<p>If the ratings for the 2025 Wimbledon men's singles final are any judge, fans are starting to embrace tennis' newest generation.</p>

<p>The final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, which Sinner won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, drew an average of 2.9 million viewers on ESPN, the network announced Wednesday. The numbers reportedly peaked at 4 million viewers at the end of the match.</p>

<p>On the women's side, Iga Swiatek's 6-0, 6-0 double-bageling of Amanda Anisimova in the final averaged only 1.3 million viewers, not a surprise given how non-competitive the match was.</p>

<p>That men's viewership isn't just a 31% increase from last year's final between Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. It's the best number the tournament has seen since the 2019 final between Djokovic and Roger Federer, the last time two members of the sport's previous Big 3 (with Rafael Nadal) squared off at Wimbledon. That 2019 match saw an average of 3.8 million viewers tuned in.</p>

<p>Since then, Wimbledon has seen finals featuring Djokovic against lesser opponents in 2021 and 2022 and Alcaraz beating Djokovic in 2022 and 2023. The tournament was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>From the time Federer and Nadal began declining more than half a decade ago, tennis has been waiting for a new generation to take over after watching three guys win 45 of 59 Grand Slams from 2004-24. Add in Andy Murray and it becomes 48 of 59.</p>

<p>Some talented players have emerged, and even won a Slam in the cases of Daniil Medvedev and Dominic Thiem, but none of them stuck until the 23-year-old Sinner and 22-year-old Alcaraz. Together, the Italian and Spaniard have won every Grand Slam since Djokovic's most recent title at the 2023 U.S. Open and are now entering seemingly every major tournament on a collision course with each other.</p>

<p>It appeared the sport of tennis would be in a worse place when Djokovic, the previous generation's standard-bearer, called it a career, which he has been hinting at recently. Now, there are two more players on pace for an all-time career, with plenty of tennis ahead of them.</p>

<p>NEW YORK (AP) — Breanna Stewart had 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists to help the New York Liberty to a 98-77 win Wednesday night over the Indiana Fever, who played without star guard Caitlin Clark.</p>

<p>Clark missed the game after injuring her right groin on Tuesday night in the final minute of the game against Connecticut in Boston. Clark has a busy weekend ahead as Indiana is hosting the WNBA All-Star Game and she's slated to compete in the 3-point contest and is captain of one of the two teams.</p>

<p>Sabrina Ionescu, who will also be in the 3-point contest, added 15 points and nine assists for the Liberty (15-6).</p>

<p>Stewart got the Liberty off to a strong start as they led 32-24 after one quarter and were up 15 at the half. The Liberty's All-Star forward had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists by the break.</p>

<p>New York put the game away in the third quarter behind Stewart, whose three-point play with 3:57 left made it 71-48 much to the delight of the crowd of 17,371. The Fever could only get within 15 the rest of the way.</p>

<p>Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana (12-11) with 16 points. The Fever fell to 4-6 when Clark has missed a regular season game this season.</p>

<p>New York was still missing star center Jonquel Jones. She said she plans to be back for the Liberty's first game after the All-Star break on Tuesday which is also against Indiana. She's been sidelined with a sprained ankle for about a month.</p>

<p>Joaquin Phoenix is still haunted by one of his most awkward late-night moments in TV.</p>

<p>During Tuesday's appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Phoenix reflected on his now-infamous 2009 interview with David Letterman, calling it "one of the worst nights of my life."</p>

<p>"Yeah, it was strange," Phoenix said, after Colbert pointed out it had been 15 years since his last appearance on the show. "Because in some ways it was a success and it was also just one of the worst nights of my life."</p>

<p>The Eddington actor, 50, was promoting the Casey Affleck-directed mockumentary I'm Still Here at the time of the original Late Show with David Letterman interview.</p>

<p>Phoenix had adopted a disheveled, mumbling persona in public as part of the film, claiming to have retired from acting to become a hip-hop artist. That persona followed him onto Letterman's stage — with memorably uncomfortable results.</p>

