Hundreds of millions of flies dropping from planes in the sky might sound like a horrible nightmare, but experts say such a swarm could be the livestock industry's best defense against a flesh-eating threat poised to invade the southwestern border of the United States.

An outbreak of New World screwworms — the larval form of a type of fly that's known to nest in the wounds of warm-blooded animals and slowly eat them alive — has been spreading across Central America since early 2023, with infestations recorded in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and El Salvador. Most Central American countries hadn't seen an outbreak in 20 years.

The fly reached southern Mexico in November, sparking concern among US agricultural industry officials and triggering the closure of several border-area cattle, horse and bison trading ports.

It wouldn't be the first time the US has had to battle these invasive bugs. The nation mostly eradicated the New World screwworm populations in the 1960s and 1970s by breeding sterilized males of the species and dispersing them from planes to mate with wild, female flies.

The strategy — essentially fighting flies with flies — slowly degraded the insects' populations by preventing them from laying more eggs. Now, as the insects continue to spread north officials are hoping the approach could work again.

However, today only one facility in Panama breeds sterilized New World screwworms for dispersal, and hundreds of millions more sterile flies are needed to slow the outbreak, according to a June 17 letter from 80 US lawmakers.

The next day, the US Department of Agriculture announced plans to open a "fly factory" in a yet to be determined town near the Texas-Mexico border. But the process of defeating the screwworm may not be quick — or inexpensive.

The adult fly form of the New World screwworm has a blue-green metallic exoskeleton. - Michael Miller/Texas A&M AgriLifeScrewworm dangers

New World screwworms are the parasitic larva of a metallic blue blow fly species called Cochliomyia hominivorax. Unlike all other blow flies native to the Western Hemisphere, the New World screwworm feeds on the flesh of living animals, rather than dead ones, said Dr. Phillip Kaufman, a professor and head of the department of entomology at Texas A&M University.

The flesh-eating maggots go for most warm-blooded animals, including horses and cows. They have also been known to infect domestic pets and even humans in rare cases, Kaufman said.

"After mating, the female fly finds a living host, lands on its wound, and will lay up to 200 to 300 eggs," Kaufman explained. "After 12 to 24 hours, those eggs all hatch, and they immediately start burrowing and feeding on the tissue of that animal, causing very, very large wounds to form."

After the larvae feed on the tissue with their sharp mouth hooks for several days, they drop from the animal and burrow into the ground to emerge later as fully grown adult flies, according to Thomas Lansford, the deputy executive director and assistant state veterinarian for the Texas Animal Health Commission.

Since the outbreak began in 2023, there have been more than 90,000 New World screwworm infestations reported, according to a USDA spokesperson.

Animal health worker Eduardo Lugo treats the wounds of a cow at the Chihuahua Regional Livestock Union in Nuevo Palomas, Mexico. - Jose Luis Gonzalez/Reuters

Treatment for infested cattle often involves cleaning, antiseptic treatment and coverings for the wounds, Lansford said.

If left untreated, the flies can kill an animal in a matter of one to two weeks and spread to others, posing a threat to the livelihood of ranchers.

"It's a daily chore to provide those inspections to our livestock, just to make sure they're not infested," said Stephen Diebel, a rancher and the first vice president of the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. "We know the incredible economic impact an infestation would cause."

There are no known vaccinations or effective repellant methods to prevent infestation, Diebel said. Instead, during warmer months, ranchers should avoid branding, tagging and other procedures that create potential entry points for the screwworms in livestock, he recommended. The tropical fly is less active in the winter.

While regional cattle trading is thought to be a major way the fly populations travel, Diebel said infestations can also affect wildlife such as deer, birds and rodents, making surveillance of the parasite's spread even more challenging.

A worker drops New World screwworm fly larvae into a tray at a facility that breeds sterile flies in Pacora, Panama. - COPEG/APFighting flies with flies: How it works

Just like a caterpillar goes into a cocoon before becoming a butterfly, the New World screwworm becomes a black, pill-sized pupa before emerging as an adult fly, Kaufman explained.

In a sterile fly production facility, the pupae are subjected to high-energy gamma rays that break down the DNA of the males, damaging their sex chromosomes, according to the USDA. The result: impotent adult flies that cause female mates to lay unfertilized eggs.

The amount of radiation the male flies are exposed to does not pose a danger to animals or humans, according to the USDA. But since the female flies only mate one time in their short, 20-day lifespan, once populations are exposed to sterile males, the populations die out over the course of months or years, depending on the size of the outbreak.

