<p>Taylor Swift's dad Scott is on the road to recovery after undergoing a heart procedure, PEOPLE confirms</p>

<p>Scott had had quintuple bypass surgery just over a month ago</p>

<p>The pop superstar, her brother Austin and their mom Andrea have all been by Scott's side throughout the surgery and recovery process</p>

<p>Taylor Swift's dad Scott is recovering after undergoing a heart procedure.</p>

<p>Scott Swift, 73, had quintuple bypass surgery just over a month ago and is well on the road to recovery, PEOPLE has confirmed. The news was first published by TMZ.</p>

<p>The pop superstar, 35, has been by her dad's side, along with her brother Austin, 33, and their mom Andrea, 67, throughout the entire surgery and recovery process.</p>

<p>The procedure occurred after Scott went in for a check-up and his doctor noticed something that led to the operation. The procedure was not the result of a heart attack.</p>

<p>According to the Mayo Clinic, "Coronary artery bypass surgery creates a new path for blood to go around a blocked or partially blocked artery in the heart."</p>

<p>"The surgery [often] involves taking a healthy blood vessel from the chest or leg area. The vessel is connected below the blocked heart artery. The new path improves blood flow to the heart muscle," the site adds.</p>

<p>A representative for Swift did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.</p>

<p>In a 2019 essay for Elle titled '30 Things I Learned Before I Turned 30,' Taylor opened up about her parents' health and shared that "both of my parents have had cancer." "I've had to learn how to handle serious illness in my family ... It's taught me that there are real problems and then there's everything else," she wrote.</p>

<p>The personal essay also saw Taylor share that her mom's cancer had returned, though she did not share any further details on her dad's health.</p>

<p>Scott and Andrea Swift, who have been married for 37 years, have always been their daughter's biggest cheerleaders, nurturing her talent and passion from a young age.</p>

<p>Long before she was a Grammy-winning singer, the "Fortnight" musician's parents were listening to her sing karaoke and driving her to local gigs close to where she was raised near Wyomissing, Penn.</p>

<p>"She was always singing music when she was 3, 5, 6, 7, years old," Scott, told UDaily, the newspaper of his alma mater, the University of Delaware, back in 2009. "It's Taylor doing what she likes to do."</p>

<p>Taylor's parents were seen at multiple Eras Tour shows before the record-shattering run of gigs came to a close in Vancouver, Canada, on Dec. 8, 2024.</p>

<p>Scott made several headlines during his appearances, including when a clip of him handing out chicken tenders to fans at London's Wembley Stadium went viral in August 2024.</p>

<p>"Scott handing out chicken during ["Style"] somehow makes sense," TikTok user Stephanie Niemiec of New York City wrote over the video at the time, referring to Taylor's hit single from 1989 and 1989 (Taylor's Version).</p>

<p>Travel at one of Canada's busiest airports was briefly halted Tuesday after federal police received a report that a small plane had been hijacked, officials said.</p>

<p>Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the western Canadian province of British Columbia said that at 1:10 p.m. local time they received a report that a Cessna 172 "had been hijacked from the Vancouver Island area and was entering into airspace near Vancouver International Airport."</p>

<p>"The suspect was the sole occupant of the aircraft," the statement added.</p>

<p>In a recording of air traffic control posted to liveatc.net, an official can be heard stating: "We have an incident right above our airspace here — a hijacked 172," the Vancouver Sun reported.</p>

<p>The plane landed in Vancouver at 1:45 p.m. and the "suspect was arrested without incident," the RCMP said, declining to provide further details.</p>

<p>Images published by public broadcaster CBC and video shared online show the small white Cessna surrounded by security vehicles on a runway after landing in Vancouver.</p>

<p>The CBC reported the Cessna was operated by a flying club in Victoria, the provincial capital located on Vancouver Island.</p>

<p>Witness Paul Heeney told the CBC that he was driving when he noticed a small plane flying low and banking to the right.</p>

<p>"A few minutes later, we saw a second pass ... the plane was making a big clockwise circle," he said.</p>

<p>Vancouver International Airport said in a statement that nine inbound flights were diverted during the incident with a temporary halt to operations ordered across the airport in the West Coast city. Flights were grounded for 39 minutes.</p>

<p>Airport head of communications Stephen Smart told the CBC that it "could have lasted a lot longer."</p>

<p>Drugmaker Pfizer is warning doctors that it expects to run low on supplies of Bicillin L-A, a long-acting injection of the antibiotic penicillin, the preferred option for treating syphilis during pregnancy.</p>

<p>The news – the latest twist in a drug shortage that began in 2023 – follows a July 10 recall of certain lots of Bicillin L-A that were found to be contaminated with floating particles. Pfizer says it has not received any reports of adverse events related to the recalled shots.</p>

