even further to 4.2% in 2026, according to the poll.

Investors are closely watching for signs of fresh stimulus at the upcoming Politburo meeting due in late July, which is likely to shape economic policy for the remainder of the year.

Analysts polled by Reuters expect a 10-basis point cut in the seven-day reverse repo rate - the central bank's key policy rate - in the fourth quarter, along with a similar cut to the benchmark loan prime rate (LPR).

Beijing has ramped up infrastructure spending and consumer subsidies, alongside steady monetary easing. In May, the central bank cut interest rates and injected liquidity as part of broader efforts to cushion the economy from U.S. President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.

But China observers and analysts say stimulus alone may not be enough to tackle entrenched deflationary pressures, with producer prices in June falling at their fastest pace in nearly two years.

Expectations are growing that China could accelerate supply-side reforms to curb excess industrial capacity and find new ways to boost domestic demand.

It's a stiff challenge, analysts say, as Chinese leaders face a delicate balancing act in their quest to cut production while maintaining employment stability in the face of a worsening labour market outlook.

Rocket Lab has surged to a new all-time high today after Citi published bullish coverage on the stock.

Citi raised its price target on Rocket Lab stock from $33 per share to $55 per share -- implying substantial upside even after today's gains.

Rocket Lab is surging today after a major investment firm issued a major upward revision for its price target. The company's share price is now up roughly 66% year to date and is setting a new all-time high in today's trading.

Citi's bullish coverage pushes Rocket Lab stock to fresh record high

Citi published new coverage on Rocket Lab stock before the market opened this morning and maintained a buy rating on the stock. The investment firm also raised its one-year price target on the stock from $33 per share to $50 per share.

Citi's analysts are seeing strong sales momentum in the broader aerospace and defense sector, and they expect Rocket Lab will be a strong beneficiary of the trend. The stock is also seeing bullish momentum in conjunction with investors betting that the Federal Reserve is now on track to serve up multiple cuts to the benchmark interest rate this year -- with a reduction for the base rate potentially arriving as early as this month. As of this writing, their new price target still suggests additional upside of 18%.

What's next for Rocket Lab?

Rocket Lab is seeing strong launch demand for commercial satellites for telecommunications and imaging, and it also has a long growth runway in the defense sector. The space industry appears to be taking off in a big way, which has helped support big gains in the company's valuation.

Rocket Lab has a market capitalization of roughly $19.5 billion and is trading at approximately 34 times this year's expected sales. While that growth-dependent valuation profile comes with substantial risk, it's possible that the company is still in the early stages of a massive long-term expansion trajectory.

The US has a plan to breed millions of flies and drop them from planes. Here's why

-

 • The US has a plan to breed millions of flies and drop them from planes. Here's why

Kameryn Griesser, CNNJuly 14, 2025 at 7:37 PM

New World screwworms are the flesh-eating, larval form of Cochliomyia hominivorax, a species of blow fly. - Michael Miller/Texas A&M AgriLife

Hundreds of millions of flies dropping from planes in the sky might sound like a horrible nightmare, but experts say such a swarm could be the livestock industry's best defense against a flesh-eating threat poised to invade the southwestern border of the United States.

An outbreak of New World screwworms — the larval form of a type of fly that's known to nest in the wounds of warm-blooded animals and slowly eat them alive — has been spreading across Central America since early 2023, with infestations recorded in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador. Most Central American countries hadn't seen an outbreak in 20 years.

The fly reached southern Mexico in November, sparking concern among US agricultural industry officials and triggering the closure of several border-area cattle, horse and bison trading ports.

It wouldn't be the first time the US has had to battle these invasive bugs. The nation mostly eradicated the New World screwworm populations in the 1960s and 1970s by breeding sterilized males of the species and dispersing them from planes to mate with wild, female flies.

The strategy — essentially fighting flies with flies — slowly degraded the insects' populations by preventing them from laying more eggs. Now, as the insects continue to spread north officials are hoping the approach could work again.

However, today only one facility in Panama breeds sterilized New World screwworms for dispersal, and hundreds of millions more sterile flies are needed to slow the outbreak, according to a June 17 letter from 80 US lawmakers.

The next day, the US Department of Agriculture announced plans to open a "fly factory" in a yet to be determined town near the Texas-Mexico border. But the process of defeating the screwworm may not be quick — or inexpensive.