While it is unclear how dispersal would work in the US in the event of an outbreak, Kaufman said the adult flies are typically loaded into temperature-controlled containers and dropped from planes. However, there's no need to panic about the fly drops coming to a suburb near you, he said — they usually target sparsely populated rural areas, since the flies have no interest in urban environments.

A photo from 1960 shows US workers preparing sterile flies for dispersal. - USDA National Agricultural LibraryA pricey battle

At the Panama–United States Commission for the Eradication and Prevention of Screwworm Infestation in Livestock (COPEG) facility, about 100 million sterilized flies are produced and dispersed aerially in affected regions each week.

Currently, the dispersal efforts have been focused in the southern regions of Mexico and throughout Central America, where cases of infestation have been reported, according to COPEG's website.

The new US dispersal facility is expected to be located at the Moore Air Base in Hidalgo County, Texas, and to cost $8.5 million, per the release. The location and price tag of the production facility, or the "fly factory" itself, has not been revealed, but lawmakers estimate it could cost around $300 million.

In addition to the new sterile fly facilities, the USDA also announced $21 million plans to renovate an old fly factory in Mexico by late 2025.

While the plans are expensive, it's a price worth paying to save the multibillion-dollar livestock industry, Diebel said.

'When you offset the $300 million to the $10 billion of economic impact these flies would have, it's an easy trade-off to understand," Diebel said. "Having (a domestic production facility) here is super important … to control the distribution of those sterile flies more efficiently."

Shortly after the June 18 announcement, the USDA shared plans to begin reopening livestock trading ports in Arizona, Texas and New Mexico that closed last year, citing "good progress" in surveillance and sterile fly dispersal efforts throughout Mexico.

COPEG did not immediately respond to request for comment on further details about the current progress of the US dispersal initiatives.

Editor's Note: This story has been to reflect the latest screwworm infestation numbers from COPEG.

Last month, it was revealed that the Kelce family matriarch will be joining the season 4 cast of the popular competition show, The Traitors. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the American Century celebrity golf tournament over the weekend, Jason, 37, shared how he feels about his mom's new gig.

"She's so sweet and so kind," he said of the 72-year-old. "I feel like in that show, you have to be manipulative and cunning, and you've gotta be cutthroat. So I don't know, we'll see. I'm anxious to see how she did."

"I guess I'm gonna have to watch the next season of Traitors!" she gushed. "That's right, Donna Kelce, my mother-in-law, is on this coming season of Traitors. Have I watched Traitors? Not a whole season. Am I excited to watch Donna? 1000% Imma cheer her on until the end of time."

"I'm not gonna lie, though, her innocence and honesty is working against her … or for her," Kylie noted, agreeing with her husband's concern. "Oh, if she's a faithful, maybe it works for her. Oh! We're all on the edge of our seat. I'm excited. Come on, Donna, win it!"

Donna's ex-husband, Ed Kelce, also joked, "[I] Haven't got a f------ clue" how she will do on the show during a previous conversation with Jason and Travis.

You probably know the usual ways to get rich, which somehow involves earning more and investing gobs of money. But what if there was a smarter way to leverage your existing resources to grow your wealth this year?

Trending Now: How To Build Wealth in 2025 — 10 Smart Steps That Work

Explore More: 6 Subtly Genius Moves All Wealthy People Make With Their Money

While the following tips aren't exactly new, they may surprise you as to how much of a difference it makes when it comes to getting your assets to earn more money.

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

Leverage the Free Space in Your Home

Yes, there are people out there that are happy to pay you to use part of your home. Some websites can help you rent out your home or certain areas on your property if you have unique features or characteristics.

Production companies, for instance, may want to rent out certain areas for a movie or TV show. It may be cheaper for them to rent your home rather than build out their own set. For you, the extra money coming in for an area you may barely use could help you get richer.

Don't have a "unique" property, but have extra space in your house?

Check Out: I'm a Self-Made Millionaire — 6 Steps I Took To Become Rich on an Average Salary

You can get creative, like renting out a spare room for someone's home office during the day, or someone can use your basement as a storage unit. You could even charge some to park their RV or boat in your yard for a fee.

Essentially, you're earning money without doing much more work. The extra funds could be used towards investment contributions. Or, it could help you with additional mortgage principal payments to help you get debt-free faster.

Switch Jobs

Changing jobs could get you a higher salary bump. While the potential pay increase isn't as high as it was a few years ago during the "Great Resignation," according to ADP, workers in March 2025 could get an average of a 1.9% bump in year over year pay for those that switched jobs.