<p>"We have identified the root cause to be associated with stoppers supplied from an external vendor and are implementing the appropriate corrective and preventative actions," the company said in a statement, adding that it places the utmost emphasis on patient safety. "We fully recognize the importance of this medicine for patients and are working as quickly as possible to resolve the matter."</p>

<p>Benzathine penicillin G, sold as Bicillin, is used to treat a number of common bacterial infections, such as strep throat, in adults and children. Because one shot can last up to two weeks, it's especially helpful for people who can't swallow pills or may not be able to remember to take them. In most cases, however, if the shots aren't available, doctors can turn to alternatives like the antibiotic doxycycline.</p>

<p>But benzathine penicillin G is the only product that's approved and recommended to treat the sexually transmitted infection syphilis during pregnancy. If the infection is caught early, a single injection can keep the infection from spreading to a newborn, a condition called congenital syphilis.</p>

<p>Without treatment, syphilis during pregnancy can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. It can also be fatal for infants. Syphilis can also cause vision and hearing problems in babies as well as deformities of the bones and teeth.</p>

<p>As rates of syphilis rose in adults, more babies became infected, too. Over the past decade, rates of congenital syphilis have increased tenfold in the United States, from 335 in 2012 to more than 3,800 in 2023, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.</p>

<p>"We're in the midst of a congenital syphilis crisis, and we've been calling for an emergency declaration for congenital syphilis for years," said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a professor of clinical population and public health sciences at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. "This threatens to make that even worse."</p>

<p>The shot has been a key part of the strategy that some states have been using to quell rising rates of congenital syphilis.</p>

<p>Because too many pregnant patients infected with syphilis weren't making it into basic primary care, there's been a push in states including New Mexico and Minnesota to test all pregnant women for syphilis at multiple stages of pregnancy and whenever they show up in emergency rooms or urgent care clinics.</p>

<p>After an initial positive test, providers are encouraged to treat a pregnant patient with a shot of long-acting penicillin at the same visit, without waiting for the results of a second confirmatory test.</p>

<p>This push for one-stop testing and treatment has already had an effect.</p>

<p>"With the latest release of data, we saw a slowing of rates, which was really exciting," said a CDC official familiar with the data who asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to speak to the media. That progress is the result of hard work bringing awareness to controlling syphilis and congenital syphilis, the official said.</p>

<p>Bicillin L-A most recently went into shortage in 2023. During that time, the US Food and Drug Administration has allowed imports of two equivalent products, a French drug called Extencilline, and Lentocilin, which is imported from Portugal and sold by entrepreneur Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Drugs. These imports continue to be authorized.</p>

<p>Those forms of the medication are trickier to use, said Erin Fox, associate chief pharmacy officer at the University of Utah Health.</p>

<p>"In a health system, it's very hard to use imported products," she said. The bar coding on the drugs isn't recognized by most hospital systems, and there may be differences in how the products are mixed and diluted, which can be confusing.</p>

<p>Her hospital has been handling the shortage by being judicious about who gets Bicillin shots. It hasn't had to use an imported products yet.</p>

<p>Pfizer has also been working to boost its supply. The company stopped shipping pediatric doses in 2023 and instead focused on making adult doses to prioritize supply for pregnant patients. According to the FDA's drug shortage website, Pfizer expected to have a delivery of pediatric doses available in October.</p>

<p>Now, the company has advised customers that it will give an update on the Bicillin supply no later than mid-August. Until stock has fully recovered, Pfizer said, it will ration available supplies of the shots. Providers will have to fill out medical request forms, and the company will send supplies on a per-patient basis.</p>

<p>Sterile injectable products like Bicillin are especially vulnerable to shortages because they have a more complex manufacturing process than pills and tend to be prone to quality control issues. In this case, Pfizer is the sole supplier of Bicillin for the US.</p>

<p>The nonprofit National Coalition of STD Directors said it's gathering information from members to understand how far-reaching the impact of the recall may be.</p>

<p>One of its committees met Monday, and all of the participants were in the process of returning Bicillin doses to Pfizer. One state returned about 800 vials, "so we expect to hear this is widespread," said Elizabeth Finley, senior director of communications and programs for the organization.</p>

<p>"We had a small reprieve for about, maybe a year, in terms of steady supply. And now this is just a complete kick in the teeth and really threatens our ability to prevent and control syphilis," Klausner said.</p>

<p>The CDC had previously posted recommendations for caring for syphilis patients during the shortage, but that information has since been taken down. Fox, who investigates drug shortages for the Association of Health Systems Pharmacists, said she has asked the agency to repost it but hasn't received a response.</p>

