Back-to-school shopping might put a bigger-than-usual dent in families' budgets this year, thanks to trade tariffs on essentials such as clothing, school supplies and electronics.

But you can avoid much of the impact by shopping sooner rather than later and pulling out all the stops to save money. Here's how.

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

How Are Tariffs Increasing Back-to-School Costs?

"For many back-to-school items, we are not experiencing the impact of tariffs — yet," Mary Clements Evans, founder and president of Evans Wealth Strategies, told GOBankingRates.

"Upon the tariff announcements, many of the large retailers stocked up on goods at pre-tariff costs. You can see evidence of this from the increased traffic we had in the ports," Evans said, referring to the sudden increase in shipping container volume early in the spring.

Once that inventory is depleted, retailers will have to pay the higher costs, at least some of which will be passed onto consumers. Evans expects that to happen in time for back-to-school shopping.

"If you see a sale for items you need later this year, buy them now," she said. "Don't wait in the hopes that you will get a lower cost."

Consider This: 4 Companies as Much as Tripling Prices Due To Tariffs

Evans also recommends bargain shopping, acknowledging that it can be time consuming but noting it'll be worth it this year, and not only for big-ticket items.

"Use this process for shoes, clothes and school supplies. Many small savings will make a big difference," she said.

How To Save on Back-to-School Shopping Amid Tariffs

Here are more strategies you can use for maximum savings on back-to-school shopping.

Shop stores that have frozen or rolled back prices. Target is carrying over its 2024 prices on back-to-school items. Dollar General recently cut prices on 1,000 items for a summer-long promotion that will also include digital coupons and other specials.

Use cash-back shopping tools. Cash-back shopping websites like Rakuten, Ibotta and Swagbucks save you money with cash-back rewards for purchases on sites you already use. For example, Rakuten's partner sites include Adidas, Aeropostal, Groupon and Nike, so you can stack savings if those retailers are offering deals.

Add money-saving coupon extensions to your browser. Browser extensions like Capital One Shopping automatically look for coupons while you're shopping online.

Ask AI. Try asking Claude, ChatGPT or another AI tool to find back-to-school coupons, coupon codes and other discounts for items you're looking for. AI can also recommend less expensive alternatives to items you're considering buying.

Try new brands. When shopping for back-to-school, more than three-quarters of parents buy the same brands each year, according to the 2025 Back-to-School Forecast Report from Inmar Inc. Consider shopping outside of your comfort zone to find better prices.

Ignore the hype. The Inmart report also found that parents' purchase decisions are heavily influenced by social and creator content, and also by their kids — who, in turn, are influenced by social media. Ignore the influencers and focus on what's practical and realistic for your family.

LONDON (Reuters) -U.S. singer Chris Brown on Friday pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm by allegedly attacking a music producer with a bottle in a London nightclub two years ago.

Brown last month denied a more serious charge of attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm in what prosecutors said was an "unprovoked attack" on Abraham Diaw in a London nightclub in 2023.

The 36-year-old appeared at London's Southwark Crown Court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to causing actual bodily harm and a further charge of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

The R&B star, a two-time Grammy Award winner known for hits such as "Loyal", "Run It" and "Under the Influence", was granted bail in May after paying a 5 million-pound ($6.7 million) security fee in order to begin his "Breezy Bowl XX" tour.

Brown was arrested at a hotel in Manchester, northern England in May after returning to Britain for the first time since the incident two years ago.

"Lords of the Rings" Oscar winner Peter Jackson has not directed a narrative feature film in more than a decade. His last feature, "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies," was released in 2014. Since then, Jackson has pivoted to documentaries with 2018's "They Shall Not Grow Old" and 2021's "The Beatles: Get Back." Jackson recently spoke to ScreenRant and was asked about his decade-plus hiatus from feature filmmaking.

"No, no. I'm certainly not retired," Jackson said. "We are currently working on three different screenplays. I'm at the moment writing three different scripts."

"We are producing and have been writing 'The Hunt for Gollum,' which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year," he added, referencing the next "Lord of the Rings" movie. "I've enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I've grown old or not, and obviously the 'Get Back,' The Beatles project. I've enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that'll probably carry on."