Sure, it doesn't seem like much, but switching jobs could offer you benefits that are beyond a higher salary. Think about if this new company offers better opportunities to move to higher positions, or perks like employee stock options. Even if it's a company match on a 401(k) plan, it's way better than not having a retirement plan at all from a current employer.

Reevaluate Your Risk Tolerance

Think of risk tolerance as your comfort level with how much you're willing to handle it when it comes to earning investment gains. The more potential to earn a higher return on your investments, the more risk there is for losses.

In general, if you have a longer time horizon when you'll need to rely on your investments, the more risk you can be. As such, you may be able to earn a higher return over time, getting you closer to the coveted millionaire status and beyond.

While having a lower risk tolerance can help expose you to less risk of losing money, you may also not earn as much as you could. Taking the time to evaluate how much risk is right for your situation when it comes to your investment portfolio could help you get richer with your returns.

Fire Your Financial Advisor

No, this isn't to suggest that you should never work with a financial professional or actually fire the advisor you're currently working with.

What we're suggesting is that you take a careful look at what you're paying in fees and assess whether it's worth it. Or, whether their advice is actually beneficial to you.

For instance, some financial advisors charge a fee that's based on a percentage of your investments. Even if it seems low, like 1%, that could have a compounding effect on your wealth in the long run. In other words, you could take a more DIY approach to your investments or invest in securities that have lower fees.

The difference could be hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Also take a look at whether the financial advisor receives a commission from the investments they sell you. If so, this person may not act in your best financial interest and could be costing you more than you initially bargained. By working with a professional that charges lower fees and suggests investments where you're not paying sky-high management fees, you're on your way to earning much more wealth.

The report, due Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. ET, comes as investors closely monitor whether President Trump's tariffs are starting to filter through to what consumers pay, even as inflation data has so far remained more resilient than expected.

According to Bloomberg data, headline CPI is expected to have increased 2.6% year over year in June, up from a 2.4% rise in May. On a monthly basis, prices are forecast to climb 0.3%, marking an acceleration from the 0.1% gain the prior month.

On a "core" basis, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, the annual inflation rate for June is expected to come in at 2.9%, a slight pickup from May's 2.8%. Core prices are also projected to climb 0.3% month over month, outpacing the previous 0.1% rise seen in May.

In May, falling car and apparel prices, categories seen as early indicators of tariff impacts, contributed to a cooler-than-expected core CPI reading. But economists expect those trends to reverse in June, potentially pushing core inflation higher.

The report lands amid renewed trade tensions between the US and other countries. President Trump has unveiled new letters to over 20 countries outlining tariffs ranging from 20% to 50%, including a 35% duty on Canadian goods and 30% tariffs on imports from Mexico and the European Union.

He has also floated sweeping 15% to 20% tariffs on most trading partners. The EU, in response, is scrambling to negotiate while preparing potential countermeasures.

The back-and-forth raises fresh questions about the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting path. Markets still expect the central bank to hold rates steady at its policy meeting in two weeks, largely due to uncertainties on how tariffs will trickle through to prices.

"The June CPI report is likely to show inflation beginning to strengthen again, albeit not enough to alarm Fed officials at this juncture," Wells Fargo economist Sarah House wrote in a note.

"The next three months will mark a key stretch of inflation data," she added, noting that while inventory front-running has so far limited price hikes, "it will become increasingly difficult for businesses to absorb higher import duties as pre-tariff stockpiles dwindle."

Wells Fargo expects core goods prices to continue rising in the second half of the year as those buffers wear off, although House noted the pass-through to consumers may be limited: "Amid a softer labor market and services inflation dissipating a bit more, the pickup in core inflation stemming from tariffs is likely to look more like a bump than a spike."

Bank of America economists Stephen Juneau and Jeseo Park also expect core CPI inflation to accelerate, driven by a rebound in used car prices and broad-based hikes likely linked to tariffs. On the services side, they see inflation firming due to rising medical costs, travel-related prices, and stronger shelter price increases.

And Goldman Sachs echoed similar concerns, writing, "Going forward, tariffs will likely provide a somewhat larger boost to monthly inflation," while projecting core CPI gains of 0.3% to 0.4% in the coming months.

The firm expects a sharp pickup in core goods inflation but sees only limited effects on services. Still, Goldman anticipates inflation pressures to ease later this year as housing and labor market dynamics cool.