<p>"As part of the promotion for a film that I had made, I was coming on the show, and so I was stuck," Phoenix told Colbert. "I had to keep it going."</p>

<p>He admitted he tried to give Letterman a heads-up.</p>

<p>"When I came on the show with Dave, I originally did the pre-interview in character, and I realized that it was just a little silly," he said. "So I called them back and I said, 'Listen, this is what I'm doing. I'm coming out here and I'm doing this whole thing. I just want Dave to like lacerate me, I just want it to be really dangerous.'"</p>

<p>Still, the result was deeply regrettable: "It was horrible, it was so uncomfortable, I regret it," he said. "I'll never do it again. I'm so sorry."</p>

<p>Colbert noted that Letterman may not be watching, but Phoenix made a point to offer an apology anyway: "He might be, and I just need to say I'm sorry."</p>

<p>Phoenix did return to Letterman's show in 2010 for a follow-up appearance after the mockumentary's release, but joked to Colbert, "I imagine they did like a major exorcism after I left."</p>

<p>Phoenix's latest film, Eddington, also stars Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone. The movie hits theaters July 18.</p>

<p>ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — A'ja Wilson scored a season-high 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season and the Las Vegas Aces held off a late rally to beat the Dallas Wings 90-86 on Wednesday night.</p>

<p>Wilson, who had 34 points and 16 rebounds in a 104-102 win over Golden State on Saturday, finished 15 of 25 from the field to reach 30-plus points for the fourth time this season. Her 37 points tied for most points in a WNBA game this season.</p>

<p>Las Vegas created separation in the third quarter by going on an 18-2 run to build a 70-48 lead. The Aces scored 12 straight points during the run as Dallas went scoreless for three-plus minutes.</p>

<p>The Wings rallied in the fourth, opening on a 9-1 run to get within 73-61 on a 3-pointer by Paige Bueckers. Dallas added a 3-pointer on three straight possessions to cut its deficit to 86-82 with 1:04 left.</p>

<p>Bueckers made a baseline jumper with 26.5 seconds left to pull within 86-84, but Wilson was fouled while making a layup at the other end for a four-point lead. The Wings missed two 3-pointers and the Aces made their free throws.</p>

<p>Jewell Loyd added 14 points and Aaliyah Nye had 13 for Las Vegas (11-11). Jackie Young injured her right hip early in the fourth and did not return.</p>

<p>Bueckers scored 10 of her 20 points in the fourth and rookie JJ Quinerly added 17 for Dallas (6-17). Luisa Geiselsoder scored a career-high 14 points — all in the first half. Arike Ogunbowale was held to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.</p>

<p>WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump signed a law that extends tougher prison sentences for fentanyl trafficking, surrounded by relatives of people who died from overdoses and lawmakers who approved the bill.</p>

<p>"Today we strike a righteous blow to the drug dealers, narcotic traffickers and criminal cartels," Trump said. "We take a historic step toward justice for every family touched by the fentanyl scourge."</p>

<p>The law places fentanyl on the Drug Enforcement Administration's list of most serious drugs with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The list includes drugs such as heroin, cocaine and LSD. Fentanyl has been temporarily assigned to the Schedule 1 category since 2018. The law makes the designation permanent.</p>

<p>The law also makes permanent mandatory minimum penalties of five years in prison for trafficking 10 grams of fentanyl and 10 years for 100 grams.</p>

<p>"It doesn't sound like much, but it's a big deal," Trump said.</p>

<p>The Department of Homeland Security seized 27,000 pounds of fentanyl and arrested 3,600 criminal suspects in 2024.</p>

<p>More than 105,000 people nationwide died of drug overdoses in 2023, including nearly 73,000 from synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.</p>

<p>The crackdown on fentanyl distribution is also at the heart of current U.S. trade disputes with China, Mexico and Canada. Trump imposed tariffs on those countries, citing the threat of cross-border fentanyl trafficking.</p>

<p>"We are delivering another defeat for the savage drug smugglers and criminals and the cartels," Trump said.</p>

<p>Parents of several people who died after overdosing on fentanyl spoke at the event.</p>