Recently, Jackson has been prioritizing Colossal, the biosciences company he is a major investor in. Together with the company's CEO Ben Lamm and archaeologist Kyle Davis, Jackson has been trying to bring the Giant Moa back from extinction.

"To me, de-extincting the Moa would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make," Jackso told ScreenRant. "I've made a lot of movies, but to see the Giant Moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time."

As reported by the AP: "Colossal Biosciences has announced an effort to genetically engineer living birds to resemble the extinct South Island giant moa – which once stood 12 feet (3.6 meters) tall – with $15 million in funding from Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh. The collaboration also includes the New Zealand-based Ngāi Tahu Research Centre."

"The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum" will open in theaters Dec. 17, 2027. Jackson and his partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are producing the new movie.

Ukraine rejects accusation by Hungarian leader Orbán over the fatal beating of a dual citizen

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday accused Ukrainian authorities of beating a Hungarian-Ukrainian dual citizen to death during his mobilization in the military, a claim Ukraine has rejected but that has further strained relations between the neighboring countries.

Orbán, a vehement critic of Ukraine and its fight to ward off Russia's full-scale invasion, told state radio that a man who reportedly died in a Ukrainian hospital earlier this month had been "beaten to death" by his recruiters.

He didn't provide any evidence to substantiate the accusation, adding that the matter remained under investigation.

Orbán's statements came a day after Hungary's foreign ministry summoned the Ukrainian ambassador over the unconfirmed report. The ministry claimed that Ukrainian military recruiters had beaten the man as part of "forced conscription" into the army before taking him to a recruitment center.

Ukrainian authorities have disputed the account, saying the man was a Ukrainian citizen who had left his military unit without authorization and later checked himself into a hospital. They said the hospital found no signs of physical injury indicating violence.

The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism, Ukraine's embassy in Budapest wrote in a post on social media on Thursday.

"We categorically reject any allegations of forced conscription, mistreatment, or human rights violations" committed by any Ukrainian military officials, the statement said, adding that Ukraine is open to a "transparent investigation."

The dispute places further strain on the diplomatic relationship between Ukraine and Hungary — a member of NATO and the European Union.

While most EU countries have offered political, financial, and military support to Kyiv since Russia launched an all-out war on Feb. 24, 2022, Hungary — under Orbán — has charted a starkly different course.

Hungary has refused to supply Ukraine with weapons or allow their transit through Hungarian territory, demanding sanctions relief and rapprochement with Russia, and adopting a combative stance toward both Kyiv and its EU backers.

With his governing Fidesz party slipping in the polls and a new opposition force gaining momentum, Orbán has escalated a sweeping anti-Ukraine campaign — presenting the upcoming election as a referendum on peace or war. He has also accused Kyiv of seeking to topple his government and install a pro-Ukraine administration.

In May, there were a series of diplomatic expulsions between Hungary and Ukraine after Ukraine's main intelligence agency said that it had arrested two people on suspicion of spying for Hungary by gathering intelligence on Ukraine's military in the west of the country.

Costco Just Added This Perk for Executive Members — Is Upgrading Worth the Money?

 • Costco Just Added This Perk for Executive Members — Is Upgrading Worth the Money?

Josephine NesbitJuly 11, 2025 at 4:08 AM

Costco is bringing back a perk for its executive members. The warehouse club announced that it will now allow executive members to shop one hour earlier than standard members, according to an email sent to employees seen by Business Insider. The perk went into effect on June 30.

Read Next: I'm a Shopping Expert: These 10 Items Are the Best Frugal Buys at Costco

Find Out: 6 Things You Must Do When Your Savings Reach $50,000

Experts say it's a smart move on Costco's part, but whether or not it's the right move for you depends on your shopping habits. Here's what you before upgrading your Costco membership.

Trending Now: Suze Orman's Secret to a Wealthy Retirement--Have You Made This Money Move?

Costco's New Perk

Costco's new policy will give executive members the chance to shop early from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays and 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. Costco previously offered this perk at some locations, but it phased out over recent years, according to Costco Insider.

