<p>Richard Dreyfuss may have survived a killer shark, but he isn't superhuman.</p>

<p>The Oscar-winning actor, beloved for his leading role in the marine horror "Jaws," was forced to sit out an appearance at a shark-themed fan convention on Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13, after falling ill.</p>

<p>In a July 11 Instagram post, SharkCon 2025, a two-day event sponsored by National Geographic, shared a video message from Dreyfuss, in which he informed fans he wouldn't be able to attend the Tampa, Florida, event due to a case of viral bronchitis.</p>

<p>"I've been told by my doctors I cannot fly, and I would have to fly five hours to get there," Dreyfuss, 77, said. "I'm terribly sorry because I had planned to be there and had been looking forward to it."</p>

<p>'I was a jerk': Why Richard Dreyfuss got it wrong about 'Jaws'</p>

<p>USA TODAY has reached out to representatives of Dreyfuss for comment.</p>

<p>SharkCon said in a statement alongside the post that all prepaid autographs and photo ops with Dreyfuss would be automatically refunded to fans. Explaining his absence, Dreyfuss said he didn't "want to get anyone else sick" or worsen his own condition.</p>

<p>"I feel terrible about not showing up, and I'd feel worse about exposing you to this apparently very viral illness," Dreyfuss said. "But there will be other times, and I will make it my business to show up, and I want to wish you all good luck and happiness."</p>

<p>Dive deeper into 'Jaws': 50 years ago, the shark horror scared us senseless. We never got over it.</p>

<p>Viral bronchitis, also known as acute bronchitis, is a type of respiratory illness that is typically caused by a viral infection, such as influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, rhinovirus (common cold) and coronavirus, according to the Cleveland Clinic.</p>

<p>The illness normally goes away on its own in a few weeks, per the Cleveland Clinic, and most individuals don't require extensive treatment. Symptoms often include persistent cough and wheezing, as well as shortness of breath, fever, runny nose and fatigue.</p>

<p>"I want you all to feel very sorry for me and very sorry for yourselves," Dreyfuss jokingly added. "I'm in a lot of pain, and that has to come first – my health – and I feel very good about having the time and enough health."</p>

<p>Dreyfuss starred as marine biologist Matt Hooper in "Jaws," the 1975 thriller about a New England police chief (Roy Scheider) who teams up with Hooper and shark hunter Quint (Robert Shaw) to take down a vicious great white shark attacking beachgoers.</p>

<p>The Steven Spielberg-directed film earned a whopping $260.7 million at the global box office and is widely regarded as the first summer blockbuster. In a 2024 interview with the USA TODAY Network, Dreyfuss reflected that he thought the movie was "going to be a disaster," due to various production issues that included delays, cost overruns and mechanical problems.</p>

<p>"I couldn't imagine how Steven was going to overcome all of the problems that he faced every day," Dreyfuss said. "I know I went on at least one talk show where I said this is a total disaster. And then I went back on that same show and pronounced myself the stupidest actor in America. When I saw the film all put together, I realized I was a jerk."</p>

<p>Find out which couple won during finale on Sunday, July 13</p>

<p>The four couples who made it to the finale were: Nic Vansteenberghe and Olandria Carthen; Iris Kendall and Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez; Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales; and Huda Mustafa and Chris Seeley</p>

<p>Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 7 finale of Love Island USA.</p>

<p>The new winners of Love Island USA have been crowned.</p>

<p>On Sunday, July 13, season 7 of the hit Peacock series came to an end and the winners were announced by host Ariana Madix.</p>

<p>In the dramatic conclusion, it was revealed Amaya Espinal and Bryan Arenales received the most votes and were named season 7 winners. Nic Vansteenberghe and Olandria Carthen were the runners-up, Huda Mustafa and Chris Seeley came in third place and Iris Kendall and Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez came in fourth.</p>

<p>When it came down to decide who got the $100,000 cash prize, Bryan let Amaya pick the first envelope from Madix, which contained $0. After Bryan opened the $100,000 envelope, he agreed to split the cash prize evenly with Amaya.</p>

<p>To celebrate, Amaya got the "zoomies" one last time, as Madix called it, and then the entire cast jumped in the pool to mark the final night of their unforgettable summer in Fiji.</p>