The adult fly form of the New World screwworm has a blue-green metallic exoskeleton. - Michael Miller/Texas A&M AgriLifeScrewworm dangers

New World screwworms are the parasitic larva of a metallic blue blow fly species called Cochliomyia hominivorax. Unlike all other blow flies native to the Western Hemisphere, the New World screwworm feeds on the flesh of living animals, rather than dead ones, said Dr. Phillip Kaufman, a professor and head of the department of entomology at Texas A&M University.

The flesh-eating maggots go for most warm-blooded animals, including horses and cows. They have also been known to infect domestic pets and even humans in rare cases, Kaufman said.

"After mating, the female fly finds a living host, lands on its wound, and will lay up to 200 to 300 eggs," Kaufman explained. "After 12 to 24 hours, those eggs all hatch, and they immediately start burrowing and feeding on the tissue of that animal, causing very, very large wounds to form."

After the larvae feed on the tissue with their sharp mouth hooks for several days, they drop from the animal and burrow into the ground to emerge later as fully grown adult flies, according to Thomas Lansford, the deputy executive director and assistant state veterinarian for the Texas Animal Health Commission.

Since the outbreak began in 2023, there have been more than 90,000 New World screwworm infestations reported, according to a USDA spokesperson.

Animal health worker Eduardo Lugo treats the wounds of a cow at the Chihuahua Regional Livestock Union in Nuevo Palomas, Mexico. - Jose Luis Gonzalez/Reuters

Treatment for infested cattle often involves cleaning, antiseptic treatment and coverings for the wounds, Lansford said.

If left untreated, the flies can kill an animal in a matter of one to two weeks and spread to others, posing a threat to the livelihood of ranchers.

"It's a daily chore to provide those inspections to our livestock, just to make sure they're not infested," said Stephen Diebel, a rancher and the first vice president of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. "We know the incredible economic impact an infestation would cause."

There are no known vaccinations or effective repellant methods to prevent infestation, Diebel said. Instead, during warmer months, ranchers should avoid branding, tagging and other procedures that create potential entry points for the screwworms in livestock, he recommended. The tropical fly is less active in the winter.

While regional cattle trading is thought to be a major way the fly populations travel, Diebel said infestations can also affect wildlife such as deer, birds and rodents, making surveillance of the parasite's spread even more challenging.

Just like a caterpillar goes into a cocoon before becoming a butterfly, the New World screwworm becomes a black, pill-sized pupa before emerging as an adult fly, Kaufman explained.

In a sterile fly production facility, the pupae are subjected to high-energy gamma rays that break down the DNA of the males, damaging their sex chromosomes, according to the USDA. The result: impotent adult flies that cause female mates to lay unfertilized eggs.

The amount of radiation the male flies are exposed to does not pose a danger to animals or humans, according to the USDA. But since the female flies only mate one time in their short, 20-day lifespan, once populations are exposed to sterile males, the populations die out over the course of months or years, depending on the size of the outbreak.

While it is unclear how dispersal would work in the US in the event of an outbreak, Kaufman said the adult flies are typically loaded into temperature-controlled containers and dropped from planes. However, there's no need to panic about the fly drops coming to a suburb near you, he said — they usually target sparsely populated rural areas, since the flies have no interest in urban environments.

At the Panama–United States Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of Screwworm Infestation in Livestock (COPEG) facility, about 100 million sterilized flies are produced and dispersed aerially in affected regions each week.

Currently, the dispersal efforts have been focused in the southern regions of Mexico and throughout Central America, where cases of infestation have been reported, according to COPEG's website.

The new US dispersal facility is expected to be located at the Moore Air Base in Hidalgo County, Texas, and to cost $8.5 million, per the release. The location and price tag of the production facility, or the "fly factory" itself, has not been revealed, but lawmakers estimate it could cost around $300 million.

In addition to the new sterile fly facilities, the USDA also announced $21 million plans to renovate an old fly factory in Mexico by late 2025.

While the plans are expensive, it's a price worth paying to save the multibillion-dollar livestock industry, Diebel said.

'When you offset the $300 million to the $10 billion of economic impact these flies would have, it's an easy trade-off to understand," Diebel said. "Having (a domestic production facility) here is super important … to control the distribution of those sterile flies more efficiently."

Shortly after the June 18 announcement, the USDA shared plans to begin reopening livestock trading ports in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico that closed last year, citing "good progress" in surveillance and sterile fly dispersal efforts throughout Mexico.

COPEG did not immediately respond to request for comment on further details about the current progress of the US dispersal initiatives.
