The "Pretty Little Baby" singer died on July 16, as another one of her songs has a social media moment

"Who's Sorry Now" is one of Connie Francis's most well-known and celebrated songs, but it's also one she had no intention of singing, only doing so after her father's insistence. In fact, she tried to sabotage her own 1957 recording session to avoid singing the song.

"My father wanted me to record 'Who's Sorry Now,' and I didn't wanna do it. I said, 'When was that thing written, anyway?' And he said, '1923.' I said, '1923! The kids will laugh me off American Bandstand!" she recalled in an interview with PEOPLE two months prior to her death. "He said, 'The only way you'll ever get on American Bandstand, sweetheart, is if you sit on top of the television — do this song!' "

With just a few minutes left in her allotted studio session, Francis was convinced that she had successfully run out the clock.

"I had 16 minutes left to do it in my session, and I said, 'Well, that's a wrap, fellas. We don't have time for 'Who's Sorry Now.' And my father said, 'If I have to nail you to that microphone, you're gonna do a take,' " she said at the time.

Francis recorded just one take of the song, which the Isham Jones Orchestra initially performed 102 years ago. Everything changed when Francis's rendition made its way to Dick Clark, who played it on American Bandstand, claiming, "She is headed for the number one spot."

The iconic TV host was close. Francis's version of "Who's Sorry Now" hit No. 4 on the charts and spent 22 weeks on the Hot 100.

"Dick Clark played it, and that was all the difference in the world," she said. "Without Dick Clark, there would be no Connie Francis."

On Thursday, July 16, the "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" singer passed at the age of 87, two weeks after it was revealed that she'd been hospitalized due to "extreme pain."

Her death coincides with the resurgence of her 1962 song, "Pretty Little Baby," on TikTok. Ironically, the New Jersey native told PEOPLE in May that she had no recollection of the song, which wasn't a hit when it was released as a B-side to the single "I'm Gonna Be Warm This Winter."

"To tell you the truth, I didn't even remember the song," she said. "I had to listen to it to grasp what was [happening on TikTok]. I had to hear it, because I didn't remember 'Pretty Little Baby.' I didn't remember the song."

The song has been streamed more than 20 million times on Spotify, and stars such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian have recorded videos lip-synching to "Pretty Little Baby" with their daughters. Francis saw some of the videos prior to her death.

"It's a dream come true," she said. "To think that kindergarten kids now know my name and my music? It's just thrilling. It is an amazing feeling."

The Looking For Love actress admitted that "Pretty Little Baby" wasn't even among her favorite recordings, but she cherished that it was "touching the hearts of millions of people."

"I think it's innocent and pure," she said. "This is a time when everything is in such chaos."

As her song continues to rack up views on social media, Francis's past is being played out in the Broadway musical Just in Time, a show based on the life of Bobby Darin, with whom the "Stupid Cupid" singer had a brief relationship before he married Sandra Dee.
