By Nora Eckert and Abhirup Roy

DETROIT (Reuters) -Automakers are urging customers to snap up electric vehicles before a $7,500 U.S. tax credit goes away this fall.

Tesla's homepage on Tuesday displayed a banner: "$7,500 Federal Tax Credit Ending. Take Delivery by September 30, 2025."

The same day, Ford Motor extended its deal for free home chargers and installation through the end of September to entice EV shoppers.

Sweeping tax and budget legislation approved by Congress will eliminate $7,500 tax credits for buying or leasing new electric vehicles and a $4,000 used-EV credit at the end of September. The subsidies have boosted EV sales in recent years, and some dealers and analysts expect shoppers to rush to take advantage of the credit before it expires.

"This is certainly a great time to be considering an EV," Rivian's finance chief Claire McDonough said in an interview on Tuesday. Once the tax credits end, Rivian might introduce additional incentives, including financing deals, depending how the broader industry reacts, she said.

Demand for battery-powered models already has slowed after rapid growth earlier this decade. Sales could drop after the credits dry up, auto executives and analysts have warned.

"The $7,500 tax credit is driving demand; without that, that'll slow," General Motors CEO Mary Barra said at an event in December 2024.

Electric vehicle registrations could fall 27% without the tax credit, according to a joint study in November from professors at the University of California, Berkeley; Duke University and Stanford University.

Such policy shifts have affected EV adoption in other countries. EV sales fell sharply in Germany after subsidies ended in late 2023.

Congress approved a $7,500 tax credit in 2008 for electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act extended the credit, while also limiting eligibility to EVs built in the U.S. that use certain levels of domestically sourced batteries and materials.

"We believe (the third quarter) will see a significant EV pre-buy, with sharp declines in the months to follow," said Barclays analysts in a note.

Dmitry Agapitov, sales manager at Northwood Chevrolet and Hyundai in Eureka, California, cited major sales bumps at his dealership ahead of past deadlines, including in spring, as buyers shopped to avoid tariff-related price hikes. He expects a similar sales spike this time.

"We're anticipating it to play a factor," he said.

Battery-powered models could get a much-needed jolt. EVs have been a hard sell because of concerns around insufficient charging infrastructure and high prices, surveys show. A new EV sold for about $58,000 on average in May, almost $10,000 more than the average new price across the industry, according to Cox Automotive data.

U.S. President Donald Trump's team has been strategizing since late 2024, before his inauguration, about how to kill tax credits for electric vehicles. Some consumers took early notice and bumped up their EV purchases.

"If there's anyone who hasn't bought their EV yet, they're likely to be encouraged to buy in the third quarter. Consumers believe there is a deadline to reach now," said Sam Fiorani, vice president at research firm AutoForecast Solutions.

In the past, automakers have increased consumer incentives to help offset the loss of tax subsidies. Ford slashed prices on its Mustang Mach-E after it lost a $3,750 tax credit in January 2024 and sales dropped. GM offered a $7,500 incentive on vehicles that lost the credits.

Injury-hit pace bowler Jofra Archer will play his first cricket test for England in 4 1/2 years after being selected for the third match of the series against India starting Thursday at Lord's.

It was at the home of cricket where Archer exploded onto the international scene, playing a starring role in England's victory over New Zealand in the 50-over Cricket World Cup final in 2019 — soon after switching nationality.

The Barbados-born quick has been blighted by a succession of injuries since, chiefly because of nagging issues with his right elbow for which he has undergone two operations. His most recent test appearance for his adopted country was against India in Ahmedabad in February 2021.

Archer will make his test return against the same opponent, having missed the first two tests which were shared by England and India. He will replace Josh Tongue in the only change from the second test at Edgbaston, which India won by 336 runs.

England captain Ben Stokes said Archer's return "has been a long time coming."

"The way in which he has handled the injury setbacks over that period has been very commendable," Stokes said.

"It was exciting to have him back in the squad but now to say he is in the playing XI, it's very exciting for the group but a great day for Jof and he is going to be pretty proud of himself that he has managed to get back here."

Devastating test debut

It will be just his 14th test for England since making a devastating debut in the longest format — also at Lord's — during the Ashes series against Australia in August 2019, when he shook up Steve Smith in a memorably hostile spell.

"I think it's obvious whenever he does get the ball in his hand, there is that change in the game," Stokes said. "I think the opposition feel it because they know what he can do in a spell.

"I don't think there's any reason why we cant see Jofra operating at a level like we have seen him here at Lord's on his debut."

Stokes confident

Archer's injury woes appear to have cleared up somewhat and he has played regularly for England's ODI and T20 teams over the past year, as well as for teams in the IPL and England. He most recently came through a red-ball County Championship match for Sussex, his only first-class game in which he has proved his fitness.