<p>Amaya took a moment to shout out all those who feel "misunderstood" like she did earlier this season as she celebrated the win.</p>

<p>"I feel like I'm flying in the sky right now. To feel so seen and validated and for people to see how powerful our connection is... And like, boy, was this a ride, here on Love Island. But this, man, I would do this ride all over again if it led me to him," Amaya, 25, said after she and Bryan, 28, were named the winners.</p>

<p>"This is just a message to everyone out there who's misunderstood: nobody should ever be tamed and that there's always someone out there for you who's going to love you for you and appreciate all of your craziness," she continued. "Don't ever settle for nobody."</p>

<p>Bryan also reflected on the journey he's had in the Fiji villa since joining in Casa Amor, where he initially coupled up with Andreina Santos. "I don't even know how to put it into words. Meeting Amaya here turned my experience around ridiculously. I'm so thankful to meet this person. I would do this experience a hundred times over," he said. "It feels surreal."</p>

<p>Runners-up Nic and Olandria both agreed that Amaya deserved to take home the season's win.</p>

<p>When Madix asked how Nic and Olandria felt about being runners-up, Nic, 24, didn't hesitate to gush over his fellow Islander, who he said is the "kindest, most genuine" person.</p>

<p>"I think she was really misunderstood by a lot of people and for Bryan to come in here at Casa and to be able to understand this beautiful woman, like I'm getting actual goosebumps, cause I'm so happy for this genuine connection," Nic said. "And I don't think there's anybody else that deserves that first place."</p>

<p>Olandria agreed with everything Nic had said, and then the final two couples embraced.</p>

<p>During her final speech, Amaya said she'd finally found her Prince Charming in Bryan.</p>

<p>Reflecting on the ups and downs she experienced during her time on Love Island, Amaya told Bryan, "Some paths made me feel misunderstood, and as if the love I had to give the world needed to be watered down. But every decision led me to find my personal Prince Charming."</p>

<p>She called him "a man who fills up my cup and embraces the waterfall of my emotion," as she said, "You make me believe fairytales are true because I am currently living in one with you."</p>

<p>He returned the favor and echoed what she had said about how well they fit together. "I often said that I wanted to provide that safe place here for you, but little did I know that you would do that for me, too. You said I was the water to your fire, but you are my peace to this madness."</p>

<p>"We are two misunderstood people who understand each other," he concluded.</p>

<p>Earlier in the episode, third-place couple Huda and Chris had mutually decided to part ways — a historic first for a Love Island finale — but they still delivered touching final speeches.</p>

<p>Though they were no longer romantically involved, both Huda and Chris had touching things to say to say about one another in their final speeches.</p>

<p>"Even though we didn't end up being a match, we get to apply everything we learned in this villa to the real world, which I think is much more valuable than anything we could've imagined," Huda, 24, said.</p>

<p>In Chris' speech, he applauded Huda for her "bravery" in coming on the show as a mom. "You did this for you and I think you should be proud of yourself," he said.</p>

<p>"Your daughter is one lucky girl to have you as a mom, and I hope you know that."</p>

<p>The last two Islanders voted off before the finale were closed-off couple Ace Greene and Chelley Bissainthe. They were sent packing on July 11th.</p>

<p>"We went through it all, had so much fun with it, and then in the end, we get to walk out together," Chelley told PEOPLE of the dumping, which she and Ace both called "bittersweet."</p>

<p>Iris Kendall and Pepe Garcia-Gonzalez on 'Love Island USA' season 7</p>

<p>"So it's one of those moments of like, happiness, where it's like, 'Okay, at the end, we still won. We have each other,'" she said. "We're just very happy that we have one another. We're so happy with the friends that we made on the inside. So it doesn't end here. The journey still continues."</p>

<p>Amaya and Bryan inherit the crown from last season's winners Serena Page and Kordell Beckham.</p>

<p>After winning the $100,000 prize last July, Serena and Kordell went on to make things official — and are still going strong.</p>

<p>Before season 7 kicked off, Kordell, 22, told PEOPLE his advice for the new batch of Islanders.</p>