<p>Anne Fundner, whose 15-year-old son Weston died of an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2022, previously spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last year.</p>

<p>"It is a lifeline for families across America for keeping our families safe," Fundner said of the legislation. "This is what we voted for, Mr. President."</p>

<p>Gregory Swan, whose 24-year-old son Drew died of fentanyl poisoning, started a group known as Fentanyl Fathers, in which parents tell their story to high schools across America.</p>

<p>"His passing ruined, I thought, my life," Swan said. "There's despair and there's hopelessness. But we've been able to find some repose in going out and advocating."</p>

<p>WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump hosted a pair of Arab Gulf leaders at the White House on Wednesday as violence between Israel and Syria renewed doubts about his pledge to impose peace on the Middle East.</p>

<p>Donald Trump held a meeting in the Oval Office with Bahrain's crown prince and dined privately with Qatar's prime minister.</p>

<p>The Republican president has lavished attention on the Persian Gulf, a wealthy region where members of his family have extensive business relationships. He has already visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the first foreign policy trip of his second term.</p>

<p>With little progress to share on the region's most intractable problems, including the war in Gaza, Trump was more focused Wednesday on promoting diplomatic ties as a vehicle for economic growth.</p>

<p>"Anything they needed, we helped them," Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Bahrain Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. "And anything we needed, they helped us."</p>

<p>Bahrain is a longtime ally that hosts the U.S. Fifth Fleet, which operates in the Middle East.</p>

<p>Like other Arab leaders, Al Khalifa was eager to highlight the lucrative potential of diplomatic ties with the U.S., including $17 billion of investments.</p>

<p>"And this is real," he said. "It's real money. These aren't fake deals."</p>

<p>According to the White House, the agreements include purchasing American airplanes, jet engines and computer servers. More investments could be made in aluminum production and artificial intelligence.</p>

<p>Bahrain's king, the crown prince's father, is expected to visit Washington before the end of the year. An important part of the relationship will be an agreement, signed on Wednesday, to advance cooperation on civilian nuclear energy.</p>

<p>Dinner with Qatari prime minister</p>

<p>Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the prime minister of Qatar and a member of the country's ruling family, was at the White House for a private dinner with Trump on Wednesday evening.</p>

<p>Trump visited Qatar during his trip to the region, marveling at its palaces and stopping at the Al Udeid Air Base, a key U.S. military facility.</p>

<p>The base was targeted by Iran after the U.S. bombed the country's nuclear facilities. One ballistic missile made impact, while others were intercepted.</p>

<p>Trump wants to use a luxurious Boeing 747 donated by Qatar as his Air Force One because he's tired of waiting for Boeing to finish new planes. However, the arrangement has stirred concerns about security and the ethics of accepting a gift from a foreign government.</p>

<p>Aaron David Miller, who served as an adviser on Middle East issues to Democratic and Republican administrations, said "the Gulf represents everything that Trump believes is right about the Middle East."</p>

<p>"It's rich, it's stable, it's populated by authoritarians with whom the president feels very comfortable," he said.</p>

<p>Fighting in Syria</p>

<p>The fighting in Syria began with clashes between Sunni Bedouin tribes and Druze factions in the country's south. Government forces intervened, raising alarms in Israel, where the Druze are a politically influential religious minority.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, Israel launched strikes in the Syrian capital of Damascus. A ceasefire was later announced, but it was unclear if it would hold.</p>

<p>Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was in the Oval Office for Trump's meeting with the crown prince of Bahrain, said the fighting was the result of "an unfortunate situation and a misunderstanding." He said "we think we're on our way to a real de-escalation" that would allow Syria to "get back on track" to rebuilding after years of civil war.</p>

<p>Despite an international outcry over its punishing military operations in Gaza, Israel has successfully weakened its enemies around the region, including Hezbollah and Iran.</p>

<p>"There's a growing concern that Israel unleashed...has been a bigger sense of unpredictability," Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, said.</p>

<p>He also warned that "there's still no game plan to deal with the loose ends of Iran's nuclear program and its other activities in the region," such as support for the Houthis.</p>
