WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Nick Kurtz hit a grand slam, Lawrence Butler homered twice and the Athletics beat the Atlanta Braves 10-1 on Tuesday night.

The Braves have lost five straight and seven of eight.

Jeffrey Springs (7-6) pitched six innings and gave up a run — a solo shot by Eli White in the fifth — on six hits.

Butler led off the first inning with an inside-the-park home run. Jacob Wilson was hit on the wrist by the next pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner Max Schuemann before Brent Rooker and Max Muncy each hit two-run homers to make it 5-0.

Butler hit a solo shot in the third to make it 10-0.

Didier Fuentes (0-3) — the youngest active player in the majors at 20 years and 21 days old — pitched one-plus innings and gave up eight runs on five hits, which included three homers.

Justin Sterner threw two hitless innings of relief before Elvis Alvarado pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Athletics.

All-Star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. (back tightness) did not play for the Braves.

Key moment

Denzel Clarke hit a leadoff single in the second inning, Butler walked and Schuemann singled to load the bases and chase Fuentes. Jesse Chavez came on gave Kurtz hit his first career grand slam.

Key stat

Butler became the first A's player to hit a leadoff inside-the-park homer since Elmer Valo on June 25, 1943.

Up next

Atlanta's Bryce Elder (2-6, 5.92 ERA) is scheduled to pitch Wednesday against Mitch Spence (2-4, 4.06) in the second of a three-game series.

Jenna Bush Hager mourns Texas flooding victims: 'Our hearts are heavy'

 • Jenna Bush Hager mourns Texas flooding victims: 'Our hearts are heavy'

KiMi Robinson, USA TODAY July 8, 2025 at 11:55 PM

"A homesick Texan living in New York," Jenna Bush Hager is mourning the tragedy that has unfolded in Central Texas.

"We have to start just saying our hearts are heavy this morning thinking of my home state of Texas. Obviously there (was) devastating flooding," Bush Hager somberly said on "Today with Jenna and Friends" on July 7. Heavy rainfall overwhelmed the Guadalupe River last week, sending floodwaters roaring through homes and area summer camps.

The death toll rose to at least 110, including at least 27 children and counselors from the beloved Camp Mystic in Kerr County, where flooding hit the hardest beginning July 4. Bush Hager explained her connection to the nearly 100-year-old nondenominational Christian camp for girls.

She told guest co-host Dwayne Wade that her mom, former first lady Laura Bush, was a counselor at Camp Mystic and that many of her friends attended the camp. "It is a place that raised so many girls to become women, and it was almost like a spiritual, beautiful place," she added.

Harrowing stories of survival: Clinging to trees, huddling on rooftops amid Texas floods

She reflected: "I think as parents, we think about the horror of sending our kids to a place that's supposed to be — and is — healing and fun and joyful and all the things that kids deserve to have, and then something like this (happened)."

Bush Hager, 43, revealed she had just dropped off her kids "at another camp in Texas" and described "putting them on the bus and saying goodbye to them" as an emotional experience. She shares daughters Mila, 12, and Poppy, 9, as well as her son, Hal, 5, with husband Henry Chase Hager.

"I know so many parents whose kids are at camp or going to camp feel that way. We send our kids into the world with the faith that they can have happy lives, joyful lives, and as adults we know pain," the TV host said. "We hope that our kids never face it."

"But Texas is a resilient, incredible state," she continued. "And it always is in my heart."

Wade, who has five children, three of whom are adults, also empathized with Bush Hager.

"Just as parents, there are certain places that we send our kids, (and) we feel those are places of safety for them ... because we know the growth and evolution that happens at these places," the former NBA star said. "But tragedy also occurs, and it's so unfortunate."

Jenna, sister Barbara chat about their grandparents, raising kids

Bush Hager also praised people's generosity during the time of grief.

"The stories that I heard over the last couple of days were beautiful and heartbreaking," she explained. "Texas has a type of resilience where they're generous people, where people want to reach out and help."

Bush Hager directed viewers to the American Red Cross to find ways to help.

Video game performers vote on contract that could end nearly three-year-long battle over AI

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Results from a union member vote on a tentative contract between video game performers and their employers are expected Wednesday evening.

If ratified, the contract would formally end a nearly three-year-long effort from Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists negotiators to obtain a new contract for video game performers. The process, which included an 11-month strike against several major game makers, hinged on how artificial intelligence would affect performers in the industry.

