She did the dressing challenge from May 6 to June 19, leading up to a local production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber show

"I like to wear bright colors because the news business can get depressing pretty quickly if you let it," says news anchor Nafeesa Karim

Name a color — any color — and news anchor Nafeesa Karim probably wore it!

Karim, an anchor for CTV News Vancouver and CTV News Vancouver Island, recently combined her love of musicals with her career in a self-assigned project: Dress, on-air, in every single color from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Over the course of 29 days, she made her way through all 29 shades.

The inspiration for the project — which she later documented on Instagram with a compilation of each color set to "Joseph's Coat (The Coat of Many Colors)" — traces back to Karim's childhood, she tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"I've been a fan of the musical since I was a little kid," she says. "Donny Osmond starred in the Canadian production, which came to Vancouver when I was a child. My mom took my sister and I to the show, and we bought the soundtrack on cassette tape and listened to it endlessly in the car."

So when she heard that a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beloved stage production was coming to town, she decided to time her colorful dressing streak to the show, with the final shade (blue) concluding the project. From May 6 to June 19, Monday through Friday, she rocked each and every shade, from red and blue to azure and russet.

Vancouver's Metro Theatre recently "staged a production of it, which I bought tickets for," Karim says. "In the lead-up to seeing the show and re-living my childhood memories, I thought it would be fun to see if I could do all the colors from the song, in order, on consecutive days."

The anchor had previously done the colors in the first line of "Joseph's Coat (The Coat of Many Colors)," she says, because they measure up to a week's worth of outfits. "I always had it in the back of my mind that I could pull off the whole song," she says, "but it wasn't until the Metro Theatre production that I decided to try it."

Thankfully, Karim had most of the colors covered, thanks to an already "vibrant" closet, which she often showcases during anchoring duties, but she did have to go shopping for Fawn and Mauve, she says. Pastels aren't really her thing — she prefers bold colors, at least while anchoring.

"I'm kind of known for wearing bright colors and jewel tones on air," she says. "I take my job as a news anchor very seriously, but I also realize that television is a visual medium, and people are looking at our clothes."

Plus, she adds, "I like to wear bright colors because the news business can get depressing pretty quickly if you let it."

And while Karim ultimately edited each look into a final compilation — which amassed quite a bit of online attention — the challenge was more of a personal effort, she says.

"I didn't tell many people I was doing this, except for Ann Luu, who does the weather, and we often chat pre-show about what we will wear. It was really just something for me, though," the anchor says. That, "and an excellent way to make sure I don't repeat outfits too soon!"

"It was just a silly thing I did to make myself smile, but people were really into it!" she adds. It was also accidentally informational. "I got a lot of comments specifically about the colour ochre," she says, recalling comments about not knowing what the color looks like until seeing her video.

It "was funny for me," she adds, "because I watched a lot of Bob Ross growing up, so ochre wasn't an unfamiliar colour to me."

Ochre aside, the overall response was unexpected — something she "wasn't prepared for," Karim tells PEOPLE. "I thought maybe a few hundred people would like it, but it turns out, there are a lot of theater kids out there!" she says. "People are sharing stories about the first time they saw Joseph, or perhaps they performed it at school or in their community."

"It's really amazing to see how it's resonated with people from all walks of life," she says. "My favourite comment was, 'only a true theatre kid would have this level of commitment,' which is absolutely true … we don't do anything halfway!"

Adds Karim: "I'm so happy this video is making people smile at a time when the news feels like doom and gloom all the time."