Asked if that was enough to show Archer's readiness to play India, Stokes said: "Stop having as a default going to the worst (scenario). We are a very good nation at doing that.

"If we didn't think he's in a position to get through a test match as a bowler, then we wouldn't be considering him for selection."

LONDON (AP) — The Bayeux Tapestry, the 11th-century artwork depicting the Norman conquest of England, will be displayed in the U.K. for the first time in almost 1,000 years.

Officials said Tuesday that the treasured medieval tapestry will be on loan from France and arrive next year at the British Museum, where it will star in a blockbuster exhibition from September 2026 to July 2027.

The loan was announced during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to the U.K.

The fragile 70-meter (230-foot) cloth depicts the events leading up to the conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. The artwork was believed to have been commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux and has been displayed in various locations across France, including most recently at the Bayeux Museum in Normandy.

"The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most iconic pieces of art ever produced in the U.K. and I am delighted that we will be able to welcome it here in 2026," Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said in a statement.

"This loan is a symbol of our shared history with our friends in France, a relationship built over centuries and one that continues to endure," she added.

In return, the British Museum will loan treasures from the Sutton Hoo collection — artifacts from a 7th century Anglo Saxon ship burial — to museums in Normandy. The excavation of Sutton Hoo was dramatized in the 2021 film "The Dig" starring Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan.

Other items to be loaned to France include the Lewis Chessmen, the mysterious medieval chess pieces carved from walrus tusks and whales' teeth dating from around the 12th century that were discovered on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland.

Six days after signing, João Pedro scores twice to send Chelsea to Club World Cup final

João Pedro scored twice, just six days after signing for Chelsea, as his new team booked its spot in the FIFA Club World Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Fluminense at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday.

Pedro opened the scoring just 18 minutes into his first start, curling home from just outside the box.

The Brazilian then doubled Chelsea's lead in the 56th minute as his powerful effort clipped the bar and went into the Fluminense net to cap off a swift counterattack.

Chelsea will now face either Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's final, with the two European giants playing in the tournament's other semifinal on Wednesday.

After the game, Pedro called his two-goal debut for Chelsea a "dream first start."

"I don't think it could've been better," the 23-year-old said. "I'm very happy. I want to help the team. I knew I could score today, and that's what I did. The team controlled the game today, did really well today and now we're focused on the final.

"I think we have a great team, great players and it's a pleasure to play with them. I think this season can be a great season for us."

Pedro completed his reported $82 million (£60 million) move to Chelsea from fellow Premier League team Brighton and Hove Albion last week. Last season, he scored 19 goals in all competitions to finish as Brighton's joint-top scorer.

After signing, he was immediately added to Chelsea's Club World Cup squad, coming off the bench in the Blues' quarterfinal victory over Palmeiras.

The Brazilian was thrown into the starting lineup for the semifinal after the suspension of Liam Delap – another summer signing for Chelsea – ruled the Englishman out.

It had the desired effect as Pedro's inch-perfect curled effort in the 18th minute gave Chelsea an early lead.

The goal sparked the game into life and Fluminense thought it had equalized on the 25-minute mark when Germán Cano's poked shot looked to be heading into the goal, only for Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella to clear it off the line at the last minute.

The moment gave the Brazilian side renewed hope and it was awarded a penalty shortly afterwards for handball, only for a video assistant referee (VAR) review to result in referee François Letexier reversing his decision.

Fluminense's pressure then kicked Chelsea into gear offensively, with Pedro getting his second of the game when his rifled effort slammed off the bar and into the back of the net.

Pedro showed his finishing prowess with his two goals against Fluminense. - Luke Hales/Getty Images

After both his goals, Pedro raised his hands aloft in a sign of respect, having started his career at both the youth and senior levels at Fluminense.

Pedro stressed the place the Rio-based club still holds in his heart after the victory.

"I've got mixed feelings," Pedro told FIFA. "I apologize for the two goals. This is my job. I'm sad to see some of the players I played alongside, some of the staff I know upset. Seeing their sadness is difficult because I know this was their dream.

"I'm sorry, but the Fluminense fans know how much I love the club. I hope to return to Fluminense one day. I can't predict the future, but I hope we see each other again."

Pedro has started life as a Chelsea player emphatically and could win his first piece of silverware with his new team in Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

After the game, Blues manager Enzo Maresca expressed his pride at his team's performances at the tournament.

"We are very happy and very proud to play the final," the Italian said. "The reason why is that this is the Club World Cup, the best clubs in the world are here. So for us to be there (in the final) on Sunday is something we have to be proud and happy about."

