COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Danish police said Thursday they have deployed officers to the Israeli embassy in the Nordic country's capital to examine a suspicious package.

Copenhagen police wrote on X that "we are present at the Israeli embassy, where we are investigating a shipment received."

They added that "we currently have no further information."

Danish public broadcaster DR showed photos of several police and emergency vehicles near the embassy, including what they reported was a hazmat emergency response team vehicle.

Police wrote on X that they had blocked roads near the embassy.

Anders Frederiksen, duty chief at the Copenhagen Police, told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that "ordinary citizens in the area should not be worried."

A spokesperson reached by phone at the press department of the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen said he could not comment on the situation.

Security officials in many European countries have increased surveillance and protection of Israeli and Jewish institutions after a 12-day war broke out between Israel and Iran in June.

Last week, security officers arrested a man in the Danish city of Aarhus on suspicion of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Germany for Iranian intelligence.

Prosecutors said the man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on "Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals" in Berlin. They didn't elaborate.

He spied on three properties in June, "presumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets," prosecutors said.

German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that "if this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation," adding in a statement that "the protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government."

Germany has requested the extradition of the suspect.

US House Republicans head toward final vote on Trump's sweeping tax-cut bill

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives advanced President Donald Trump's massive tax-cut and spending bill toward a final yes-or-no vote early on Thursday morning, appearing to overcome internal party divisions over its cost.

During a marathon overnight session, lawmakers cleared a final procedural hurdle needed to begin debate on the bill in a 219-213 vote at around 3:30 a.m. ET (0730 GMT). It was not clear when they would hold a final vote.

As dawn broke in Washington, the top House Democrat, Hakeem Jeffries, was well into what was turning into an hours-long speech, calling out Republican lawmakers by name as he blasted the package as a giveaway to the wealthiest Americans.

"This one big, ugly bill--this reckless Republican budget -- this disgusting abomination is not about improving the quality of life of the American people," he said, a scathing reference to Trump's name for his signature legislation: One Big Beautiful Bill.

"The focus of this bill, the justification for all of the cuts that will hurt everyday Americans is to provide massive tax breaks for billionaires."

His remarks had echoes of Democratic Senator Cory Booker's record-setting April speech that accused Trump of "recklessly" challenging the nation's democratic institutions.

Democrats are united in opposition to the bill, but on their own lack the votes to stop the bill in the chamber, which is controlled 220-212 by Trump's Republicans.

Republicans can afford no more than three defections to get a final bill passed.

The past two weeks have shown deep Republican divides on the bill, which would add $3.4 trillion to the nation's $36.2 trillion in debt and make major cuts to social programs including Medicaid.

Republican lawmakers have long railed against the growth of the debt, which has continued over the past two decades regardless of which party was in control in Washington.

A handful of Republican holdouts have objected to the bill. One, Senator Thom Tillis, opted not to seek re-election after voting against it. Nonetheless, Trump has succeeded in getting the votes to advance the legislation at each step of the way.

Votes in the House were held open for hours on Wednesday during the day and overnight as House Speaker Mike Johnson and the White House talked with reluctant members.

Johnson expressed optimism on Wednesday night, saying lawmakers had a "long, productive day" discussing the issues. He praised Trump for making phone calls to the holdouts through the early hours of Thursday morning.

"There couldn't be a more engaged and involved president," Johnson told reporters.

The Senate passed the legislation by the narrowest possible margin on Tuesday after intense debate on the bill's hefty price tag and $900 million in cuts to the Medicaid healthcare program for low-income Americans.

Any changes made by the House would require another Senate vote, which would make it all but impossible to meet Trump's self-imposed deadline of getting the legislation approved by the July 4 holiday.

The bill would raise the nation's debt ceiling by $5 trillion, a necessary step to avoid a devastating default later this summer.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that almost 12 million people could lose health insurance as a result of the bill.

The legislation contains most of Trump's top domestic priorities.

It would extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, cut health and food safety net programs, fund Trump's immigration crackdown, and zero out many green-energy incentives. It also includes a $5 trillion increase in the nation's debt ceiling, which lawmakers must address in the coming months or risk a devastating default.

Amundi warns US stablecoin policy could destabilise global payments system

 • Amundi warns US stablecoin policy could destabilise global payments system

Marc JonesJuly 3, 2025 at 6:04 AM

By Marc Jones

LONDON (Reuters) -Europe's largest asset manager has raised concerns that a boom in dollar-backed stablecoins in the wake of the United States' GENIUS Act could cause a major shift in money flows that destabilises the global payment system.

The U.S. Senate passed the GENIUS Act a bill last month to create a regulatory framework for the U.S.-dollar-pegged cryptotokens.

It is expected to be passed by the House of Representatives and approved by President Donald Trump, leaving other countries worried about a wave of so-called 'dollarization' of economies if their own populations buy them.

"It could be genius, or it could be evil," Amundi Asset Management's chief investment officer Vincent Mortier told Reuters, voicing his concerns about the U.S. act.