<p>CDC staffers who work on syphilis control were hit hard by recent government layoffs, although about 200 were reinstated in June. Federal funding cuts have also hampered state and local efforts to control sexually transmitted infections.</p>

<p>The FDA its drug shortage page with links to Pfizer's recent guidance but has not posted Pfizer's recall announcement.</p>

<p>A spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human services referred questions about the recall and potential supply problems to Pfizer.</p>

<p>"I am concerned though that now, with a cut in funds to national and local STD programs, that we will start to see a drop in testing for syphilis," the CDC official said. "Cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, as well as other programs, will be devastating for syphilis control."</p>

<p>Spanish rescue teams are searching for an American hiker who has been missing in the Pyrenees for eight days.</p>

<p>Specialist mountain rescue teams and helicopters from the Air Service are searching for Cole Henderson, 27, in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido national park in northern Spain, the Guardia Civil told CNN on Wednesday.</p>

<p>Henderson was last heard from on July 9, said Henderson's friend Max Senoff in a Facebook post published Tuesday.</p>

<p>He sent a text saying that he had parked his car, turned his phone on airplane mode and was beginning his hike. He has not been heard from since.</p>

<p>Henderson was reported missing on July 14, after he missed his flight home to the Netherlands on July 12, said the Guardia Civil.</p>

<p>Authorities found Henderson's car in Torla, a town to the west of the national park, said the Guardia Civil.</p>

<p>Senoff believes he may have been attempting to climb Monte Perdido, the third-highest peak in the Pyrenees, standing at 11,007 feet (3,355 meters).</p>

<p>Social media footage shows the normal route from Torla, where Henderson's car was parked, still covered in snow in early July.</p>

<p>The route is rated as "Peu Difficile" (PD), meaning "somewhat difficult" by the climbing community. While PD routes are often climbed without ropes, they might involve steep sections of climbing, or crevassed glaciers, and often require specialized equipment, such as ice axes or crampons.</p>

<p>According to his social media profiles, Henderson attended St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware, before studying Computer Science at Rhodes College, Tennessee.</p>

<p>There's growing concern for another significant rain and flooding event this week, this time along the Gulf Coast, from what could become the Atlantic basin's next tropical system.</p>

<p>The potential storm's flood threat is just the latest in what has been a summer full of deadly and devastating floods.</p>

<p>The would-be storm was a broad area of showers and thunderstorms over the Florida Panhandle Wednesday morning. It will drift west into the Gulf by Thursday, where it has a medium chance of becoming a tropical depression, according to the National Hurricane Center.</p>

<p>If it can muster a more defined center of circulation and strengthen further it would become Tropical Storm Dexter, the fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season — a mark typically reached around mid-August.</p>

<p>If it does form, it would do so just off the Gulf Coast — a reminder that storms are more likely to form in the warm, shallow water closer to land in July. Warm water acts like fuel for storms to form and strengthen and ocean surface temperatures are well above average where the system is expected to track.</p>

<p>Conditions aren't looking favorable for a strong storm right now because this system will likely not have much time to mature over water and will also have to overcome hostile upper-level winds that can rip apart storms.</p>

<p>But a few reputable forecast models are predicting a more organized system, potentially a tropical storm, in the Gulf by late week. The outcome could hinge on the system's track. If it dips further south and spends more time over the Gulf, it could become stronger if it can withstand the upper-level winds on its journey.</p>

<p>Even if it isn't named, this system will bring tropical downpours to Florida and parts of the Gulf Coast over the next several days. This surge of moist tropical air helped drench Daytona Beach with 2.25 inches of rain on Tuesday, breaking its previous daily record of 2 inches set on July 15, 1935.</p>

<p>There's a Level 1 of 4 risk of flooding rain along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Louisiana Wednesday as the system taps into rich tropical moisture and enhances rainfall rates and the flood potential. Heavy storms are likely in the afternoon and evening but some of the most intense could occur just off the coast. Rainfall totals could range between 1 to 3 inches.</p>

<p>But the most serious flood threat will come Thursday and into the weekend as the system drifts west into parts of the north-central Gulf Coast, including Alabama, Mississippi and southeast Louisiana. Heavy rain could be long-lasting once it begins, possibly as soon as Wednesday night.</p>

<p>Flash flooding is the main concern, especially if rain bands repeatedly track over the same areas which could happen if the system moves slowly and lingers.</p>

<p>A Level 2 of 4 threat for flooding rain is in place Thursday for southeastern Louisiana, including New Orleans and parts of coastal Alabama and Mississippi. By Friday, the threat increases to a Level 3 of 4 for parts of Louisiana including Baton Rouge over fears that heavy rain could linger. Several inches of rain are possible in the worst-case scenarios.</p>