This isn't the only new perk Costco is offering to its executive members.

The warehouse club will also offer executive members a $10 monthly credit for Instacart orders and $150 worth of additional benefits and savings at Costco services.

"They have tried a variety of tactics to market the executive membership to non-executive home shoppers and the name and the increase in membership cost — despite the benefits — haven't translated," Julie Ferris-Tillman, VP and B2B practice lead at Interdependence Public Relations, wrote in an email.

"Turning to the competitive nature of shoppers who already line up at store open to avoid long lines and secure limited product is a logical move," she added.

Liam Hunt, director of research at IncomeInsider.org, also believes it's a great move.

"I'm a big fan of Costco's new policy simply from a business psychology standpoint," he explained. "It's a smart strategy because it costs Costco almost nothing to provide, but provides a real sense of value and exclusivity in executive-tier members."

Is an Executive Membership Now Worth the Money?

A Costco membership starts at $65 per year for its standard Gold Star membership, while the executive membership costs twice as much at $130 per year. According to the company, executive members account for more than 73% of total sales.

Is it worth the money? Ferris-Tillman believes that early access will offer better returns than the current promise of a rebate check at the end of the year.

But according to Hunt, it depends on your spending patterns.

"Whether executive membership is right for you entirely depends on your spending patterns rather than perks like early access," Hunt explained. You need to spend about $3,000 annually at Costco to break even on an executive membership through the 2% cash back alone, he added.

"That said, early shopping does create a sense of VIP treatment that makes customers feel as if their membership fee is justified. It's smart marketing, but not a difference-maker when it all comes down to annual spending," he noted.

An older woman took to Reddit to defend her bathing suit choice

A woman shared that she was called "inappropriate" for wearing a bikini to her 19-year-old granddaughter's birthday pool party

Her granddaughter picked out her bathing suit when they went shopping for outfits together

An older woman is defending her bathing suit choice.

The woman, 67, shared in a post on Reddit's "Am I the A------" forum that she wore a bikini to her 19-year-old granddaughter's birthday pool party after they went shopping for outfits together. However, she was later told that her bathing suit choice was "inappropriate" by her own daughter.

The grandmother said that the birthday girl picked out a variety of bathing suits for her to choose to wear to her special day. She explained that "all her suggestions were two-piece bikinis." When the older woman explained that she would usually go for a more modest choice, the teenager said that people her age aren't "that judgemental."

getty

Stock photo of an adult woman in a bikini

With her granddaughter's support, the woman wore a bikini to the pool party. She felt "flattered" that the swimwear was suggested to her and she didn't want her granddaughter "to feel she will have to hide herself when she gets older."

However, the bathing suit choice did not sit well with others at the party. The Reddit poster continued to share that her 44-year-old daughter told her after the party that "it was inappropriate for a woman my age to wear that in front [of] a bunch of college-aged youngsters." Her daughter then noted her own choice of a one-piece bathing suit instead of a two-piece.

When the woman asked if she was in the wrong in the situation, many people in the comments section assured her that she was right to wear her swimsuit of choice.

"The birthday girl picked it out and wanted you to wear the bikini," wrote one person. "As long as you and the birthday girl were comfortable, that's all that matters. No one ever died from seeing an older woman in a bikini. Your daughter needs to get over herself and her judgement."

Another insisted that there "isn't an age limit on wearing a two-piece."

A third commentator said, "You wore what you felt comfortable in and your granddaughter picked it out. You weren't trying to perform for anyone, no, you were only there to celebrate her, not to draw attention or make a statement."

The person added that the issue is her daughter's reaction, stating that she's "policing your body based on age, not behavior."

"There's no rule that says at 67 you have to hide your midsection or legs or shoulders. Bodies don't expire at a certain age. If anything, older women should feel more freedom, not less," they added.

Another Reddit user expressed that the daughter was in the wrong for placing her own insecurities on her mother. "It's absolutely okay if she has those restrictions on herself, but they shouldn't be projected onto anyone else," they wrote.
