(Reuters) -Telstra Group, Australia's top telecom operator, said on Wednesday that it plans to lay off 550 employees as part of an ongoing overhaul of its enterprise business and structural changes across other parts of the organisation.

The 550 affected roles represent less than 2% of Telstra's total full-time workforce of 31,876, as of the end of last year.

The decision follows Telstra's move to terminate around 1,900 employees last year as part of a broader overhaul of its enterprise business and cost-cutting measures in its network applications and services business.

"These changes are largely driven by the ongoing reset of our Telstra Enterprise business, as well as improvements to the structure and processes of other teams across our organisation," Telstra spokesperson told Reuters in an email.

The company clarified that the proposed job cuts are not related to its adoption of artificial intelligence.

Turkey blocks X's Grok chatbot for alleged insults to Erdogan

ANKARA (Reuters) -A Turkish court has blocked access to Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by the Elon Musk-founded company xAI, after it generated responses that authorities said included insults to President Tayyip Erdogan.

Issues of political bias, hate speech and accuracy of AI chatbots have been a concern since at least the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022, with Grok dropping content accused of antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler.

The office of Ankara's chief prosecutor has launched a formal investigation into the incident, it said on Wednesday, in Turkey's first such ban on access to an AI tool.

Neither X nor its owner Elon Musk has commented on the decision.

Last month, Musk promised an upgrade to Grok, suggesting there was "far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data".

Grok, which is integrated into X, reportedly generated offensive content about Erdogan when asked certain questions in Turkish, media said.

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) adopted the ban after a court order, citing violations of Turkey's laws that make insults to the president a criminal offence, punishable with up to four years in jail.

Critics say the law is frequently used to stifle dissent, while the government maintains it is necessary to protect the dignity of the office.

MARSEILLE, France (AP) — A wildfire that reached France's second-largest city and left 110 injured was pushed back overnight but was not yet extinguished Wednesday, authorities said. Marseille's mayor lifted a confinement order for tens of thousands of people.

Mayor Benoit Payan said on broadcaster France-Info that the fire was in ''net regression'' Wednesday morning after racing toward the historic Mediterranean port city Tuesday, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate and the population of an entire city district to barricade themselves indoors on official orders.

Spurred by hot summer winds, the fire grounded all flights to and from Marseille and halted train traffic in most of the surrounding area Tuesday. Train, road and plane traffic remained complicated Wednesday.

The mayor said 110 people were treated for smoke inhalation and related injuries.

More than 1,000 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fire, which broke out near the town of Les Pennes-Mirabeau before racing toward Marseille. Some 720 hectares were hit by the blaze, the prefecture said.

The prefecture described the fire as ''particularly virulent.″ It came on a cloudless, windy day after a lengthy heat wave around Europe left the area parched and at heightened risk for wildfires. Several have broken out in southern France in recent days, including one in the Aude region that has burned some 2,000 hectares and continued to rage Wednesday.

Light gray smoke gave the sky over Marseille's old port a dusty aspect as water-dropping planes tried to extinguish the fire in the outskirts of the city, which has some 900,000 inhabitants.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia fired a record 728 Shahed and decoy drones at Ukraine overnight, as well as 13 missiles, the Ukrainian air force said Wednesday, in the latest escalation amid mounting Russian aerial attacks in the more than three-year war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the city of Lutsk, in Ukraine's northwest, bordering Poland and Belarus, was the hardest hit, though 10 other regions were also struck.

Lutsk is home to airfields used by the Ukrainian army. Cargo planes and fighter jets routinely fly over the city.

Ukraine's air defenses shot down 296 drones and seven missiles, while 415 more drones were lost from radars or jammed, an air force statement said.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China imposed export controls Wednesday on eight companies tied to Taiwan's military as the self-ruled island started annual military exercises.

China's Commerce Ministry added eight Taiwan-based firms including aerospace and shipbuilding companies, to an export control list, citing national and regional security concerns.

The banned companies include defense supplier Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), drone maker Jingwei Aerospace Technology Co., and CSBC Corporation, Taiwan's largest shipbuilding company.

The new rules, effective immediately, prohibit the export to the listed enterprises of "dual-use items," a term referring to goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.

The ban comes just as Taiwan begins its annual Han Kuang military drills, which will simulate defenses against a possible invasion by China. This year's drills are set to be the largest and longest ever, lasting about 10 days, twice as long as last year's exercises.

China regards self-ruled Taiwan as its own territory, to be annexed by force if necessary. Beijing has branded Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te as a separatist and refuses to speak to him.

The United States, like most countries, doesn't recognize Taiwan as a country, but is bound by its own laws to provide it with the means to defend itself.