<p>It's clear that heavy rain and flooding will threaten much of the north-central Gulf Coast, but exactly where and how much remain in question. It will all depend on how strong the system becomes, where it tracks and how fast it moves – questions that will become sorted in the next couple of days.</p>

<p>Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to gather at more than 1,600 locations nationwide July 17 to rally against many of the Trump administration's policies.</p>

<p>The name for the Good Trouble Lives On protests comes from a phrase commonly used by the late-Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, who insisted it was important to engage in "good trouble, necessary trouble" in order to achieve positive social change.</p>

<p>Lewis, who was often called the "moral compass'' of the House, was one of the most vocal critics of President Donald Trump's first administration. The protests are scheduled for the fifth anniversary of Lewis' death.</p>

<p>Organizers called on the public to protest the Trump administration's stance on women's rights, cuts to safety net programs, treatment of immigrants and use of the National Guard to quell largely peaceful protests in California.</p>

<p>Celina Stewart, chief executive officer of League of Women Voters, one of the organizing groups, said Trump rules by fear, silencing opposition and dissent. Americans should instead band together and embody Lewis' ideals of social justice and activism, she said.</p>

<p>"What would he encourage us to do in this moment?" Stewart asked. "That is going to look different for all of us, but I know that all of us can do something, and many of us can do many things."</p>

<p>The White House said Trump is delivering on what he said he would do.</p>

<p>"Nearly 80 million Americans gave President Trump a historic mandate to Make America Great Again and he is delivering on that promise in record time," said White House spokesperson Liz Huston.</p>

<p>'Be of service to your community'</p>

<p>Many of the advocacy groups planning the upcoming protest were also involved in the nationwide "No Kings" demonstrations on June 14, which drew millions of participants across 2,100 locations, according to the group's estimates. Overall, there have been monthly nationwide protests against the administration's policies since April.</p>

<p>The flagship event this time will be in Chicago, with additional large peaceful protests planned for Atlanta, St. Louis, MO, Annapolis, MD and Washington D.C. Hundreds of smaller events are expected in cities and towns across the country. Some international protests are scheduled.</p>

<p>Along with protests and marches, some groups will hold "moral assemblies" at statehouses and federal buildings, food drives, teach-ins, voter registration drives and other community-building events, said Allison Pulliam, co-director of one of the organizing groups, Declaration for American Democracy Coalition.</p>

<p>"People are showing up in their communities in the ways that they feel led to show up, and that's just exactly what Congressman Lewis meant when he talked about good trouble: finding ways to be of service to your community," she said.</p>

<p>Why on a Thursday?</p>

<p>Rather than holding the nationwide protests on a Saturday, as advocacy groups have largely done this year, organizers decided to hold the events on the fifth anniversary of Lewis' death, even though it falls on a Thursday.</p>

<p>Daryl Jones, the co-leader of the Transformative Justice Coalition, said organizers got Lewis' family's permission to use his name with the protests. They asked that it not be a somber occasion, but one that would take up his cause.</p>

<p>Many of the protests are scheduled to take place after the workday ends to increase participation. Some are also scheduled for early in the morning.</p>

<p>Organizers said they aren't worried that a Thursday protest will mean lower turnout.</p>

<p>"This is the largest one day voting rights (and) civil rights movement action in all 50 states and internationally in U.S. history, and the largest weekday action this year," promised Barbara Arnwine, another co-leader of the Transformative Justice Coalition. "People are happy to gather in a celebratory protest."</p>

<p>Big and small events</p>

<p>This day of action follows the model advocacy groups have used since the spring, holding events in as many locations as possible, rather than in one or two major cities.</p>

<p>The approach can be harder for the public to ignore and allows people to connect with local resources and perform local advocacy, organizers have said, rather than attend a single large event and not know what to do next.</p>

<p>Palm Beach County, Florida, where Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate is located, will be the site of five events, for example, including a march, a car parade and speakers talking about Lewis' legacy.</p>

<p>In Yonkers, New York, the local NAACP and Indivisible chapters teamed up to host an event in Van Der Donck Park, which is near the train station and library. They expect at least 200 people to attend.</p>

<p>"The idea is to make a little noise," said Eileen O'Connor who co-founded the NYCD 16/15 Indivisible group.</p>

<p>Holding the event during the week and after work is an effort to make the event easier for families to attend, said Kisha Skipper, president of NAACP-Yonkers Branch #2188, as well as an effort to engage younger people. Lewis became an advocate while in college, organizing lunch counter sit-ins in Nashville.</p>

<p>Along with bubbles, sidewalk chalk and sign-making stations, the event will also include voter education and registration information, Skipper said.</p>

<p>In Annapolis, Maryland, seven local organizations worked together to put together a march over two local bridges.</p>