<p>"Just be comfortable with yourself, honestly. That's literally it. Just be you. Be the best you, you can be," he said. "You don't have to put on the front for anybody. They'll love you for you. So, don't try to hide a few things, of what you think people may not like, because they might like it."</p>

<p>He added, "Don't get in your head, trying to create this image for the audience. Just be you."</p>

<p>Long before she became TV's no-nonsense courtroom queen, Judge Judy Sheindlin was handing down real-world rulings in New York Family Court. And on July 14, 1989, she presided over a case involving a rock star who had no idea he was standing in front of a future celebrity.</p>

<p>Welsh singer Tom Jones, then 49, had just come off decades of hit records and swooning fans when he found himself answering to Judge Sheindlin in a paternity suit filed by a 27-year-old model from New York. After a brief affair at a Manhattan hotel two years earlier, the model had given birth to a son—and paternity tests proved Jones was the father.</p>

<p>Sheindlin ordered the suave crooner to pay $200 a week in child support to Katherine Berkery, the mother of his son, Jonathan Jones Berkery, born in 1988. Though Jones acknowledged the child after the ruling, he reportedly never developed a relationship with him. It's believed the two have never met, despite Jonathan's public appeals over the years.</p>

<p>At the time, Judy Sheindlin was far from a household name. But just seven years later, in 1996, Judge Judy would premiere—turning her into a pop culture icon known for her sharp wit and uncompromising rulings. The show ran until 2021 and became one of the most-watched court shows of all time.</p>

<p>Turns out, the man once ruled by Judge Judy wasn't the only legend in the room that day.</p>

<p>LAGOS (Reuters) -Nigeria's late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a London clinic on Sunday aged 82, will be buried in his northern home state of Katsina on Tuesday, the state governor said.</p>

<p>Buhari, a former military ruler after a coup in the 1980s, returned to frontline politics to become the first Nigerian president to oust an incumbent through the ballot box in 2015. He was re-elected for a second term four years later.</p>

<p>Nigeria's Vice President Kashim Shettima and government officials were in London on Monday to organise the repatriation of the former president's remains.</p>

<p>Katsina state governor Dikko Umaru Radda said after consultation with Buhari's family it was agreed the body would arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday for burial the same day in his home town of Daura.</p>

<p>Among those who paid tribute to Buhari was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who posted on X platform that "his wisdom, warmth and unwavering commitment to India–Nigeria friendship stood out."</p>

<p>Buhari earned a devoted following for his brand of anti-corruption conviction politics, especially in Nigeria's largely Muslim north.</p>

<p>He referred to himself as a "converted democrat" and swapped his military uniform for kaftans and prayer caps.</p>

<p>Ibrahim Babangida, another former military ruler who toppled Buhari in a coup in 1985, said he knew Buhari as a deeply spiritual and humble man.</p>

<p>"We may not have agreed on everything — as brothers often don't — but I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism," Babangida said in a statement.</p>

<p>After leaving office in 2023, Buhari spent most of his time in Daura, away from the public eye.</p>

<p>His successor Bola Tinubu inherited a country grappling with double digit inflation, foreign exchange shortages, economic hardship, low oil production and insecurity that had spread to most parts of Nigeria.</p>

<p>Buhari's supporters, however, viewed him as Nigeria's conscience because he had a reputation for shunning the corruption and ostentatious lifestyles often associated with the country's political elites.</p>

<p>To his critics, Buhari was "an absentee landlord — a leader who governed by delegation, who disappeared for long stretches (often to London for medical treatment), and whose aloofness felt like abandonment," the local BusinessDay newspaper said.</p>

<p>A chunk of the Martian surface that made an unlikely interplanetary voyage to Earth will soon be available to the highest bidder.</p>

<p>And for a few million dollars, it could be yours.</p>

<p>Sotheby's, a British-founded broker based in New York City, will soon auction off a cosmic item it's billing as the largest Martian meteorite ever found on Earth. Of course, such a distinction is expected to also fetch a high price tag.</p>

<p>Here's everything to know about the large, valuable Mars rock.</p>

<p>Mars rock could sell for $4 million at Sotheby's auction in New York</p>

<p>The meteorite NWA 16788, the largest known piece of Mars on Earth, is displayed July 8 during the press preview of Sotheby's Natural History auction in New York City.</p>

