Sarah Jessica Parker opens up about how she has been surprised by certain fans of And Just Like That... and Sex and the City in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE
Some of the surprise supporters, according to the actress, include NBA stars and New York Police Department (NYPD) officers
"It's really very moving," Parker said of the varying Sex and the City-universe fans
Sarah Jessica Parker's fan base reaches far and wide.
The actress, 60, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that she has been surprised over the years by certain fans of And Just Like That... and Sex and the City.
"I encounter people like that all the time," Parker — who recently took part in a Q&A hosted by Threads — says.
"I was at a CNN event, and all these legendary basketball players were saying, 'Oh my God! I have to take a picture with you and send this home,' and I never expected that they would know who I was. I certainly knew who they were," she recalls of one specific instance.
Another, she adds, includes "New York City police officers or first responders. It's just a whole variety of people, and it's really very moving."

Parker's first onscreen role was in 1974's The Little Match Girl. She later gained recognition at age 11 for playing Annie in the Broadway musical of the same name in 1979.
In the years to follow, she starred in various acting projects — including 1993's Hocus Pocus — before she became a household name, starring as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City on HBO from June 1998 to February 2004.

The series spawned two movies, 2008's Sex and the City, and its sequel two years later, plus a CW series, The Carrie Diaries, which ran from 2013 to 2014. Most recently, Parker has starred in And Just Like That... — the revival and sequel series to Sex and the City, which aired its finale on Aug. 14.
Over the course of her illustrious career, Parker has become an Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award and SAG Award-winner, to name just a few accolades received.

Parker recalls one fan encounter she had that helped her realize she had made it — and also how wide Sex and the City's fandom spread.
"I remember being at the luggage carousel at an airport, and a man came over and said to me, 'You were on that show, right?' And I said, 'Yes,' " she tells PEOPLE.
"And he sort of basically confessed that he didn't think he was meant to be watching the show, and maybe he'd been pulled into it reluctantly by a girlfriend or a wife or a daughter," Parker continues.
"So it's been really interesting to see who that audience is and how they've changed, and how we've changed, and who they've brought along with them. It's been really extraordinary," adds the mother of three.