Caitlin Clark took her Indiana Fever teammate Aliyah Boston with the first pick in the WNBA All-Star Game draft – and later turned down an offer to trade her.

Clark was given the No. 1 pick for the All-Star Game, which will be played on July 19 at Indiana's Gainbridge Fieldhouse, by coming top of the fan vote and later selected another Fever teammate in Kelsey Mitchell.

Napheesa Collier, the other team captain, took Breanna Stewart with her top pick and later offered Clark a straight swap between Stewart and Boston.

"Absolutely not," Clark laughed. "Not happening. I don't think Phee actually meant that, I think she just wanted to see how I would react."

Clark rounded off her star-studded team with the New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, Las Vegas Aces star and MVP A'ja Wilson and the Phoenix Mercury forward Satou Sabally, while Mitchell is a reserve.

Collier and Stewart will be joined in their starting five by the Atlanta Dream's Allisha Gray, Seattle Storm star Nneka Ogwumike and Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers, with Collier selecting Minnesota Lynx teammate Courtney Williams as first reserve.

Clark opted against drafting rival Angel Reese as a reserve, meaning the pair will face off this year after teaming up in 2024 to take on – and beat – the US Olympic team.

One trade that was agreed on, however, was that of the head coaches, with the New York Liberty's Sandy Brondello swapping to coach Team Clark, while Cheryl Reeves will now coach Team Collier.

Meanwhile, Clark is expected to make her highly anticipated return to the court when the Indiana Fever host the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday.

Clark has been out for two weeks with a groin injury and has missed five WNBA games, including the Commissioner's Cup final win against the Minnesota Lynx. The Fever are 3-2 in Clark's absence.

In her second season in the WNBA, Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.9 assists and 1.6 steals.

Mekies brings vast experience as he takes over F1 team Red Bull after Horner's sacking

July 9, 2025 at 9:21 PM

1 / 2F1 Red Bull MekiesFILE -RB team principal Laurent Mekies is interviewed on the grid before the Sprint race at the Miami Formula One Grand Prix, Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla. (AP Photo/Lynne Sladky, File)

MILTON KEYNES, England (AP) — Red Bull's Formula 1 team is changing team directors for the first time since it was founded 20 years ago, after Christian Horner's sacking sent shockwaves through the sport on Wednesday. But his replacement Laurent Mekies could be the calm presence the team needs amid what promises to be an intense period of scrutiny.

Mekies, who had been head of sister team Racing Bulls, brings vast experience to the role after he was hired to replace Horner as chief executive of Red Bull's F1 team.

The timing of Horner's firing at least gives him a little bit of time to prepare, as he takes charge of his first race at the Belgian GP on July 27.

Here are some things to know about Mekies:

What are his credentials?

The 48-year-old Frenchman has been in F1 since the early 2000s.

He worked as a race engineer with the Minardi team — which featured future Red Bull driver Mark Webber — and was among the Minardi staff who stayed when Red Bull took over and created the Toro Rosso team in 2005.

He brings vast experience, and F1 knowledge from both working inside teams and inside the institution of motor sport's governing body, FIA.

After leaving Toro Rosso in 2014, Mekies had a stint as the FIA's safety director during a crucial time as F1 made the "halo" protective device mandatory on cars, following the death of French F1 driver Jules Bianchi and British IndyCar driver Justin Wilson in 2015.

Ferrari role

Mekies returned to a team role in 2018, joining Italian F1 giant Ferrari as its sporting director, working alongside then-team principal Mattia Binotto.

He was promoted to race director, and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc once doused him with Champagne after winning the 2022 Austrian GP.

But erratic decision-making and botched pit stops by the team during races undermined Ferrari's bid to challenge at the top.

Mekies left Ferrari halfway during the 2023 season, following Binotto's departure at the end of 2022.

Racing Bulls

Mekies became team principal of the Racing Bulls team at the start of 2024.

When Yuki Tsunoda was promoted to the Red Bull team after just two rounds this season, Mekies said he was "incredibly proud" of Tsunoda's progress.

This season he also worked with rookie French driver Isack Hadjar, who has impressed in spells, and Liam Lawson after he was demoted from Red Bull to make way for Tsunoda.

Mekies will be replaced by Alan Permane at Racing Bulls, formerly the racing director.

"The last year and a half has been an absolute privilege to lead the team," Mekies said. "The spirit of the whole team is incredible, and I strongly believe that this is just the beginning. Alan is the perfect man to take over now and continue our path."

Challenges ahead

Looking further ahead, Mekies has much work to do at Red Bull with new technical regulations on cars coming up in 2026.

"The challenge is huge, probably the biggest for the teams," he said recently. "I'm sure the teams will need the drivers to help them develop in the right direction (and) help them grasp these regulations."