If approved, the agreement will deliver pay raises, control over performers' likenesses and artificial intelligence protections. The contract was first reached in early June between the union and an industry bargaining group consisting of several major video game companies, including divisions of Activision and Electronic Arts. The nearly year-long strike was suspended on June 11 and about 3,000 SAG-AFTRA members covered by the interactive media agreement have had since June 18 to vote.

Results will be announced soon after the vote ends at 5 p.m. Pacific.

The 11-month strike "was a grueling and excruciating process, " Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator said before the voting period closed.

"I hope and I believe that our members, when they look back on this, will say all of the sacrifices and difficulty we put ourselves through to achieve this agreement will ultimately be worth it because we do have the key elements that we need to feel confident and moving forward in this business," Crabtree-Ireland said.

The new contract secures "industry-leading" AI protections, said Audrey Cooling, a spokesperson for the video game producers involved in the deal. The proposed contract delineates clear restrictions on when and how video game companies can create digital replicas, which use AI to generate new performances that weren't recorded by an actor.

What's part of the tentative video game performers contract

Employers must obtain written permission from a performer to create a digital replica — consent which must be granted during the performer's lifetime and is valid after death unless otherwise limited, the contract states.

The time spent creating a digital replica will be compensated as work time, according to the agreement. The agreement also requires the employer to provide the performer with a usage report that details how the replica was used and calculates the expected compensation.

The contract also secured an increase in performer compensation of just over 15% upon ratification and an additional 3% increase each year of the three-year contract.

Increasing awareness and knowledge about the new AI provisions among union membership is crucial moving forward if the contract is ratified, Sarah Elmaleh, a voice actor and chair of the union's interactive branch negotiating committee, told The before the voting period closed.

"Actually applying these guardrails in our work is going to take members paying attention, understanding what they should look out for, being engaged with their union and reporting things that look fishy or that are actually violations," she said.

Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry-Housley reunited for a birthday getaway to celebrate turning 47

The twins were joined by their children, brothers, an in-law and their father for the family vacation

"I love you more than words can say. Here's to us, to sisterhood, and spending our birthday today! Together," Mowry-Housley said

Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry-Housley are back together again.

The twins spent their 47th birthdays together and documented it with sweet photos from a family trip.

"And just like that we are 47 :)," Tia captioned a Monday, July 6, Instagram carousel. Her cover photo was a selfie of her and Tamera smiling while outdoors on a camping trip.

Their younger brothers, 39-year-old Tahj Mowry and 32-year-old Tavior Mowry, were also present.

A second post from Tia on Tuesday, July 7, showed her and Tamera sipping wine at a vineyard. The ladies were also joined by their children, Tavior's wife Zandy Fitzgerald and their two kids, plus the Mowry patriarch, Timothy Mowry.

In addition to wine tasting for the adults, there was fishing for the whole family. That one was simply captioned, "The Mowrys," with a sun emoji.

Tamera posted a tribute to her twin and Sister, Sister costar as well.

"Happy 47th birthday to my twin, Tia! 🩷 It's crazy to think we've been doing life together for 47 years. From the silly moments to the tough ones, you've always had this determination to keep going and growing — no matter what life throws your way," she wrote.

"I love you more than words can say. Here's to us, to sisterhood, and spending our birthday today! Together," Tamera continued in her own carousel with photos of them throughout the years.

The celebration comes months after Tia said she wished she and Tamera were "still close."

She made the comment in a September 2024 preview for her then-new WE TV series, Tia Mowry: My Next Act.

In the clip, Tia explained how the relationships in her life had changed following her divorce from Cory Hardrict, who she was married to for 14 years. The former couple share two children.

"I came into this world with a twin and right after that, I went into a 22-year relationship so I have never been alone in my life. It has been quite a journey," she said. "Being alone has been the most challenging part of my divorce."

Tia and Tamera Mowry on Sister, Sister

Tia added, "It's times like this when I feel and wish that my sister and I were still close and I could pick up the phone and call her," she said, speaking directly to the camera. "But that's just not where we are right now."

A source later told PEOPLE, Tia's comments about not being "close" to her sister were actually about geography, noting that the comment was "about the lack of proximity in their physical location" given that Tamera lives in Napa and Tia lives in Los Angeles.

Texas inspectors approved Camp Mystic's disaster plan 2 days before deadly flood, records show

HUNT, Texas (AP) — Texas inspectors signed off on Camp Mystic's emergency planning just two days before catastrophic flooding killed more than two dozen people at the all-girls Christian summer camp, most of them children.

