After putting together a strong playing career, former Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen has blossomed into an even better broadcaster. Since moving into the booth, Olsen received high marks for his insight and ability to break down games.
But when it came time for Tom Brady to enter the world of broadcasting, Olsen had to take a hit. Fox placed Brady on its No. 1 broadcasting team, demoting Olsen to the No. 2 team. While Olsen has handled that transition with grace, he admitted that the change was a bit of an "ego hit" at the time.
Olsen made that comment on the Never Settle podcast with Marty Smith and Jimmie Johnson in September. When asked about being replaced by Brady, Olsen said he wasn't happy about the decision initially, according to Awful Announcing.
"Were you pissed at first?" asked Smith.
"Of course," replied Olsen. "Professionally, no different than I'm sure for him, or for any of us, there is a level of competitiveness that allows any of us to exist in what we do. When you have a young driver come join Hendrick (Motorsports), are you going to be supportive? Are you going to give them advice? Of course. Do you want him to beat you in the Coca-Cola 600? Hell no. That is the world we've all lived in. So that's not new to me. In the moment, is your ego hit? Sure."
Olsen was careful to note that he's fully supportive of Brady and willing to give him advice. While getting demoted for Brady was demoralizing, Olsen isn't trying to create drama.
As Olsen pointed out during the interview, he knew this was always going to happen. When Olsen first joined Fox, he knew Brady would eventually come to the network. While he was still playing, Brady agreed to a broadcasting deal with Fox. Once he retired from the NFL, Brady would join the network as its lead analyst.
Despite Olsen getting high marks for his performance as a broadcaster, that's exactly what happened. Brady retired following the 2022 NFL season, took a year off and then joined Fox in the broadcast booth. He received mixed reviews for his analysis early on, though did make some strides by the end of the 2024 NFL season.
Brady knows he needs to get better in the booth. Following his rocky first season, Brady admitted he experienced growing pains while calling games. He added that experience should make him better in Year 2.
Fox is unlikely to make any changes to its current arrangement. Brady is a big name and deserves the opportunity to show improvement in the booth. But if Brady ever reconsiders his role, Fox knows it has a more-than-capable analyst waiting in the wings to take back the No. 1 job.
