Stephen King has apologized after claiming that conservative activist Charlie Kirk "advocated stoning gays to death" in a since-deleted X post. But King also doubled down on the point of his original post, making it clear his apology was solely for the misinformation.

"I apologize for saying Charlie Kirk advocated stoning gays," King wrote Friday. "What he actually demonstrated was how some people cherry-pick Biblical passages."

The prolific author made the controversial post hours after the Turning Point USA founder was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Kirk, 31, was pronounced died shortly after the shooting made headlines.

King had responded to an X post by Fox News host Jesse Watters, who claimed that the late media personality known for his viral "Prove Me Wrong" series was not a "controversial" or "polarizing" man.

"He advocated stoning gays to death. Just sayin'," King replied to Watters in the now-deleted post. Unsurprisingly, the author was met with immense backlash from Kirk's followers and fellow conservative personalities, including Sen. Ted Cruz, who said King was a "horrible, evil, twisted liar."

"This is what I get for reading something on Twitter w/o [without] fact-checking. Won't happen again," King quipped in another post.

The *Long Walk* writer was referring to comments made by Kirk in 2024, when he attacked YouTuber Ms. Rachel for quoting "love your neighbor" to defend Pride celebrations.

In a video shared to X, Kirk mocks Rachel for using the Bible to defend the LGBTQIA+ community and says, "Ms. Rachel, you might wanna crack open that Bible of yours, in a lesser referenced part of the same part of scripture is in Leviticus 18 is that thou shall lay with another man, shall be stoned to death."

"Just sayin'," he adds smirking.

Kirk is referring to is the Bible verse Leviticus 18:22, which in some translations states: "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."**

Kirk had emerged in recent years as an influential right-wing media pundit after establishing Turning Point USA at 18. He became a frequent guest on news and political talk shows, embracing divisive topics and praising President Trump. Kirk also became a staple on college campuses, hosting events where he mans a "prove me wrong" booth and invites audience members to debate political ideals with him on stage.

He was manning his viral booth on the first stop of his American Comeback tour in Orem, Utah, when shots were fired. In video posts circulating social media, Kirk can be seen getting struck in the neck. Attendees have also shared video footage of students on campus running away from the sound of gunshots.