JPMorgan expects the amount of stablecoins in circulation to roughly double to $500 billion in the next few years, although some estimates have put it as high as $2 trillion.

As stablecoins need be pegged to the dollar under the U.S. act, it will trigger buying of U.S. Treasury bonds. That has its benefits for the U.S. as it grapples with a gaping budget deficit, but could also pose problems for the U.S. and other countries.

"In doing so you create an alternative to the U.S. dollar and that could lead to more weakening of the dollar," Mortier said. "Because if a country is pushing a stablecoin, it could be perceived as pushing the message that the dollar is not that strong."

Currently, 98% of all stablecoins are pegged to the dollar, but more than 80% of stablecoin transactions happen outside the United States.

Italy's finance minister, Giancarlo Giorgetti, warned in April that the U.S. stablecoin policies presented an "even more dangerous" threat to European financial stability than Trump's trade war.

His argument was that access to dollars without needing a U.S. bank account would be attractive to millions of people and could undermine countries' monetary sovereignty.

The Bank for International Settlements issued a similar warning on the risks posed by stablecoins, noting their potential to undermine monetary sovereignty, transparency issues and the risk of capital flight from emerging economies.

Mortier, who oversees the 2 trillion euros ($2.36 trillion) of assets Amundi manages - none of which are in crypto - said he still had not fully made up his mind about stablecoins, but the worry was that a mass uptake could impact financial stability.

As well as the dollarization issue, they would become "quasi-banks" he said, as people will deposit money in a coin assuming they can take it out again whenever they want. They will also be used as a direct means of payment.

"It could potentially destabilise the global payment system," he said. "I'm not so sure it's a good idea".

Man Secretly Changes Son's Name After Brother Uses It First, Claiming Sister-in-Law Wanted Names to Match

Stock photo of a woman listing out baby names

A couple kept their baby's name secret, until the man's sister-in-law mysteriously discovered it and used it for her own son first

The sister-in-law claimed she wanted the cousins to have "matching names," since the brothers have similar names themselves

To avoid confusion and drama, the original parents secretly changed their baby's name and waited months before revealing it

A man is turning to the Reddit community for advice after family baby naming drama left him questioning his own actions.

He and his wife welcomed their son four months ago, having chosen a name early in the pregnancy and keeping it "to ourselves," he writes. But things took a turn when his sister-in-law somehow discovered their secret.

Getty

Stock photo of a couple with their newborn

"She never said how. She just told us she loved the name, congrats and she couldn't wait to meet him," he writes in his post, describing his suspicion that his sister-in-law snooped for the name. The man even mentioned the situation to his brother, who admitted that his wife "does like to browse through people's things like it was no biggie."

The real shock came when his nephew was born, and his brother and sister-in-law announced the baby's name — which was identical to the one he and his wife had chosen, "First, middle and last name," he says.

The brother called immediately after the announcement, asking him to "keep quiet because his wife had a rough birth and she didn't need drama and he knew we might not like it but she really wanted the name."

The sister-in-law's reasoning was that since the two brothers have "matching twin-like names," she wanted their sons to share the same name as well, so "they were each other's namesake," the poster writes. He and his wife were stunned, he adds, but ultimately decided to "pick a different name."

"We'd pretend to keep the original name until there was zero risk of SIL changing my nephew's name (6 months after a birth is harder to make a change in our state)," he explains, revealing the couple's careful plan.

Only recently did they start telling people the baby's real name, and their parents, sisters, friends and in-laws all seemed to understand their decision.

However, the brother was upset and confronted him, saying, "you upset his wife by silently doing this s— and taking away her choice to match the boys. He told me it was a d— move." But, the poster stood his ground, telling his brother, "his wife using the full name we chose was a d— move."

Feeling frustrated and misunderstood, the man turned to Reddit for perspective. "I think he's cray. So does my wife," he admits, wondering if they are "weird for thinking of this kind of stuff."

"What about the fact that she took away your choice to have an individual name? By invading your privacy? He's fine with that I assume?" asks one commenter.

Adds another, "Skip the brother. Tell SIL she is creepy and she's not allowed around your son until she gets her behavior under control. It's creepy in my opinion."

ROME (AP) — Brescia, the club that Roberto Baggio ended his career with, had its national license revoked and was kicked out of Serie C on Thursday after going bankrupt, the Italian soccer federation announced.

Brescia owner Massimo Cellino's failure to pay back millions in debts had already resulted in the club's relegation from the second division.

Brescia finished the season one point above the relegation zone but was then hit with a four-point penalty for financial irregularities that dropped the team to the third division.

Now Brescia — which was founded 114 years ago — will likely have to form an entirely new club and restart in Serie D.

Baggio played for Brescia from 2000-2004 when the northern team was in Serie A. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola briefly played alongside Baggio at Brescia in 2001-02.

Brescia last played in Serie A in 2019-20.