The Department of State Health Services released records Tuesday showing the camp complied with a host of state regulations regarding "procedures to be implemented in case of a disaster." Among them: instructing campers what to do if they need to evacuate and assigning specific duties to each staff member and counselor.

Five years of inspection reports released to The do not offer any details of those plans at Mystic, raising new questions about the camp's preparedness ahead of the torrential July 4 rainfall in flood-prone Texas Hill Country.

The National Weather Service had issued a flood watch for the area July 3 at 1:18 p.m. That danger prompted at least one of the roughly 18 camps along the Guadalupe River to move dozens of campers to higher ground.

The uncertainty about what happened at Mystic comes as local officials have repeatedly dodged questions about who was monitoring the weather and what measures were taken ahead of the flooding.

Tragedy falls on the historic camp

Camp Mystic, established in 1926, did not evacuate and was especially hit hard when the river rose from 14 feet (4.2 meters) to 29.5 feet (9 meters) within 60 minutes in the early morning hours. Flooding on that stretch of the Guadalupe starts at about 10 feet (3 meters).

A wall of water overwhelmed people in cabins, tents and trailers along the river's edge. Some survivors were found clinging to trees.

At least 27 campers and counselors died during the floods, and officials said Tuesday that five campers and one counselor have still not been found. Among the dead was Richard "Dick" Eastland, the camp's beloved director described by campers as a father figure.

Charlotte Lauten, 19, spent nine summers at Camp Mystic, mostly recently in 2023. She said she didn't recall ever receiving instructions as a camper on what do in the case of a weather emergency.

"I do know that the counselors go through orientation training for a week before camp starts," she said. "They do brief them on all those types of things."

One thing that likely hindered the girls' ability to escape was how dark it would have been, Lauten said. Campers don't have access to their phones while at camp, she said, adding they wouldn't have cell service anyway because of the remote location.

"This is the middle of nowhere and they didn't have power," she said. "It would have been pitch black, like could not see 5 feet in front of you type of darkness. I've never seen stars like there because there's just no light."

Inspections found no issues

The state inspected Camp Mystic on July 2, the same day the Texas Division of Emergency Management activated emergency response resources ahead of the anticipated flooding.

The inspection found no deficiencies or violations at the camp in a long list of health and safety criteria. The camp had 557 campers and more than 100 staffers at the time between its Guadalupe and Cypress Lake locations.

The disaster plans are required to be posted in all camp buildings but aren't filed with the state, said Lara Anton, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

"We do not have them," Anton said in an email. "You'd have to get it from the camp."

Camp Mystic did not respond to requests for comment on its emergency plan. In a statement on its website, the camp said it has been "in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls."

Camps are responsible for developing their own emergency plan. Inspectors evaluate the plans to ensure they meet several state requirements, including procedures for evacuation.

"The inspector checked that they had plans posted for those elements in every building," Anton said, "and that they had trained staff and volunteers on what to do."

Camp Mystic is licensed by the state and a member of the Camping Association for Mutual Progress, which says its goal is to "raise health and safety standards" for summer camps. Leaders of that association didn't return messages.

The American Camp Association said Tuesday that Camp Mystic is not accredited with that organization, whose standards focus on safety and risk management. Spokesperson Lauren McMillin declined to say whether the camp previously had been accredited with the association, which describes itself as "the only nationwide accrediting organization for all year-round and summer camps."

Authorities review rain and river gauges

One rain gauge about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Camp Mystic recorded 9.5 inches (24 centimeters) of precipitation July 4, according to Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority data. Another of the agency's gauges — further south and to the west — recorded 12.2 inches (31 centimeters) of precipitation. The authority told the AP that a review of its equipment found both were functioning during the flood event.

However, at least four United States Geological Survey gauges along the Guadalupe River experienced some level of failure July 4.

The gauges, located near Hunt and Kerrville, stopped collecting both river levels and the flow rate of water in the early morning hours of July 4.

One gauge, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of Camp Mystic, recorded a level of 29.5 feet (9 meters) at 4:35 a.m., according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data. It was the last recorded river level from the instrumentation until a USGS hydrologist installed a temporary gauge. At the time, the hydrologist measured the high water mark at 37.52 feet (11.44 meters).

At that location, a river level of 32 feet (9.75 meters) could lead to "disastrous life-threatening flooding," which could cover the roads of the lowest camps and resorts, according to NOAA.

___

This story has been to correct that the rain gauge that recorded 9.5 inches (24 centimeters) of precipitation was about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Camp Mystic, not 1,500 feet (460 meters).

___