<p>The large space rock, which has the scientific name of NWA 16788, had its Martian origins validated by the Meteoritical Society, which included it in its Meteoritical Bulletin, the global journal of record for meteor-related science.</p>

<p>Sotheby's, one of the oldest and largest fine auctioneers of art and collectibles in the world, will auction off the meteorite, along with more than 100 other items, Wednesday, July 16, at its New York City headquarters.</p>

<p>Marketed by Sotheby's as "the largest Martian meteorite ever found on Earth," the cosmic object could sell for up to $4 million, making it the most valuable meteorite ever offered at auction.</p>

<p>"NWA 16788 is a discovery of extraordinary significance," Cassandra Hatton, vice chairman of science and natural history for Sotheby's, said in a statement. "Weathered by its journey through space and time, its immense size and unmistakable red color sets it apart as a once-in-a-generation find."</p>

<p>What are meteorites?</p>

<p>Rocks in space are known as meteoroids. If those space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, they become meteors that streak across the sky in events colloquially referred to as "shooting stars."</p>

<p>Meteors – or fragments of them – that survive their atmospheric trip and land on the surface without burning up become meteorites, according to NASA.</p>

<p>Martian meteorite, or Mars rock, is largest on Earth: How big is it?</p>

<p>The Martian meteorite is 54 pounds, or about the weight of a standard bag of cement.</p>

<p>Measuring nearly 15 inches by 11 inches by 6 inches, the space rock is approximately 70% larger than the next largest piece of Mars found on Earth. In fact, it is so large that it represents approximately 6.5% of all Martian material ever found on Earth.</p>

<p>How did Martian space rock get to Earth?</p>

<p>NWA 16788 was discovered Nov. 16, 2023, by a meteorite hunter in Niger's remote Agadez region in the Sahara Desert.</p>

<p>Featuring an unmistakable reddish Martian hue, NWA 16788's internal composition suggests it was blasted from the surface of Mars by a powerful asteroid strike. Intense enough to turn some of the meteorite's minerals into glass, the asteroid strike sent the rock hurtling through space, where it miraculously made it through Earth's atmosphere without burning up, Sotheby's said in an auction house video.</p>

<p>Because the meteorite shows signs of minimal Earthly weathering, and its chemical makeup has not significantly changed, experts believe it reached our planet in recent years.</p>

<p>On a planet mostly covered in water, discovering meteorites on land is incredibly rare.</p>

<p>And Mars meteorites are even more elusive on Earth. Of the more than 77,000 officially recognized meteorites, only 400 are Martian meteorites, according to Sotheby's.</p>

<p>The meteorite was previously on exhibit at the Italian Space Agency in Rome and at a private gallery in Arezzo, Tuscany before it landed in Sotheby's auction.</p>

<p>BERLIN (AP) — Arachnophobes beware: Customs officials on Monday released photos from a seizure of roughly 1,500 young tarantulas found inside plastic containers that had been hidden in chocolate spongecake boxes shipped to an airport in western Germany.</p>

<p>Customs officials found the shipment at Cologne Bonn airport in a package that had arrived from Vietnam, tipped off by a "noticeable smell" that didn't resemble the expected aroma of the 7 kilograms (about 15 pounds) of the confectionery treats, Cologne customs office spokesman Jens Ahland said.</p>

<p>"My colleagues at the airport are regularly surprised by the contents of prohibited packages from all over the world, but the fact that they found around 1,500 small plastic containers containing young tarantulas in this package left even the most experienced among them speechless," Ahland said in a statement.</p>

<p>Ahland hailed an "extraordinary seizure," but one that "saddens us to see what some people do to animals purely for profit."</p>

<p>Many of the eight-legged creatures didn't survive the trip, in a suspected violation of German animal-welfare rules, while survivors were given to the care of an expert handler, the office said. Reached by phone, Ahland said that the estimated value of the shipment was being assessed.</p>

<p>Criminal proceedings are underway against the intended recipient in the Sauerland region, east of the airport, in part for alleged violations of failure to pay the proper import duties and make the proper customs declarations, the office said.</p>

<p>The tarantulas were discovered about three weeks ago, but the customs office only made the images public on Monday.</p>
